Hunting for Japanese Exclusive Inks: Part 4, Nagoya

  • After visiting Tokyo, I headed down to Nagoya, where I had a couple of leads on some store-exclusive inks. I quickly found 25 Sailor store exclusive inks in vase bottles at the Penland Cafe, and somehow, left the city with only one bottle.
    While in Tokyo, searching online for store exclusive inks, I ran across the Mitasanshodo inks in their gorgeous cut-glass bottles. I was hoping that I'd be able to find them in Tokyo, but they were only available at a Mita-Sanshodo shop about a two hour train ride north of the city (maybe next time), so I ordered two bottles from their Rakuten shop.
    As usual, in this video, I swatch the inks and provide some modest writing samples.

    I absolutely love dark almost black inks that show its true colors once water is added..perfect for art sketches.

    Impressed with your travels. Nakasendo must have been a beautiful slice of history. It’s also fun to do a bit of exploring and find out of the way places like pen shops in Japan. That’s how you can find good food along the way and see the real country. Aloha

      I agree... a big part of the fun of hunting for inks is all of the rest of the strange and beautiful stuff that I find along the way that I'd otherwise miss. The Nakasendo was very beautiful, with brass bells stationed every kilometer or so along the trail for me to ring to scare off bears. Or, as a dinner bell, I guess.

      @AndrewWertheimer Рік тому +1

      @@thewetpen Happy no bears were fed while you were there. I look forward to the rest of your pen journey. I've been to Japan over a dozen times, but never made it to Nagoya or Nakansendo. (I had plans for the latter, but a volcano erupting not too far away made me cancel my reservations that time). I have to go back and check on those bears.

    I am not a fan of light blue ink. I am sure there were many other choices. I really like the vase bottles. Wish these bottles were available here.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  Рік тому +1

      Yes, we're in the same boat there. It seems that the vase bottles are being replaced by the new rectangular bottle as old stock is depleted... so the vase bottles will probably not even be available in Japan, soon.

    How did you travel with ink? Did you ship it back, or did you just put it into luggage?
    EDIT: Forgot to add, love the series!

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! I just put the ink in my luggage. These glass ink bottles are so heavy and small that there's not much chance of breaking, and I tightened the caps and loaded the bottles into heavy-duty ziplock bags before my flight home. The upside was that I didn't have to pay for shipping... the downside was that I had to carry all of that heavy glass and liquid... something like 15 pounds worth, by the end of the trip 🙂

    • @lazarmadzic3688
      @lazarmadzic3688 Рік тому

      @@thewetpen it was a good tip to know since locally I don't have many ink options, and though customs/security would make a problem when I flew for the first time a month ago. Now I have more reasons to spend money on too much ink. Thanks again and keep up the great work

      I haven't owned them long enough to really be able to tell. I think that I first opened these bottles a month ago. But I don't think that I've encountered any dye-based ink that doesn't have fading issues in sunlight. Well, not many, anyway.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  Рік тому

      @@TheDormousesDesk Before anything else, you might want to try this instead of the Rakuten website: www.mitaclub.co.jp/ It's in Japanese, but use Chrome to translate if you don't read Japanese rather than going to the English website (which is all sold out). The Japanese site has all kinds of other cool stuff, too... I wish that I had found it when I ordered... they have special inks and RUBBER STAMPS with these bottles on them! And for checkout, it's a Shopify site, so you can checkout using ShopPay or PayPal, etc. Might be easier... but I haven't done it myself.
      When I ordered, I just fumbled through it and hoped for the best, so I don't remember all of the details very well. But if you have any trouble with this checkout, let me know and I'll see what I can do 🙂

      @@thewetpen Luckily for me, a Japanese stationery shop here in Singapore has a good relationship with Mita Sanshodo and they import their products, both Sumi and Hana inks and some of their pens. They even have the Olive one which the Mita Sanshodo staff at the expo told me was exclusive in their Gunma shop. Oh well, they gave me a bottle of olive oil at the expo as well so…
