How can we ever forget out first love? Moira was a couple of years older than me (20 to my 17) and we fell deeply in love. "Not till Tomorrow" which is the album this song is from was the Ralph McTell album that we played in my grotty bedsit at Leeds university. We only had about 5 records including Melanie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and James Taylor and we played them over and over. She grew out of me - I had a lot of maturing to do. When I finally figured things out she was married to another man and had four kids - and I'm now a dad of two and a grandpa of four - but you only have one first song......
I only recently got into him, just knew a couple of songs for decades. Now in a deep dive, discovering an incredible artist. His writing, singing and playing are all exceptional and his music hits me deeply.
Love the way some of his songs have changed a little over the years- makes them stay fresh and possible takes into account vocal changes with age too. So glad hes still singing them for us.
Ralph McTell appeared in the Tradfest Folkgala concert in Dublin Sunday January 31. It was a great pleasure to listen to this legendary songwriter and performer. The video contains three of the songs he performed.
If you were asked to pick 3 Ralph Mc songs from his repertoire you would stuggle as they are all deeply moving and individual, but these three are a pretty stupendous start!
One of my favourite songs from Ralph is, I think, little known. It's called The Grey Sea Strand and, as far as I know, only appears as a B-side on the single England. But so many choices! Seek it out.
I must say this. This man has to be one of the greatest songwriters in the world. Thank you Ralph for you words.
Followed Ralph since the 70's. Great stuff!
I never get tired of listening to Ralph. These songs are timeless
