    This is Feedback Friday #4. For this video, we will be talking about breathing. Breathing is the #1 cause of errors in freestyle. When you breathe late in freestyle it creates a flow on effect that results in less power, more drag, and overall slower swimming. This video will help you understand how to breathe in freestyle with the correct timing. If you like to see more of these videos, let us know in the comment box.

    This is probably the best swim advice I’ve gotten in 5 years. “...as the opposite hand enters” has made the difference! Now I can get down the lane faster and not swallowing water.

    Haven’t worried much about technique until the past 6 months; coming across effortless swimming. Of the feedback Fridays I’ve found this has been the hardest to relies and change. Comments like windmilling and “nothing out in front” caused me to think am I doing just that. After a month of trying to change technique, the only way has been to focus on holding the glide on the forward hand, recovering the back hand to meet the forward hand before committing to the pull. In the mean time I’m sure all else has gone to hell but think that can be recovered once this becomes automatic. Great swimming videos and will be doing one of your freestyle clinics soon.

    Thank you! I’m into slow & long distance swimming. So the right time to initiate the head rotate to breath is when the hand enters the water and the latest time to complete the head movement back to look down would be when the other hand enters the water?

    When practicing at 1.5sec/stroke with 2-beat kick and every 4-stroke breath, I was taught to keep front quadrant style. Came across with your video when searching for how to breath smoothly. But at 1:40 of this video, the swimmer position is a bit different from what I am learning now. "Why You Can't Swim Front Quadrant Freestyle
    " at 10:08 is more of what I am aiming at. But the breathing timing and sequence are still difficult. Any difference if swimming in front quadrant? Felt like not enough oxygen even when doing 2-stroke breath at the end of 50m lap. Tried breathing out through nose (and a bit mouth to clear airway) before the head turn but still felt gasping for more air when breathing in. Appreciate for all the amazing contents your shared on UA-cam.

    Started using the tempo trainer to time my two beat kick rather focusing on my stroke rate...found it much easier to keep my pace when focusing on the legs vs the arms. the arms just flowed naturally in time to my leg kick. Kinda weird.

    I'm a newbie but ain't you meant to keep your stretched out arm floating on the water to assist with gliding?also only paddle with one arm at anytime? And ain't you meat to keep your elbows as high as possible when paddling to produce more efficient andpowerfull stroke? Like I say I'm a newbie so any advice would be appreciated..

    • @mtscott
      @mtscott 2 роки тому

      Gliding = loss of forward momentum. Your hand should catch straight away. As soon as your hand enters start to drop the hand/keep the elbow high and pull straight backwards by engaging the big lat muscles.

    We see a right kick during left hand catch followed by left kick during left hand pull
    In ua-cam.com/video/wvVZZy-8fv4/v-deo.html
    is is said that we want a left kick during left hand catch follow by a right kick ruing left pull.

    Question, i thought you should hold your air as long as you can,only blow out when you ready to take another breath. Having air in your lungs allows you swim further-not to sink. Correct me if I am wrong. Thansk

    • @ahcryz2543
      @ahcryz2543 3 роки тому +1

      If you don't breath out, your lungs take all oxygen and transfer it into CO2, your lungs will be full of CO2 and there wont be any place for oxygen, when you come up, you'll start gasping for air. lungs always has air it will collapse if it doesnt, having more air help you float easier, you still can float with low amount of air but you'll sink little bit and you'll need strong and faster catch and kick.

    like every 2 stroke .. every right catch ?
    or every 4 ? ... or every 3 both sides ?
    or hold it as much as u can . for 6 or more and don't count just breath when u are out ?

    • @Northern125125
      @Northern125125 7 років тому +1

      As far as I know, most professional swimmers breathe every 2nd stroke, on the same arm. I breathe every 3rd, changing sides.

    • @janebonka
      @janebonka 7 років тому +2

      That depends on your technique, stroke and distance you are swimming.
      For example, if you have a loping (or jumping) technique, then the only option you have is to breathe every 2 strokes, meaning you only breathe to one side. The loping technique is most used in the 200m freestyle. If you have an even technique (lets say Park Tae Hwan ), then you can breathe every 3 strokes, - to each side. What also matters is the distance. So if you are swimming a 50m freestyle, your best interest would be to breathe as little as possible. In a 100 m distance, it really depends on the person. I personally breathe every 4 while swimming 100m. For the longer distances, it is not recommended to breathe less than every 3 strokes, as your body will start to lack oxygen and your muscles will lactate causing them to burn. That's it from me :)

    How is that woman swimming like that...when I try I get tired and even feel like I'm drowning. It is almost effortless with her. I know it isn't strength (definitely not I'm physically stronger) , and I question VO2 max as I've had a high reading on that. It has to be technique and 'flexibility'... but it is difficult to get the stroke right. It is easier said than done. Another thing, which is never mentioned is that swimmers should be in a form of hypoxia and certain people handle that better than others. It has not be measured in swimmers but I believe they are dealing with a mild form of hypoxia while swimming, more so than people who are on land.
