Loved the video. I’m especially interested in the fact that you started from non conventional Animes or ones that aren’t as mainstream like Naruto it DBZ. I myself really got into one because of a spoof UA-cam challenge of the show, and one mainly because of a meme. It’s a solid genre of content and a phenomenal video my friend!
DBZ Bleach and Inuyasha were my first introductions to anime, so i got both the martial arts action genre and the feudal japan drama genre as my first impressions. probably what leads alot of my tastes in anime even now
There are so many good animes, both old and new, that get overlooked because of the genre; Trigun, Made in Abyss, Hellsing, Claymore, Girl's Last Tour, Berserk, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The list goes on and on.
ive always watched anime from when i was a kid. everyone would bully you if they found out you watched anime, so i kept it a secret. But now that its mainstream, people are finally giving it the respect that it deserves and im glad people can see the appeal now. But ill NEVER forget yall that used to hate on anime fans only to become one 😡
It's fascinating how, in 2021, you started watching some of the same shows that made up the "standard" initial recommendation lists a decade earlier; lists intended to be a broad and easy collection for people newly interested in this anime thing, so that they could find what kind of shows they might enjoy further. Also, RIP Nujabes. Nujabes was killed when a bus ran a red light and collided with his taxi in 2010. The Godfather of Lo-Fi, gone too soon. Edit: Also, for anyone that has decided they do like at least some things in the anime medium, I recommend Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror). It was something of a flash in the pan; popular with reviewers at the time, but I've barely heard anyone talk about it since (it won IMDB's anime of the year) - it remains, closing on a decade later, one of my favourite crime thrillers.
been watching anime for over a year now and only just making into some of the less mainstream shows like the ones in this vid and honestly, they might just be better than everything else the genre has to offer. Mainly because they feel mature i guess, have really unique vibes to them, and cover some pretty interesting snd relatable stories. These are the shows that make watching anime worth it.
If you like the more mature stories, may I recommend Terror in Resonance (transliteration of the JP title; Zankyou no Terror)? It was popular with reviewers when it came out in 2014, and remains one of my favourite crime thrillers to this day.
The fact that Bebop was your first experience was probably a godsend for you. I know a lot of people who never truly got into anime because they didn't have a title that solid to start with. My first anime were things like Dragon Ball, Samurai Pizza Cats, and Ronin Warriors, back when I was a little kid. DBZ made me fall in love with... DBZ. But Ninja Scroll and Cowboy Bebop made me fall in love with anime.
ergo proxy is a great slow burn cyberpunk i've watched recently. it doesn't instantly grab your attention, but by the end of the third episode you start to realize it's building towards something deep. the dub is also super good. check it out. for something more chaotic and fun i wanna shoutout dorohedoro, it just oozes creativity. the premise at first doesn't seem like all that, but just give it a shot, the world building is insane. all the characters are hyper violent yet extremely lovable. definitely weird but i think it's cool weird. really enjoyed your vid, hope to see more!
Dorohedoro sounds interesting , and I do love ergo proxy it fell under the radar because like you said some people don’t have patience for a slow burn . But, it was 100% worth it great show !
Ergo Proxy is the first show that I've ever experienced the feeling of "WOW, the blue really stands out, or have gotten excited over the color red. The color palette of the show was so bland, that any color stood out vibrantly. It really helped in making you focus on the story that was being told. I especially loved the finish. Kind of like, wow that was an adventure and a half, but it really is just the beginning.
Black Lagoon getting the recognition that it deserves! By now I've watched more than 600 anime, Black Lagoon was under the first 10 shows and to this day it is still in my top 5 of all time. There is just smth about it, the way it's so gritty and honest? Great list, only Trigun is missing here (highly recommend)
Very well put together video. Black Lagoon is definitely my favorite anime. It needs way more recognition. Shame we never got a proper ending but what we got was amazing.
Black Lagoon is an amazing show and truly and under-appreciated classic , I hope one day we get a couple more episodes but , I do agree what we got was a phenomenal show !
Excellent video CySnail ! Thank you for sharing your story / thoughts 😊 I think there are two standouts that you should definitely include in the Part 2 to this video…. GANGSTA, and Jörmungand. Those were direct follow-ons for me once I had watched the others. Must watch shows for those of the anime cognoscenti, imho 😆
Wow, this is an excellent video! It can be difficult the essences of the medium's most timeless works of art, but you've done it. You've got a real gem of a channel here, very strong showing, and instant subscribe!
