You might already know this now but as well as a new doctor, there is a new showrunner Steven Moffat, who penned this episode and had written The empty child/The doctor dances two parter, the girl in the fireplace, blink and the silence in the library/forrest of the dead two parter.
Well done. The best, most reaction-worthy episodes in season 5, imho, are 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The others--2, 3, 6 and 8--are not bad, but the ones I listed are essential. You are going to love this season.
Matt Smith has an incredible skill of encapsulating the ancient age of a Time Lord and the youthful excitement of a child within one person. He's a delight.
That IS true! Personally I prefer Tennant over Smith by far, but Smith really looks like he has an ancient soul, combined with (albeit sometimes too much) youthfulness and chaos.
Yeah, I was a bit worried that Matt Smith looked too young when he was first cast but by the end of 'The Eleventh Hour' that was put totally to rest. Ancient and youthful is a good way to put it.
I completely agree, but don't feel he got that down in his first series. By series 6, he was even physically embodying it with the slow movements, occasional shoulder slump and calmer demeanor.
I actually think the dramatic moments under Moffatt work better than they did under RTD, if only because they aren't omnipresent. Moffatt rarely descends into melodrama, whereas RTD rarely emerged from it.
"Hello, I'm the doctor. Basically....RUN" Little Amy trying feeding the doctor is one of my favorite Matt Smith moments, and Amy is my favorite companion to this day. ps. the actress playing little amy is actually Karen Gillan's (big Amy) cousin irl.
@@dresdenfan88 Yeah much better than: "Have I already mentioned often enough in this episode that I'm a lesbian? Because this may come as a surprise to you; I am a lesbian! As far as New Who DOCTORS go, Matt Smith's introductory episode probably does the best job of introducing a new Doctor over any of the others. And refer to them by their numbers OR by the actor's name. Either way, we'll know WHO you're referring to, but for ease as the numbers keep adding up, the actor seems to have become the most convenient shorthand in fandom.

The three-season thing isn't so much a rule, as it is a pattern. It's partially Pat Troughton's fault. He took over from Hartnell as the second incarnation of the Doctor, and over three years was pretty much worked into the ground. After him, Pertwee lasted for five years then Tom Baker for seven. But early after taking the role, Peter Davison, the fifth Doctor, met with Troughton in a parking lot and was advised to go for three years then bail. So, he did. And since then, sometimes by accident but often on purpose it's kind of become this thing. There's no reason why actors necessarily have to move on after three years, but the notion is in place and they tend to hew to it as a model. More or less.
I read this somewhere and I couldn't find it. I knew it came down to the second Doctor. And Tennant is close to Davison (obviously), so he was certainly done after 3 seasons. Personally I could have dealt with 4-5 seasons of Ten and Eleven, I would have liked to see more of Nine as well but he was supposed to just introduce a new generation to Who and there definitely was no chance of him lasting longer (that's a can of worms).
@@Mrazmatmahmood It's very bizarre (and not a little disheartening) to think that (not counting specials) we haven't seen a fourth season from any actor since Tom Baker.

I know it's gonna be hard, but try not to compare Matt to David. They're playing the same role (The Doctor), sure. But they're two different versions of that role... You’re awesome ! Your reaction to End of Time was so emotional, and I had exactly the same kind of feelings going into series 5 / Matt Smith for the first time as you had here. What I would say is : - It *is* a different show. Take it as a different take on the age old myth of The Doctor. Series 1-4 were Russel T Davies’ take, series 5-10 are Steven Moffat’s. But both those guys were lifelong fans of the show and, both in their own ways, they really GET what Doctor Who is about. - Steven Moffat is an amazing writer. While some fans, including me, might prefer the Russel T Davies era a bit more, come on, you gotta hand it to Moffat : he is crazy talented. His episodes form series 1-4 are absolute classics and his era as showrunner is epic, full of bigger-than-life plots and huge emotions. Knowing that you like Sherlock, you’re gonna LOVE it. - Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi are AMAZING as the Doctor. While Tennant is my favorite for sentimental reason, I think Smith and Capaldi might actually embody the character even better than him. It is so hard to play a character who can be young (childlike) and old (900 years old) at the same time, but they do it perfectly ! So wise, old, sad, joyful and kind. As The Doctor should always be !
