This movie made me really understand and feel for Anita in a way I never have. She looses the love of her life, has to identify his body, then is forced to give a police report with no time to process or grieve. Then, finally, when she is able to go home and be with someone who should understand what she’s going through, she finds Maria with Bernardo’s killer, gets (justifiably) upset and ends up being the one to comfort Maria! Then she gets blown off and disrespected by the detective, has to face the Jets at Maria’s behest and ultimately is assaulted. It’s no wonder she gave up at that point and told them Maria was dead. She wanted Tony to hurt and to protect Maria. She was probably also so emotionally spent and traumatized that it makes perfect sense why she said what she said. I know Tony and Maria are the main characters, but Anita went through the gauntlet that night.

Ariana is pretty much a lock to win the Oscar... She won the Golden Globe AND the SAG awards, the only time a Supporting Actress contender lost the Oscar despite winning both of those was Lauren Bacall in 1997, and that was because her movie was nominated for only two awards so the voters might not have watched it. West Side Story is up for 7 Oscars including Best Picture, so yeah no way Ariana loses this now. It's the most locked-in acting category this year.

This goes to show that you don't need such big mega A-list stars to make it sell. If you haven't already, make sure you go to a cinema & support this movie. I think it's really IMPORTANT to show the powers that be that when a traditional movie musical is released audiences are still interested in it & can still be financially successful.

Absolutely loved this remake but for me the balletic quality of Jerome’s chorey from the original movie just pips the chorey, esp in the two big dance numbers (dance at the gym and America). For me the dancing is just more sublime than Justin Pecks. I adore both versions and will happily rewatch again and again. Mike Faist 🙌🏼 was the standout for me. No disrespect to the original 1961 film adaptation whatsoever, it's remarkably crafted and performed, but this version left me in a romantic mood for the entire rest of December. @idaf Yeah, I've heard others recently saying he's not a good actor, and I'm no acting expert at all, but I don't see it, and I adore his performance in "The Fault in Our Stars" (yeah, I'm a gooey romantic, sue me), which is the main reason I was so excited for this version and convinced my mother to come to the theater with me (as she's such an obsessed purist for the 1961 version). In fact, if I had any small complaints about the latest version, it's that in the older film I fully believe that both Maria and Tony loved each other equally, whereas in the new film it's clear that Tony loves her more, as that's just the way Elgort plays it. (Also I feel like Bernardo was written / portrayed a bit too aggressive to be very sympathetic, but that's a completely different discussion). I can believe he's over-the-moon in love with just one glance. Maybe some viewers feel that he lacks the range required for the grittier and more in-depth layers, but in the romance department, in my humble and limited opinion, he's one of the most convincing male leads I've ever seen.

    • @idaf3028
      @idaf3028 2 роки тому +3

@@Wawagirl17 i definitely respect your opinion. To me he's a good actor but in terms of the chemistry he had with Maria that part lacked a little bit. i don't know maybe it was because they met in the span of 2 days but he was lacking something in the "i saw you and the world went away" department that's if i compared it to Richard Beymer's performance (who for me did a little too much chemistry). Some of his best moments in the film as his character were surprisingly with the supporting actors like Riff in the basement or Valentina in the candy store.

Caught up on your reactions finally. You're really entertaining and some of your one-liners are like "Wow, that's a good point".
    You would really like:
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde
Beauty and the Beast 2: The Enchanted Christmas
    Sydney White (has Amanda Bynes)
Big Fat Liar (has Amanda Bynes; actually a Frankie Muniz film)
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (better than the first one)
I have another list - including some other Disney films - of things you should see. But I won't post it unless you want me to. You can obviously copy and paste it and then delete the comment.

Probably the only movie remake that I'm willing to watch. IT was so well done and they didn't rush through any of the scenes for sake of runtime. They kept the length and kept the story and didn't try to change anything, except the fact that the female lead from 1961 wasn't Latino. I repect the hell out of that.

13:46 It means he's Polish. His parents or his grandparents were immigrants from Poland, remember Tony stands for 'Anton'.
Remember when Shrank was talking to the Jets about caucasian immigrants that climbed out of the slums and those who stayed? The Jets are either all the children or grandchildren of immigrants from Poland, Ireland or Italy (some may also be jewish). They're born in America so to some they're Americans but to others they're not "real" Americans, and they're basically seen as 'scum' or 'trash' because of their background, and also because they live in the slums.
The difference is the the Sharks are seen as even 'scummier' because they're from Puerto Rico and have different skin tones and accents.

Sondheim wanted to scrap the song. Here always hated it. He said that he was a young lyricist trying to show that he knows how to do complex rhymes, but it wasn't in character for a lovestruck teen.
Tony Kushner was determined to make Sondheim like "I feel pretty" by making it a parody of the snobby folk who shop at Gimbles. If that makes sense.

As much as I hate the boys for hurting Anita like that, I am glad Velma and Graziella were trying to help Anita get out of there and away from the boys. It was a nice nod to the fact that no matter what their skin color, no girl wants to see another treated like that.

Ansel Elgort was really good in this film I kept saying this guy should voice a Disney Prince. He'd make a good Flynn Rider if there was a Tangled remake.
I knew he could sing as he had his own album. One of his most well known songs is Supernova. Rachel Zielger was really good in her first film role. She's a cross between Vanessa Hudgens and Camila Cabello but more like Vanessa Hudgens

In regards to how good a fighter Bernardo is, basically he's a better ring fighter than street fighter. He was bobbing and weaving and landing some good hits on Tony but Tony does have like 4 inches on him height wise and I'm not sure about weight so hypothetically Tony could have been in a higher weight class if he was a boxer. But also, Tony played by street rules and tackled him and with that size advantage got the opportunity to get some nasty hits in. Tbh. Bernardo should have fought dirty too against Tony.