Check out a few shows, Serial Experiments Lain was amazing, though short. Also, the original Boogiepop Phantom. Theres a reason it was remade several times, but they were never able to capture its essence again like the first. Both excellent shows.
I live in Hawaii and growing up KHON was the Japanese programing station We just considered it "Cartoons" even when shows like Star Blazers and Robotech ran uncensored (body parts of civilians flying with explosions from crossfire)
Hearing you talk about Samurai Champloo makes me think you'd love the classic movie 7 Samurai. It does a wonderful job of making you feel like part of the gang as you slowly get to know them individually.
2:02 my mom used to bug me about my obsession with rewatching movies to see new things I missed the last time I watched them. To this day I'm sure ive seen the matrix trilogy at least thirty times over XD
The best way to convince someone to give a show a try is by ONLY describing the hype and the synopsis and NEVER saying it's an anime/video game. Keep hyping up each episode as it comes out or cover one theme of the show one meeting, and at the next meeting cover a different theme of the show. Eventually you will fill them with such curiosity that they will begin to question their stance.
Nice video. I grew up watching anime since 1978. My first one is Battle of the Planets(Science Ninja Team Gatchaman). I didn't even knew what anime was since I was a kid. Later I watched star Blazers(Space Battleship Yamato), since both of them were influenced by Star Wars. I was later hooked into watching it with Speed Racer(Mach Go Go Go) in '81, Danguard Ace and Gaiking from Force Five Shogun Warriors and Voltron(Go Robot Lion) '84, Robotech(Macross) in '85 and Capt. Harlock in '86. Then those shows went off the air and never seen again. Then in 1991 home video came to the rescue and I got back into watching it again and managed to buy/rent them again. I also attended comic conventions and watched various series/movies and really enjoyed them. I later went to anime conventions in '96. I also recorded anime on independent channels and later Cartoon Network and Encore Action in '99. After 2001, I decided to drop VHS and do DVD and I was so amazed at how much technology has changed. One thing I love about anime compared to American cartoons: Plots, series, characters, genre, and music. I will continue to watch anime no matter what.
Okay, part 2 comment now that I've finished the video: Each of these anime is legendary. In all honesty, if it weren't for these anime, I probably wouldn't be the fan of the medium that I am today. From an unorthodox space western with themes of identity conflict and repercussion for the past, to a gritty, violent "A-Team" rehash with some of the most badass female characters ever, to a spec-ops military show which blurs the lines of what it means to be "human", to a Feudal era samurai show borne in a modern light, music and all (I also digitally own all 3 soundtrack albums for Champloo because... of course), These shows set the foundation for the entertainment I choose to consume, now in my mid 30s. Through my journey experiencing these titles, I've gone through a spectrum of different anime. Trigun. Big O. Naruto. Fairy Tail. Outlaw Star. Akira. Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Soul Eater. Akame ga Kill. Kill la Kill. Baki. RWBY. Sword Art Online. Princess Mononoke. The list continues on and on. I stopped watching television in my mid 20s. I only watch anime and auto racing, with an occasional movie or stand-up comedy. When it comes to something I can just sit and watch, over and over again, they're the only things that keep me invested. And you do become invested. With these characters, the worlds, their struggles, their development, the unique way each anime builds a space never seen before. And the artwork never, EVER disappoints. Even in titles where the story and characters are just mid, or fall flat, you find yourself at some point looking at what's on screen and saying, "Wow, that's beautiful." To me, there's no form of entertainment that can come close to anime. I play video games, which do well to create unique-feeling worlds, but that's more my "distraction" than my "escape". Television shows and movies, unless they're a fantasy title, all feel like they're coming from the same world. But in anime, every title FEELS different, like it's a world made specifically for these characters that exists outside our own world. And that's part of what draws us fans in and connects us with these characters and their stories. Sorry for the lengthy comment, but also thank you for making this video. You've reminded me why I fell so deeply in love with Japanese animation.
Great video as someone who got into anime just in 2020 I couldn’t agree more, there are so many masterpieces out there in anime especially the older not so mainstream ones. I just recently watch this anime movie from the 80s called Wicked City and all I’m say is I think you will enjoy that one as well I’d recommend it Edit: also that little anime edit in the beginning went insanely hard lol 🔥
I stumbled across this video at almost 1 AM, and I watched the whole thing. Anime is such a varied medium that I'm glad you found some shows that appeal to your taste. Cowboy Bebop is one hell of a special show. It didn't appeal to me at first when I saw it as a teenager, but now being in my late 20s, I appreciate it a hell of a lot more. When shit hits the fan, the crew is such a realistic depiction of humans during our darkest hours but also wanting to help and support each other. These characters have amazing chemistry on screen. Samurai Chamlpoo also succeeds as a Bebop spiritual successor. But instead of jazz and a space western, it's hip hop and samurai. Another absolute diamond. I know it gets so much praise that people start to think it's overhyped, but I also love Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Sometimes you have to accept pain and sacrifice, and there is no easy road. It's a beautiful journey to discover some hard truths.
