  • Abraham Lincoln once said, "We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God." The nation of Israel was guilty of forgetting God and grew divided as they continued to do what was right in their own eyes. In this teaching, we study Gideon's conduct and legacy as judge over Israel, and we learn some essential lessons in wise speech and raising up a family.
This teaching is from the series 07 Judges - 2020 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church

Definitely the Proverb of the Night - “a soft word turns away wrath.” A great lesson for the diplomat as well as the family man. Nicely done exposition on the Old Testament vice of wrath.

Thanks Pastor Skip - you always hear unbelievers criticize the Bible for being an ancient text that no longer applies to modern society, but the accounts of these people in Judges make clear that although society’s “externals” have changed, human nature has not changed in the least! I also found verse 9:23 interesting “And God sent an evil spirit …” ie He can use both evil spirits and angels to accomplish His purposes…

Little late - not sure if this is proper sermon - but in this series you talked about “Lex Talipnis”. (Latin expression for eye for an eye…. In Mosaic law)
Mosaic law was groundbreaking as it was different from Hammurabi Code. Mosaic Law was to be applied equally no matter the “class” of people involved.
Hammurabi Code was equal as long as people were in same class. However if issue was between Nobility, commoner, or slave and people involved were in different classes the punishments were different. Favoring - you guessed it - nobility.

I really admired Gideon until I found out years ago that he came back to worshipping Baal again . That really made me feel so disappointed.
There are so many “ Christian religions these days that worship humans( Mary, Joseph, other human idols , ) and pray to those dead people more than worshipping God the Father , Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in One.