The actress who plays young Amy doesn't get enough credit. She's our first impression of Amy, and she sets up the character beautifully, a really great performance. She would have been a great companion even as a kid (except all the problems with that, of course).
@@JustSoShayla well I dont know about canon as Doctor Who resides in the Marvel Universe and Legends of Tomorrow is DC. However, timelinewise, Aurthur was Rory prior to being Rip
And, of course, you're right - the show feels entirely different. Moffat's dialogue is certainly a lot faster than RTDs was - perhaps thanks to Moff's background in sitcom writing. The budget's also bigger and there's more of a emphasis on plotting rather than before - in every way it's a new show. You said it was too early to characterise the Doctor for you - I won't say think spoilery, but I think the one phrase that for me sums him up better than any other and it's from that wonderful scene between him and Amy in the Tardis: "Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me ’cause it’s important. And one day your life may depend on it. I am definitely a mad man with a box."
Just a reminder that Karen Gillan was also in The Fires of Pompeii with Tennant AND Capaldi, and that she plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When it first aired 13 year old me felt so much grief for 10 going into 11. Little did I know I was about to fall head over heels in love with the doctor, the companions, the new Tardis, the storylines, the series arcs, the music (GOD I love the music)
Oh - that's brilliant - I'm really, really glad you took a bit of time out after the end of S4 specials - it's good to get some perspective - and you will, at least in a small way, be coming to S5 as fresh as the new showrunner, new companions, new Tardis and, of course, new Doctor.
Yes, time isn't just wibbly-wobbly, it's a fractally-branching tree of possibility, a flickering electric circuit through a plasma field and an infinite, messy stack of flat circles, too, so all The Doctors that have ever been or will ever be are out (or in) there somewhere! Even the 1960s movie Doctor Who, whom I personally think is the 10th Doctor's doddering old human-hybrid hand-clone after he builds a TARDIS from scratch many decades after being dropped in the Tyler-verse.
Well Matt is my favorite New Doctor but Tom Baker is the best Doctor of all time. I didn't think I would like him because he's the first Doctor that's younger than me but damn if he didn't do it. Enjoy!
watching a show as it comes out gives you time to fully think about everything that happened and let those feelings subside, but when you're binge watching something, it's just one thing after another, after another, and after another. You get hit with everything with no time to calm down and it makes everything so much more breathtaking and intense! I wish I could experience bingeing Who again jskdaslhjadsh
Lots of people weren't ready to say goodbye to David Tennant as the Doctor... I know plenty of people who still aren't over it. A lot of people started with Tennant, and as they say, "you never forget your first Doctor."
Trust me, you'll always miss the 10th doctor but this doctor will grow on you fast. I just found your channel and watching these videos reminds me of my first time watching doctor who. So you've got a new subscriber
David Tennant will always be my favorite Doctor, but I love this episode, and I think it was the best introductory episode of any of the Doctors, as it did kind of serves as an entrance point for new viewers while also having a great story.
Seasons 1 through whenever the tenth doctor regenerates. After that I watched Matt smiths time as the week to week and when David Tennant and Billie Piper come back in whichever episode it is I feel the emotion more because I still think and miss their characters. It almost feels like seeing an old friend who you haven’t seen in years.
15:35 this is a reference to the last episode of s7 part 2 where Doctor goes back in time to meet the young Amy to tell her all about the adventures she's gonna experience
I remember when Supernatural had that woman use "Amy Pond" as her pseudonym and Sam gave a little nod and said, "Nice name." I had already been watching Doctor Who at that time, so it was fun.