Thank You for making this video about this topic. I grew up in the early 2000's watching anime was better than other stuff airing on tv. It's crazy how anime has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. I'm glad that more and more people can enjoy this form of entertainment. You hit the nail on the head! Skol!
I'm really happy you discovered the beauty of anime, there are TONS of great anime series and movies spanning decades. Since you really enjoyed Ghost in the Shell (I really love it too) I wanna recommend AKIRA to you, it's an even older take on cyberpunk by anime, great movie and even greater manga. I grew up with anime since I was around 8 y/o, now 25 (damn that's a lot of time now that I think about it) so I could say I saw a sizable chunk of what the medium has to offer, so if you wish, I open to give recommendations, just ask.
I always love when I come across videos like this. It's so hard to get people who don't watch anime to give it a try. I know I've cried more and felt more (consistently) watching anime than I have with live action over the years. You covered some really great shows and I really agreed with your thoughts on them. I also like how you let the shows do the talking at times throughout. Two I will pitch your way, as we seem to have similar taste, are Last Exile and Psycho-Pass. LE is a steampunk airship series about two young couriers who get caught up in a war between two nations when they're tasked to deliver a young girl to a battleship. PP is basically Minority Report and is very mature with heavy emphasis on telling a story that falls hard in the grey area of morality. Hope you continue to come across good stories in every medium!
I appreciate that ! And I will definitely put those on the watch list . I’m always looking for new stories to give a shot and explore new themes and characters .
I loved almost everything about Cowboy Bebop but for some reason it didn't really click with me. Samurai Champloo on the other hand... Oh boy, I was invested as soon as Mugen and Jin fought on the bar. The art, music, setting, everything was so beautiful and enthralling that I canceled anything I had planned and just binged the show the entire day. And that ending, man, I had the biggest smile on my face. Just perfect. Having just finished watching Cowboy Bebop some time before and knowing that Watanabe was the director for this one too had me thinking the worst, but I believe it just made the ending that more sweeter. My number 1 anime.
This was a refreshing perspective. One show you might be interested in is Gungrave. It's basically a dark sci-fi mafia drama with a coming of age story thrown in the middle. The game it's based on isn't great but this anime's story is fantastic!👌🏾
I've been watching anime for over 20 years (I'm about to be 30) and to be frank, I generally get really pissed off when the people who would have made fun of me in high school for liking anime suddenly start liking anime. That being said, I respect the hell out of you for admitting you were wrong about anime and making a video like this. I hope it reaches more people who ridicule anime so they can maybe see the medium from a new perspective. Yes, anime can be degenerate trash (not that that's a bad thing, degeneracy can be fun), but it can also be incredibly deep, profound, and emotional, and animation allows for so many things that simply aren't possible in live action. It can be over the top and entirely unrealistic at times, but that just makes for better escapism imo. some recs, based on what you seem to be into: Ergo Proxy Steins;Gate Jormungand Blood+ Claymore Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Gunnm Made in Abyss Perfect Blue Psycho-Pass Serial Experiments Lain Youjo Senki
People are too quick to judge , Edgerunners , ergo proxy are great the others are gonna have to be put on my watchlist. I love a lot of the themes in ergo proxy great show !
I’m glad you gave anime a chance man. Some great recommendations in the video and in the comments below. These are some must-watch anime’s imo: Ergo Proxy Serial Experiments Lain Naoki Urasawa’s Monster Cyberpunk Edgerunners Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne Psycho-Pass Attack on Titan Akira Vinland Saga Trigun Steins Gate Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin Parasyte The Maxim Paprika Perfect Blue Neon Genesis Evangelion Devilman Crybaby Death Parade Fate/Zero Darker Than Black Spirited Away Princess Mononoke Good luck man~
As a film person, I'd like to recommend you some beautiful cinema from the world of anime. Satoshi Kon is someone that comes right away to mind, he was one of the finest filmmakers with an exceptional eye for editing and transitions. Perfect Blue (1997), Tokyo Godfathers (2003) are some of his works! Studio Ghibli's lesser known director, Isao Takahata, was an absolute legend. His cinema is quiet and life-capturing. Only Yesterday (1991), Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013) are my favorites! (Great, great video btw)
Based off of what u mentioned here i think you would really enjoy gungrave (skip episode 1 it is a spoiler AMV) it follows a sci fi mafia story with great characters. also the cowboy bebop cast is in it btw:)
You bringing up IMDB reminded me that like half of IMDB's top 10 and top 20 television episodes are anime and at one point Attack on Titan had the highest rated episode until it got review bombed. I really wonder what people who think anime is weird or kid stuff think when they see that 😂
I've finished Black Lagoon this week and I LOVE IT, seeing it alongside cowboy bebop wich is my second favorite anime warms my heart. I also recommend you watching Fate/Zero wich is kinda the same as them.
