  • The Tower of Babel, plain and simple, was an act of rebellion against God. God commanded the people to scatter, but they stayed in one place and tried to make a name for themselves.
    Transcript:
After the great flood, people moved eastward settling on the plains of Shinar; rather than filling the earth and spreading out, the people stayed in one place. They said to each other, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens.”
The problem with the tower, however, was not the altitude, but the attitude of the people building it. Their pride led the people to rebel against God’s command.
With no thought of God, they wanted to make a name for themselves.
The Bible says that “the wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.”
Like the people of Babel, people work towards their own idea of heaven on earth.
The employee puts all his energy into working his way up the ladder to the top of his profession. The business woman grows her company and dreams of making more profit for herself. The artist wants to be more successful and make a name for himself. There is nothing wrong with ambition, but the danger is that when we ignore God and decide to go on our own way, we forfeit our very souls.
What are you building your life upon? What are you chasing after?
It might be entertainment, money or success.
The Bible compares the person living for these things to a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell and the floods came and winds blew and beat against that house and it fell.
For the people of Babel, the building work stopped, their common language was confused and their plans came to an end. Despite their rebellion and disobedience, God intervened and fulfilled His purposes.
For us today, even though each one of us have turned our own way, the Bible says that Jesus came to seek and save the lost.
Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