New Doctor, new companion, and a new showrunner; Yes it has the feeling of a new show because the show regenerates just the same as the Doctor. I know of no other show that can do this. I enjoyed your reaction and look forward to your upcoming videos.
theres nothing wrong with loving the past doctors. To this day 10 is my favorite Doctor but I also enjoyed every second of 11. They are all so different so I think that they connect differently with each viewer. We all have OUR Doctor :)
Selina Merritt Totally agree. Mine is Matt Smith, but most of the other doctors have something to offer to the character. I love 10 and 12 as well. (I’m not including Classic Who in this discussion, it would be a blog, lol) Binge watching does heighten the effects, so do take a break if you need one. It’s so hard to lose a doctor and companions too. It’s can get quite emotional. BTW, Doctors can stay as long as they like but 3 is about the average. It’s a had role to play, burn out is a big factor.
Mofat did some episodes in previous era actually. First season Empty Child/Doctor Dances, second season Girl in the fireplace, third Blink and fourth Silence in the library/Forrest of the dead.
Aw, Shayla didn't show her reaction to "Amy Pond there is something you better understand about me 'cause it's important and one day your life may depend on it, I am definitly a mad man with a box!"
Here's the schedule for 'New Doctor' emotions: "I'm not going to like this new Doctor" After their first series: "Yeah... he's ok. Not as good as the previous one, though" After their second series: "I'm really starting to get used to him now!" After their third: "He's become my favourite :) No,he's regenerated! I'm not going to like this new Doctor :( "
Christopher Eccleston supposedly didn't really want to do the show but agreed to do one season as a favor to Russel T Davies. Its a shame he didn't want to do more. Hes hands down my favorite doctor and played the nuances of his incarnation (including things yet for you to see) exceptionally well
Well, you have now met my favorite Doctor. This was actually the first episode I ever watched, and this is what got me hooked. Like you, I went in with fairly high expectations thanks to several Whovian friends, but I was not expecting to fall in love with this show within 5 minutes. I swear I got chills the first time I heard the theme tune (which is now my ringtone). As for the show feeling completely different, that's normal. It always does after a regeneration, especially if there's a new showrunner as well. It might take a little getting used to, but if you liked Sherlock, I think you'll like this era of the show as well. :)
Fun fact, I read somewhere that the reason this Doctor's hand (Matt Smith) sometimes hits him when he is being stupid because it's still Tennant's hand due to the fact that it was cut off and then regenerated. So, this Matt Smith's hand is younger and it's still Tennant's hand proventing him from doing stupid things. That would be so cool if it was true xD
Looking back on this episode I'm seeing how many arc words got crammed into this episode; not only do we have the crack in time, but we've got the Pandorica Will Open, we have Silence Will Fall- that's not even until two seasons from now- et cetera
In case you don't like my ramblings, the reaction starts at 7:40...enjoy everyone!
What are the season 5 episodes you’re going to react to? Great reaction btw!
Btw, its "Moffat" not 'Moe-fat'. Lol, like Hoff etc.

But 11 I personally absolutely hate. 4 and 5 indeed absolutely are awesome although some people hate them because of certain changes in the rules.
The End of Time, Part 1 was 1 January 2010, The Eleventh Hour was 3 April 2010 (a similar gap is between previous Christmas specials and the next episode).
I know it's gonna be hard, but try not to compare Matt to David. They're playing the same role (The Doctor), sure. But they're two different versions of that role... If that makes sense. xD
Each version of the doctor has different everything, from look to personality. And each actor has good AND bad points. They're all portray the doctor in very different ways.
Basically what I'm trying to say is just go with it. Enjoy it all, and have fun.
Loving these reactions btw. 👍
Some of the best advice I've heard for going into a new Doctor
yes matt is my favorite new who and second only to tom baker but i loved david tennant to and his stories and ecclestons and all the classic who doctors make matts doctor so much more
This is why I don't pick favourites XD. The Doctor(s) and also the companions.