I hopped on the anime train a long time ago, back when Naruto was still airing. At the time only the "weird kids" knew anything about anime unless it was yu-gi-o or pokemon. It wasn't until I got to college a decade later that everyone around me started to talk about all these cool shows that I had been watching for years. Anime is totally slept on, like all media there's good stories and bad ones, but it anime in particular gets a bad rap because of all the weird tropes that US audiences just don't understand.
Sit someone down and tell them a story and they will say it’s interesting , tell them it’s from an anime they lose interest . As long as you have an open mind going in you will have a great time for sure !
Our journeys were practically identical. Saw my first episode of cowboy bebop as a kid; in a hotel room in Paris late at night whilst channel surfing. Couldn't translate the dialogue from French, but knew what I was watching was incredible and vowed to seek it out. Picked up ghost in the shell, black lagoon and samurai champloo at university. Got into to many other series, but the only one that came close to those four was deathnote. Top tier of the 90's and noughties. Anime spectacle has improved in terms of visuals but seldom in character. Ghibli deserves high praise also of course, so distinctive that they deserve their own tier. Great to hear of a journey that mirrored my own so closely. Perhaps not in family circumstances but in progression of wider understanding of the genre. A pity so much anime is questionable, over sexualised content of little real merit.
Honestly COVID opened my eyes to a wider array of series and mediums that either aren’t readily available where I live, or I simply never delved into. Started getting into anime, and although I’m still not massive into it, I’ve always loved the art style (one which I wish to replicate soon). Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was definitely a highlight of that, art style and all, for me. In general, I like series that are more mature, bleaker and darker than the usual stuff I see in the majority of Western media. This is largely because my own stories, art and animations (and eventual web series and movies) also follow this principle of a darker, grittier and more mature theme. I appreciate them far more. So something new like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or old like Black Lagoon both fit the bill for me and then some.
Man I grew up in the nineties, a cybercafe just poped up in my street before they where a thing, and they had a huge ctr playing all the classics all the time, ghost in the shell, ninja scroll, akira and right next to it someone trying to beat Sephiroth in FFVII, as a kid my mind was blown away everytime, also remember that you had to hunt for hidden gems, I had vhs tapes for tv shows and got a expensive tv card for my first wind95 pc, it was a waste cause the file size was way too costly for complete shows, and the only music you could find in the day was in MIDI xD
Fantastic video. You did a great job of merging personal journey with media criticism. It's not often I'll sit down on the spur of the moment to watch a 40+ minute video from a creator I've never heard of, but you got me there. Keep it up.
Great video! I suggest you wait for the upcoming show called Pluto written by one of the manga GOATs Naoki Urusawa. You can get into Monster too which is known to be his magnum opus
Cowboy Bebop is just a mastpiece! I probably will watch it over and over again. The movie wasn`t really that good for my taste but the show oh boy! It has everything a good anime needs and more.
Awesome! Is Part 2 of the Anime you love coming? I’ve seen some and agree with your recommendations but as a still relative anime novice am always looking for good anime that isn’t hentai weird stuff.
Hey dude, first off- great video. Always love hearing how people got into anime, especially as adults bc it's less common. You've clearly gotten a ton of recommendations but I'll add another, although given your taste you've probably already seen it. I recently got around to watching Trigun for the first time, and I totally get why it's a classic now, and it seems like it'd be up your alley. Thematically similar to bebop, and just in vibe as well. Can't recommend it enough.
