It's STOVL so the ramp assists with the short take off of the F35B aircraft. CATOBAR was considered but fitting it became too expensive so the original ramp STOVL configuration was reverted to.
@@hoogmonster Also gives them more flexibility and a similar sortie rate as the Nimitz class. And above all gives them the ability to launch in much worse weather than CATOBAR.
