Speaking of The Shadow's outfit, my headcanon is that he used to dress in all black until he fought the Voodoo Master for the first time, when he wore his red outfit. The Shadow liked the red so much that he started using it to accent his outfit.

One of My favourite parts of the shadow strikes is when his agents jokingly consider forming a union and The shadow, for the first time in any comic I've ever seen, actually looks worried. I just found it funny.

I saw The Shadow in theaters with my friend when I was in 4th grade and we loved it. I remember the ending reminding me of Enter the Dragon. Later I came to find my grandpa a Detroit cop was a major Shadow and Phantom fan and he got me hooked. The 90's was an awesome time for pulpy hero movies, great times. I thought Alec played Lamont and William played The Shadow back then lol.

I will say for one, that despite all the flaws of the 94 movie, it is one of the reasons I am a shadow fan at all.
    Long live Lamont!

As an aspiring writer, I'm absolutely floored by how Walter B. Gibson was both insanely prolific and unapologetically good at the same time. That is a special talent that deserves to be commended.
Man, all of that stuff about Al Capone flew way over my head. Gotta reread both of those stories.
A real shame about The Shadow Strikes, what a great series it is. It sucks that it had to get the Chris Benoit treatment due to what Gerard Jones did. I understand not wanting to be associated with such a person, but... he wasn't the only one working on that comic. There was an editor, a penciler, an inker, a colorist, a letterer... why punish THEM by making their hard work (and they did a bang-up job on that comic) unavailable for all good people to see? Strike Gerard Jones' name if you must (though it's still not completely fair; one's misdeeds don't erase their accomplishments and vice versa), donate a percentage of the profits to charity and keep the art available to the public.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the 1994 movie. It introduced me to the character and even to this day, while I understand its flaws, I still really, really love it.

Happy Birthday Shadow, you old bastard! They really should do a board game with the Shadow similar to Solomon Kane. Have your agents and the Shadow fight against his rouge's gallery and have some sick miniatures to boot! Godspeed to Mr Gibson and may the Shadow lurk in the hearts of men for another 90 years.

Recently finished this one. I was surprised by just how much I found myself sucked into the story and the more realistic tone it took. The quality of Gibson's dialogue in this is something great. I did see the big twist with Monk coming, but regardless it was a solid plot point.
Getting the double novel was kind of a barely managing to snag it and I'm glad I did. Shame that they had to stop printing them.
A happy 90th anniversary to The Shadow and may he continue for many more years, hopefully out of the influence of communist run "entertainment".

48:47 Had to rewatch the video to hear what you had said about it (and because I love the Shadowcast too, really) since I just recently read that series. Hope you plan to elaborate on that comic in a future entry, it'll interesting to hear your points, because I hated it so much, haha. From the design who looks nothing like The Shadow, to the vulgarity, and specially the disrespect it shows for the character(s), it kinda pissed me off. If the dude who claimed that no other writer/artist had been a better match with a title than chaykin and The Shadow told me that the sun was going to rise tomorrow, I would start looking for night vision goggles asap.

Great history lesson on the pulps! Shows how influential they were to pop culture in general. Especially argosy, what with tarzan still being an American icon to rival Batman and Superman. And zorro too, he got popularity with all his movies, and the recent one with banderas. And there are countless references to his character trademarks, like the slashed z. It shows the pulp characters still have relevancy. No matter the decade. Are the zorro stories worth reading?

Considering everything that happened with Gerard Jones, there's a panel from "The Shadow Strikes!" #3 (the last one on page #18) that's kinda gross. It's still my favourite comic book series depicting the Shadow, and I thoroughly enjoyed re-reading it for the umpteenth time, but I cannot view the aforementioned panel in any other light anymore. Thankfully, that's the only such occurrence that I found in the series.
I'm looking forward to future episodes, especially the ones that will cover "The Shadow Strikes". I remeber nagging Dynamite Entertainment on their forum to reprint the series for quite a while, and once the ugly news about Gerard broke out, I just went and bought the complete series on EBay.
Btw, it should be rather easy to reach Mr. Tollin via "Agents of the Shadow" group on Facebook.
    Keep rockin'! \m/

To my mind the name Nick Savolli bears striking resemblance to one Nick Civella.
Civella is credibly believed to have orchestrated a brutal mob hit on opposing mobsters in a Kansas City (which at this time was more violent than even Chicago) Democrat district office. He later went on to become the Boss of the KC Mafia.

    • @TheShadowcast