Just in case, if you haven't seen "Married with children", i'd say that's next up for your sitcom watching. And for anime, make sure you've looked at Youjo senki(action/drama), Noir(action), Blood+(action/drama), Maou-jou de oyasumi(comedy/parody), Aho-girl(comedy), Lovely complex(comedy), Kill la kill(actionparody), Kokoro connect(drama), Nichijou(comedy), Nana(drama), Azumanga daioh(comedy), School rumble(comedy), Stein's gate(sci-fi drama), One-punch man(action/comedy/parody), Samurai 7(pseudo-scifi-ish anime version of the movie story) and Spy x family(action). Considering how 3 out of 4 you showed are in my top rated list, at least a couple of the above should suit you. And i found Noir and Blood+ to have similar merits as Black lagoon, as all 3 were among the first i watched and got me interested. (Samurai champloo is for some reason, even now, 17 years after i got into anime, still merely on my "to watch list", which sadly is getting longer rather than shorter over time) BIG, superIMPORTANT recommendation though, watch anime with original voices. Having watched over 400 series, i think i've found 2 or 3 of them to have high enough quality dubbing that it doesn't detract from overall quality. It's really not surprising once you look at the voice acting industry, where Japan has more professional VAs than the rest of the world together, several times over, AND also has the only higher education for VAs in the world. There's simply a huge quality gap, which, while shrinking slowly, will probably never go away. Roanapur is fictional yes, but it's also based on some real locations. Someone made a video about that many years ago now. Personally, i consider the GITS SAC to be vastly superior to the original GITS movie. ... Yeah, "just cartoons" the same way that movies are just "moving pictures".
Watching this video as im typing this, but if you enjoy ergo proxy, from that one previous comment, then i recommend Serial Experiemnts Lain. Really trippy show that explores many themes such as identity, reality, the emergence and impact of the internet and is one of the most well known mindfuck type of anime from the 90s, standing alongside revelutionary girl utena and NGE. If youre into stuff that delves deep within technology and the impacts of it, then this is the anime for you. My personal favorite anime alongside the Monogatari series and Paranoia Agent.
Bro congratulations on making a fairly well put together video my only suggestion is to definitely get a good mic seriously audio quality is so important on UA-cam other than that nice vid keep it up
Trust me I know , especially when I went back and listened to it haha, if the channel does well in the future it will be a worthwhile investment that I will get . Thank you for the tip I much appreciate it !
Please read or watch Girls last tour. It's a manga that was adapted to anime but the manga is much better. it's about two girls and a German half track motorcicle going through a giant post apocalyptic city. I never thought that a comic(manga) could have such atmosphere. I started reading it on a rainy day and I just didn't stop until I finished and after that I was just thinking about what I just read for about a month after that. The ending hit me so hard I almost cried, like literally that was the first time some piece of media did something like that to me. I just don't know how to describe it. Maybe it's just me, but it's one of the best things I ever read or seen. Give the manga a a shot then if you like it watch the anime. The anime is good but the ending is a cliffhanger.
Im sure everyone in the comments has already reccommended all the classics, but Id like to mention 91 Days and Baccano! as some pretty good mafia story animes. It might not be your style, but i also reccommend Land of the Lustrious as a show that had amazing cg animation which is rare, and also the original FLCL as a great classic as well.
Eastern Elitism much like it's Western cousin is very nonsensical. It's the reason behind the "It's not a cartoon" phase, it's the reason why some Manga guys won't call what they are reading a comic book even though that is exactly what it is. Anime is abbreviated from Animation, how are these things not cartoons? And there's nothing wrong with liking cartoons, I love cartoons but I don't love snobs. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
I agree no one likes that kind of gatekeeping lol, the whole point of the vid is just to show that great stories can come from all types of media regardless. Appreciate the TED talk !
I think it's to set expectations. Yes, production-wise cartoons and anime are more or less the same, at least in medium. But when someone tells me something is an anime, I can already draw from a pool of tropes, cliches and expectations that can guide me on whether I will like the anime or not. I can't use those same metrics on "western" cartoons and have an accurate prediction. But in that same vein, I know that if I'm watching a western cartoon, I'll get a different experience than anime and that's why I still watch both. I don't care who makes the animation, I've watched some Chinese and French animated shows as well. Only thing I care about is that I enjoy it or derive some amusement from it.
I think it's because people at the time already had a set of impressions on the things they called "cartoon". They would say "I don't watch cartoons. They're for kids". So when certain anime fans tried to get them into anime, they chose to get around that by using another noun. Of course, it doesn't work now because the people who don't watch cartoons are now saying "I don't watch anime because of xyz". Everyone more or less has an idea of what anime is about now. If they don't watch, they won't.
I think there is enough difference in the medium to describe things as either comic, manga, cartoons, or anime. Or even korean manhwa. Not to place one over the other, just referring to it as different.
I looked a bit through the comments and can see that you take recommendations. Look up Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. They are both good for different reasons. Hellsing develops the characters better. While Ultimate is just an amazing spectacle. And continues far beyond where the previous series left off. And is just baddass!
