    When you framed up the leaves I thought, "Oh, a waterfall." I would like to think it would have caught my eye, I'm glad it caught yours. Looking forward to seeing what the sunshine brings you!

      It also helps that it was one of the very few patches of fall color. It sure was a late year for color.

    I have been going barefoot most of my life. I am 69 now. I used hiking boots of all shapes and sizes including some pretty hefty ones. In the past 6 months I converted to Vivo Barefoot and love them. I loved the first pair so much I immediately bought a second pair for regular day use. From the second I put them on brand new out of the box, they felt wonderful. I've hiked with them, not a heavy pack, but a modest pack over all sorts of terrain. Best hiking shoes ever. Best hands down, I can't emphasize enough how comfortable they are.
    But this comes with a warning. I have been going barefoot all my life. If you are used to tuff sole shoes with an arch, it will take time to adjust to the new feel. You will use muscles in your foot you never knew you had. And I know some people will never adjust to the barefoot feel and will swear they are the worst shoes ever. Yes, you feel every tiny stone/rock/twig under your foot. You can buy inserts that stiffen that feel, smoothing out, but not eliminating, the feel of what you are stepping on.
    Glad you are finding them useful. Love your ambling walks, Perhaps your feet will feel better at the end of the day not encased in solid hiking boots all day.

    The act of taking a photograph is more enjoyable then the photograph. If the photograph turns out as expected it’s a bonus indeed.

    I was thinking similarly today, when I don't feel like editing my photos but I like just getting out and taking them. Just doing it is fun!

    I really like that first image, there is a gentle beauty to it. PS: I have been switching all my shoes towards barefoot ones over the last year and I would not go back.

    Hi Ben, I like both these photos a lot. The dynamics between the maple leaves changing colours and the blue tone background. Nice. Also, the shapes of the cracks in the rocks with the pine needles, nice. All the best, Annie

    I have learned in my own photography that my own perception of an scene sometimes disappoints (even though the technical aspects of the image are correct) when obtaining the end result whether this be a print or after editing and I have come to realise that this can be the cause of my emotional attachment of that scene at the time. Maybe the emotions of the environment and my own temperament at the time of actuating the shutter enhanced what I remembered in my minds eye, later when examining the image without the smells, tastes, sounds and textures that all made the scene, it looks bland to me and disappoints. I have learned to be more isolated with my thoughts and feelings by examining fully the viewfinder in isolation rather than everything around me… I recently in the last two years gave up all my LF camera kit, partly due to film cost but mainly weight. I admire your tenacity and physical ability to hike with a 10x8 and continue to get excited when I see one of your vids pop up. All the best Ben and Happy New Year.

    we struggled for Autumn colour here (South Wales) too last year. A very narrow window not helped by a couple of storms blowing any leaves that did turn onto the floor! I liked your last shot but agree on its exposure. there is a whole load of detail in there and a re-visit in better light would I'm sure yield a great result 🙂

    Hmmm...I didn't notice any quality drop, always seems you do a great job with the videos. I love the leaves, would have been great to be there and try out a lot of different comps, on digital ;-) I have no interest in film other than watching others explore their craft in the great outdoors. Have you ever tried using a digital camera to help you decide between warming filter or not? Might save a $ sheet of film? Maybe even a phone. Just an idea, you are the expert!

    Please can you identify what make/model (Vivobarefoot?) shoes as I can't seem to find them online and have been looking for a replacement for my Merrell Wrapt. Thanks

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  15 днів тому

      The shoes in the video are an older model now. They are the Vivobarefoot Tracker Decon. The closest current model would probably be the Tracker Leather. I’ve been very happy with them overall. I’ve worn them on a backpacking trip, my Zion trip, and also hiking in the Eastern Sierra.

    What type of photography backpack are you currently using?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  14 днів тому

      I’m using an ultralight backpacking pack from Zpacks. It’s no longer a current model, but there will be current ones that are similar. Mine is the Arc Haul Zip. It’s somewhere around 60L. It hauls all my 8x10 gear comfortably and weighs a fraction of what a photo backpack does.

    @UncleDobby 16 днів тому

    Hey Ben! Pardon my ignorance but I’ve always wondered when you show us the view of your composition under the cloth, the spot of light in the centre of the frame - is that what you actually see or are you somehow illuminating it for our benefit?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  15 днів тому +2

      The video actually shows more of the image on the ground glass than I can see with my eyes, mostly because the video camera does extremely well in low light. To my eyes while under the dark cloth, there is a brighter spot where I can see part of the image, and the rest of the area falls off very quickly to being mostly black. Longer lenses have a larger bright spot, and wider lenses have a smaller bright spot. This means that if I’m using a wide lens, I often cannot see the entire composition as a whole, I have to move my head around and view a portion at a time. With a longer lens, I can often see at least a dim view of the entire composition at once, though with a brighter spot toward the center. This is why I love that framing device I use. It allows me to see the entire composition at once, then look for subjects along the edge that help me to frame the same composition on the ground glass.

    • @UncleDobby
      @UncleDobby 15 днів тому

      Wow! Thanks for taking to time to reply. I often wondered if that was the case. Well done to you. I would struggle to carry out ‘edge patrol’ being that difficult to see a balanced image right across the frame. Thanks mate.
      PS: I bought the View catcher on your advice a couple of years ago. Very handy.

    Love it! As an eastern person who is completely unfamiliar those canyons, how do prepare for weather? I've heard that flash floods can happen even in sunny weather if there is a storm 100 miles away up the same watershed. Just curious if you check the weather for the whole region? You mentioned it rained overnight, is it a certain amount of rain you're on the lookout for? Like I said, I'm an easterner hoping to make it out there and I see videos and hear stories about people getting stuck in those canyon during flash floods and like to know your process!

  • @DannyFyffe
    @DannyFyffe 16 днів тому

    Ben: Seeing you set the camera up and take it down partially in many videos made me wonder how long does it average you to do that entire process? I'm sure it's a lot of work.

    what model of barefoot boots did you wear?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  16 днів тому +1

      I have the Vivobarefoot Tracker Decon, which is an older model now. It looks like there are quite a few options in the tracker series now, and it looks like the tracker leather is closest to what I have. I’ve been very satisfied with them.

    @chadpurser 15 днів тому

    If anyone wants to try barefoot shoes, here are my words of warning! Ease into them, a few minutes a day, and build up. If you wear regular boots, shoes, etc, your feet are not prepared.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  15 днів тому +1

      Excellent point, and that was certainly my experience when I first tried them. I started by walking the dog through the neighborhood with them, and I could certainly tell that different leg muscles were being utilized while walking. After a year or so of wearing barefoot shoes daily, I bought the hiking boots and the transition was quite natural.

    • @chadpurser

      @@BenHorne I took me about a year as well to get used to zero drop. I'm 51, so younger people can probably adjust faster.

    Videos are good except for the shaky video of walking feet, just saying.
