Having worked with many Iranian ‘exiles’ in Canada (in the oil and gas sector) I found them to be amongst the most educated and worldly individuals. Far more sophisticated than the average Westerner. On a side note the Iranian women engineers I worked with are some of the most attractive females I have ever seen. If Iran could shake off the Mullahs, with the educational and sheer ability of its people, within 20 years it could become one of the most successful countries. As in South Africa there is a ruling minority that reject modernization and the free market which will condemn poverty on their countries while the rest of the world moves on.
@ I am well aware of that. What I was trying to imply is that there is an ANC/COSATU/SACP ruling elite benefiting from the status quo in South Africa. Their ruling philosophy brings no significant benefit to the people who vote for them. Especially COSATU and the communists who are living in the past. Even the Chinese are no longer pure Marxists anymore. So, Iran would be better if it becomes more like Canada and America. The US and Canada are among the most corrupt and corrupting societies in the world. Iran has existed for thousands of years, but you know what is best for them. Why don't you tell the Americans that they abandon their white supremacist ideology and leave the rest of the world alone. Tell them to stop carrying out their killing sprees in the Middle East East.
What a fantastic history lesson on Iran, unfortunately SA is prone to align themselves with countries who have the cash to help them whenever they need it.

Just a small correction. In the sixties and seventies Sasol was a state owned Corporation. The National Iranian Oil Company invested the 17% in Natref together with Sasol and Total. Not in Sasol.

Fascinating history lesson from Dr Iraj and the interview conducted very professionally by Alec. The Dr should put all his knowledge into maybe a 3-part book series, which will be an international best seller! It's absolutely disgusting about the hypocrisy of the South African government against Israel, no condemnation of Russia and Iran because one can most likely assume where their bread is buttered! MTN is also an utter disgrace and should be boycotted for supporting such regimes as Iran & Syria!!
Very interesting talk by this Iranian academic who says that current Iranian leadership is even more radical than Apartheid era leadership during Apartheid in SA.

South Africa has never been allied with Iran, SA presidents has never or rarely visited Iran and in terms of agreements, there's nothing. In terms of trade, 2023, South Africa exported $16.52 million to Iran. In 2022, Iran exported $4.2 million to South Africa. $20 million of trade... meanwhile if we look at Iran's international trade partners. In 2022, Australia exported $69.2M to Iran. Thanks. This is fascinating data. I'm not too sure what to conclude from it though. Do you think it undermines what Iraj was implying about the collaboration between the ANC and the Iranian regime? Thank you for this interview. I enjoyed it. However, one major issue that I as someone who has experienced most of what Iraj has been explaining here- see is the narrow view point of seeing everything from the eye of a "Persian" coupled with "Bhai faith". Don't get me wrong, I respect all religions and faiths since no matter what the founder fathers' intention was NOW, it is a matter of geography. As he was explaining the politics of this "geographic place" called Iran today (since 1935) it was built by the Russian and British colonists- before that it was Turkish rulers for thousands of years not Persians who migrated from India to this geographic location; then, by these colonist help took over Iran. The Turkish people in Iran (more than half the population of that country) have been assimilated and under heaviest scrutiny than Bahais for a simple reason that Turks are more powerful in Iran as compared to say Bahais. Of course this is the same with some other so-called minorities such as Baluchis, Al Ahwazi Arabs, Gileks, etc. What the colonists power did through Shah is to bring everything to Tehran under one nation, one ethnicity, one religion/sect, ONE LANGUAGE called farsi in diminishing the culture, languages, actually the existence of all others in Iran so that the process of stealing Iran's humongous wealth be much easier and faster under a central system that owned everything. I will mention one of the most obvious and simple example that is "Tabriz rug" that is the best in the world have been advertised and sold under "Persian rug"! The people who make these rugs (a very hard and tedious job) are all Turkish Azerbaijanis but, the sellers around the Glob are Farsi ("Par jhain" as they themselves pronounce) Isfahani, Kermani, Yazdi dealers under the false reality. The same goes with economy, politics, and social issues in Iran- to put it simply: "IT IS A FARCE!" As a Turkish Azerbaijani who have been educated, worked and lived in the USA for almost half a century, I have not seen a more racist people than these so called Persian "Hindu Dari" people who have called half the population of their country "dunkey Turks" for a century after Russia and UK put the Fahlavis (Palani) as shahs of Iran in power to weaken the Turkic people to the West. Now, with many of them persians it is the example of "chicken has come home to rooster"!
Once agaiin, zero debate. If the South African Government justifiably takes a firm foreign relations position on an issue occurring in one Country, it does not mean that the same policies should be raised for every other Country with similar suspected historical violations. The Palestine persecution an illegitimate occupation by Jews whom, under the Balfour declaration were to be assured a "Homeland" a Statehood, has been a perpetual tyranical, inhumane, genocidal campaign of some decades. South Africa is ruled by Communists both DA and ANC, who have now forged for themselves a convenient coallition Government. The path to Fascism is paved in Democracy. Marxism can only be practiced if the people can be taxed.
Most theocracies are run like that. We have only recently adapted our laws in South Africa to cater for rights of women under Muslim law. That's not only Iran
All South African womens rights have always been the same under South African law. It's not the laws problem if their religious leaders see it otherwise.
Islam is a cult. It is causing destruction around the world. And clearly your understanding of this extremely intelligent discussion, is way above your head.
You should be able to tell the difference. Firstly Jewish women (in fact all women) have the same rights as men in Israel, they can be pilots, doctors or anything they choose. They can study at universities and be elected to the government. They don’t have to have a male chaperone to go outside. Iran has laws that allow men to control women and stop their advancement. That’s a big difference and it’s totally unfair. Maybe you don’t remember when women chained themselves to various places while fighting for women’s rights in the UK and Europe. The sad part is that Iranian women are physically harmed if they try to resist being 2nd class citizens.
One of the most informative interviews I have experienced. I appreciate Alec letting him speak without interruption.