Well since we're on Anime recommendations, might I interest you in these two hidden gems. 1. Kaiba 2. Mononoke* *Not the Ghibli film, but I would also recommend that one.
Yes samurai champloo is just amazing, like one of my irst anime and mae me love it, and i didnt get most of that drama and that how incredibly marue and philosophicalis , but its also tgreat actuion, funny and dumb and endearing. That it not afraid to do dumb whatever misadventures among serious deep dramatic oes, i think it what makes it mature. About liffe, and less depressing tan bbop, its vry sad still plenty, but there i a futuure, its about moving on, and making friends, not the traedy, the tragedy just happens, but isnt the point. Its an obstacle.
i dont know why many new movies just dont scratch the itch like they did before. it feels like they put in less effort with shit ton more budget. maybe because limitations breed creativity, unlimited creative liberty with no vision may be the reason. I want to see a new franchise grow so much.
Nice video I got into anime also through Cowboy Bebop and watched some of the more usual anime. It got boring fast. The tropes become repetitive and tiring and more modern anime is overpolished and pretty boring stuff. I had given up on anime until I saw Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) of all things. Gundam helped me get back into anime and rediscover my love for making scale models. I also think that Gundam War in the Pocket is one of the best war series of all time. Love that little short. War in the pocket also has the most realistic dialogue of anything with kids in it. I know for a fact that me and my friends would have had those exact same conversations as the main character has with his friends if I was in the gundam setting. It captures childhood better than another piece of media I have seen.
Gunpla is a very addictive hobby but, an awesome one . I watched the original Gundam but haven’t watched war in the pocket yet gotta put it on my watch list
Fate/zero, Trigun, helsing ultimate, vampire hunter d bloodlines, the ninja scroll movie, the first berserk series and attack on titan would all fit into this category
Wait, don't tell me you haven't seen Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence You keep talking about there being one GitS film, but its sequel is also absolutely fantastic.
great video!!! this is how I stumbled across full metal alchemist brotherhood, my hands down favorite anime. Cowboy beebop, samurai champloo, ninja scroll and so many other amazing anime are there filling the gap in entertainment for me. I'm in the process of making a video about fma on my other channel. might have to quote you a few times on that one. gonna sub from my entertainment channel so I can keep up with your videos!
Boom, subscribed player. This is my entertainment account. Just getting it back up and running. I'll be checking out your other videos, seems like you might have the same kind of perspective as me with movies, shows and anime.
Also got to see Beboop and Eva in a latin american channel called locomotion, wich was 24/7 anime, like anime mtv
DBZ Bleach and Inuyasha were my first introductions to anime, so i got both the martial arts action genre and the feudal japan drama genre as my first impressions. probably what leads alot of my tastes in anime even now
I got into dragon ball then bleach now I just like underrated everything
I remember it like it was yesterday. when you're in total shock and realize that it was worth to give anime this one chance. best feeling ever
It seriously is amazing finding something awesome to watch , listen too , or even play . Discovering something is an awesome feeling
And it seems it was the same for hololive?
Same here, One Punch Man was my first anime. That was in early 2018 but it feels so recent
0:17 JESUS that actually sent me back in time.
I know what you mean
Black lagoon is definitely one of my favorites. Such a classic and let’s not forgot about revy
Cowboy beatbox, shadow lampoon, samurai shampoo. Sounds like some interesting watches
Couldn’t have said it better myself !
One of the best
I heard that Narrow Toe is even better.
@@delphicdescant won peace is overrated
How about guppen lappan
There are so many good animes, both old and new, that get overlooked because of the genre; Trigun, Made in Abyss, Hellsing, Claymore, Girl's Last Tour, Berserk, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The list goes on and on.
finally someone talks about black lagoon
It needs to be noticed and respected

ive always watched anime from when i was a kid. everyone would bully you if they found out you watched anime, so i kept it a secret. But now that its mainstream, people are finally giving it the respect that it deserves and im glad people can see the appeal now.
I 100% agree
If you like the more mature stories, may I recommend Terror in Resonance (transliteration of the JP title; Zankyou no Terror)? It was popular with reviewers when it came out in 2014, and remains one of my favourite crime thrillers to this day.
Watch the BLAME! OVA.
All hail the holographic fish god!

@@Cyb3rSnail I second Dorohedoro. The manga is far better but there's still nothing else out there like it
Ergo Proxy is the first show that I've ever experienced the feeling of "WOW, the blue really stands out, or have gotten excited over the color red. The color palette of the show was so bland, that any color stood out vibrantly. It really helped in making you focus on the story that was being told. I especially loved the finish. Kind of like, wow that was an adventure and a half, but it really is just the beginning.
Such a weird show but very fun to watch! Some of the outros are pretty damned good, too
Black Lagoon getting the recognition that it deserves! By now I've watched more than 600 anime, Black Lagoon was under the first 10 shows and to this day it is still in my top 5 of all time. There is just smth about it, the way it's so gritty and honest?
Great list, only Trigun is missing here (highly recommend)
Trigun is such a classic loved that show . Deserves its own video
@@Cyb3rSnail Black Lagoon anime is based on manga. New chapters are still being released so there is a chance for anime continuation
@@minek53 I definitely hope so
@@minek53 I pray for a miracle. I need a new season

Thank you very much ! I really appreciate that
Black lagoon is my entry to anime and one of my favourite shows of all time. Love seeing the love for it
song is called Kismet and its an edit by Pilooski. Couldnt sleep until I found it one night, you're welcome 38:05
THANK YOU !
He talked about peak cinema aka Ghost in the Shell. Already like this
TANK is literally the best anime opening that has ever existed
Check out a few shows, Serial Experiments Lain was amazing, though short.
Also, the original Boogiepop Phantom. Theres a reason it was remade several times, but they were never able to capture its essence again like the first.
Both excellent shows.
Shout out to your dad. He's a real hero.
I live in Hawaii and growing up KHON was the Japanese programing station
We just considered it "Cartoons" even when shows like Star Blazers and Robotech ran uncensored (body parts of civilians flying with explosions from crossfire)
Hearing you talk about Samurai Champloo makes me think you'd love the classic movie 7 Samurai. It does a wonderful job of making you feel like part of the gang as you slowly get to know them individually.
I think you would really like the 97's Berserk anime
Classic
That’s a video I want to do a full dive on in the future absolute classic
2:02 my mom used to bug me about my obsession with rewatching movies to see new things I missed the last time I watched them. To this day I'm sure ive seen the matrix trilogy at least thirty times over XD
Great video, this makes me wanna rewatch all of these shows and some others that I haven't watched in years again.
Thank you! You took me back to why I fell in love with this genre!
Anytime ! Glad you enjoyed !
Very good strategy
Okay, part 2 comment now that I've finished the video:
Each of these anime is legendary. In all honesty, if it weren't for these anime, I probably wouldn't be the fan of the medium that I am today.
From an unorthodox space western with themes of identity conflict and repercussion for the past,
to a gritty, violent "A-Team" rehash with some of the most badass female characters ever,
to a spec-ops military show which blurs the lines of what it means to be "human",
to a Feudal era samurai show borne in a modern light, music and all (I also digitally own all 3 soundtrack albums for Champloo because... of course),
These shows set the foundation for the entertainment I choose to consume, now in my mid 30s.
Even in titles where the story and characters are just mid, or fall flat, you find yourself at some point looking at what's on screen and saying, "Wow, that's beautiful."
To me, there's no form of entertainment that can come close to anime.
I just recently watch this anime movie from the 80s called Wicked City and all I’m say is I think you will enjoy that one as well I’d recommend it
Edit: also that little anime edit in the beginning went insanely hard lol 🔥
I really loved your thoughts on anime, and I agree that some things can have more to them than meets the eye!
Absolutely things always deserve a second look
Love all the stuff you mentioned. Lagoon specially, is also my favourite of all time. If you want recommendations: Lain, Monster, Ergo Proxy.
Nice video man
Appreciate it ! Thanks for stopping by !
Anytime@@Cyb3rSnail
Thank You for making this video about this topic. I grew up in the early 2000's watching anime was better than other stuff airing on tv. It's crazy how anime has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. I'm glad that more and more people can enjoy this form of entertainment. You hit the nail on the head! Skol!
I appreciate that ! Thank you very much !
You need to watch Lupin!
Everything except the pink jacket series and the red. Well, watch the red jacket series if you love the rest.
Sounds good thank you ! Will put it on the watchlist
The ending leaves you in such a good mood that you didn’t want it to end
This was a refreshing perspective. One show you might be interested in is Gungrave. It's basically a dark sci-fi mafia drama with a coming of age story thrown in the middle. The game it's based on isn't great but this anime's story is fantastic!👌🏾
I will definitely have to check it out , sounds pretty damn good
Gungrave is amazing

Absolutely, appreciate it !
@@Cyb3rSnail I like your style, I hope to receive notifications from your channel soon!
I will definitely put those on the watch list !
Don't forget Satoshi Kon also made a great show called Paranoia Agent
@@paulmerviel1617 Ah yes! Definitely, a reallly good show
Based off of what u mentioned here i think you would really enjoy gungrave (skip episode 1 it is a spoiler AMV) it follows a sci fi mafia story with great characters. also the cowboy bebop cast is in it btw:)
You bringing up IMDB reminded me that like half of IMDB's top 10 and top 20 television episodes are anime and at one point Attack on Titan had the highest rated episode until it got review bombed. I really wonder what people who think anime is weird or kid stuff think when they see that 😂
Please please PLEASE give venture bros a watch and tell us what you think, i think that show would be right up your ally!
I Will put it on the list !
So something new like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or old like Black Lagoon both fit the bill for me and then some.
solid video, I hope that you keep it up, i know how expensive a microphone can be but i think it can help
Keep it up.
Thank you very much , i really appreciate that. And I appreciate you for watching !
A great commentary my good man. Much love

Love the original trigun it’s a classic !
Oh my god I fucking love this video, thank you so much for this since my family thinks that I’m childish for liking anime
Anytime !
Berserk is a series you need to watch if you enjoyed Game of Thrones during last decade.
I loved berserk 97 so much one of my favorite shows , I wanna do a video on it in the future !
Sigma music was a nice touch
didn’t skip a single second, great video.
I appreciate that! Thank you !
(Samurai champloo is for some reason, even now, 17 years after i got into anime, still merely on my "to watch list", which sadly is getting longer rather than shorter over time)
BIG, superIMPORTANT recommendation though, watch anime with original voices.
Cool essay man, really enjoyed it.
I appreciate you stopping by !
I Will give it a shot !
Damned good show. The OST is so calming and really helps me calm down when I'm at my worst
I was foing to say that was some misinformations, but what matter is the passion in the video.
Haha thanks I do try my best to get accurate info
Im sure everyone in the comments has already reccommended all the classics, but Id like to mention 91 Days and Baccano! as some pretty good mafia story animes.
It might not be your style, but i also reccommend Land of the Lustrious as a show that had amazing cg animation which is rare, and also the original FLCL as a great classic as well.
Absolutely right about everything you said.
Thank you !
its funny when u hear people call these shows "overrated"
no shit when ur a timeless 11/10
I just finished reading the Black Lagoon manga bc I loved the anime so much, and I can't agree enough, it really is just fucking amazing

Very well done. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Ok you got me with your taste in media lol I'm sure we would have been badass friends in irl
I see Black Lagoon and I like. Its just that simple.
Left the best for last I hear
Aruarian Dance
Nujabes is and will always be a vibe
I will forever be pissed that I cannot discover Psycho-Pass for the first time again
thank you for introducint me to this sasha character from cyberpunk
@@DL-idk So the people that say that don't understand that by extension watching anime can make those same people look childish?
I think there is enough difference in the medium to describe things as either comic, manga, cartoons, or anime. Or even korean manhwa. Not to place one over the other, just referring to it as different.
I looked a bit through the comments and can see that you take recommendations. Look up Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. They are both good for different reasons. Hellsing develops the characters better. While Ultimate is just an amazing spectacle. And continues far beyond where the previous series left off. And is just baddass!
Hellsing ultimate is a kick ass show I really liked it
Well since we're on Anime recommendations, might I interest you in these two hidden gems.
1. Kaiba
2. Mononoke*
*Not the Ghibli film, but I would also recommend that one.
I Will put that on the list !
I have a feeling that you'd very much enjoy Baccano
Nice video
I got into anime also through Cowboy Bebop and watched some of the more usual anime.
I think you would also like michiko and hatchin and space dandy as well
I have those on my list to watch haha
yo you hit the jack my man, cowboy bebop bein ya first anime? after the background you gave from the beginning of the vid? brother XD
Berserk (1997) & Vinland Saga have entered the chat 💬
I agree, spongebob is also a cult classic
Wait, don't tell me you haven't seen Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
You keep talking about there being one GitS film, but its sequel is also absolutely fantastic.
The sequel is also very good and goes unnoticed , it was already a long video haha had to start trimming clips
I prefer the pacing of SAC over both of the movies.
great video!!! this is how I stumbled across full metal alchemist brotherhood, my hands down favorite anime.
I appreciate that man ! Will definitely be checking out your other channel
Boom, subscribed player. This is my entertainment account. Just getting it back up and running. I'll be checking out your other videos, seems like you might have the same kind of perspective as me with movies, shows and anime.