Each Doctor has their own quirks, good and bad. Same with companions. That's why I usually focus on the positive. :D
i feel while 10 is more reserved, integrated; whereas 11 swings through more extremes.... almost like he's thrown all caution to the wind
@@azizuladnan2957 I don't pick favourites, either. They pick me! 😁
Fun fact : Young and old Amy Pond actresses are cousin in real life and they never had the occasion to meet until they do on stage ( familles living in distance or something like that ).
So the previous show was the Lonely God. Now it is a Fairy Tale.
watching with my headphones and hearing your family in the background keeps making me freak out thinking there are people in my house XD love the reactions tho
Love the ramblings, this isnt my doctor but he's damn good
Great channel
Thank you!
You’re awesome ! Your reaction to End of Time was so emotional, and I had exactly the same kind of feelings going into series 5 / Matt Smith for the first time as you had here.
What I would say is :
- It *is* a different show.
Great comment, gonna take this info to heart.
Loved your reaction as always!
My favourite Doctor! 😆😆😆
The actress who plays young Amy doesn't get enough credit. She's our first impression of Amy, and she sets up the character beautifully, a really great performance. She would have been a great companion even as a kid (except all the problems with that, of course).
9:58, Shayla: "This little girl has stolen my heart."
Oh, Past Shayla, you don't know the truth of that statement yet.
Technically speaking David is still the Doctor and alive. He is living in a Parallel World with Rose. You will love Amy and Rory.
Rory Williams became Rip Hunter afterwards.
Lord Freeza exactly 😁
Ah canon!
@@JustSoShayla well I dont know about canon as Doctor Who resides in the Marvel Universe and Legends of Tomorrow is DC. However, timelinewise, Aurthur was Rory prior to being Rip
Rory is the Chuck Norris of Doctor Who.
You said it was too early to characterise the Doctor for you - I won't say think spoilery, but I think the one phrase that for me sums him up better than any other and it's from that wonderful scene between him and Amy in the Tardis:
"Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me ’cause it’s important. And one day your life may depend on it.
I am definitely a mad man with a box."
Yes yes yes!
Basically, you're going to love the hell out of him.
Most of our reactions were the reverse of what you had when seeing Rory. When Arthur Darvil became Rip, most of us said “Oh hey, It’s Rory!”
Haha I am backwards!
Oh - that's brilliant - I'm really, really glad you took a bit of time out after the end of S4 specials - it's good to get some perspective - and you will, at least in a small way, be coming to S5 as fresh as the new showrunner, new companions, new Tardis and, of course, new Doctor.
Thank you, glad I did as well.
Same man. Same memories. Different personality. Different TARDIS interior.
btw 10 is still out there trapped in a Parallel Universe with Rose Tyler :)
Well to be fair all the doctors are still out there you know wobbly time stuff
Yes! Agreed with your take on binge watching.
Lots of people weren't ready to say goodbye to David Tennant as the Doctor... I know plenty of people who still aren't over it.
A lot of people started with Tennant, and as they say, "you never forget your first Doctor."
Matt Smith really grows into the role over the course of his tenure, and watching you react to that is going to be amazing!!
Trust me, you'll always miss the 10th doctor but this doctor will grow on you fast. I just found your channel and watching these videos reminds me of my first time watching doctor who. So you've got a new subscriber
David Tennant will always be my favorite Doctor, but I love this episode, and I think it was the best introductory episode of any of the Doctors, as it did kind of serves as an entrance point for new viewers while also having a great story.
love to see others that are a passionate for Dr Who as I am. great video..I subscribed..now a fan..keep the reactions coming... :)
Eleven is a little crazier than usual right out of his regeneration XD But Matt Smith settles into the role wonderfully
It was like 3-4 months later. The special was new years day the series 5 started late march/early April time
This was my first doctor who episode I ever saw. Was hooked ever since.
I remember when Supernatural had that woman use "Amy Pond" as her pseudonym and Sam gave a little nod and said, "Nice name." I had already been watching Doctor Who at that time, so it was fun.
9:53 I THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST GONNA LEAVE IT AT. HE CAN'T COUNT. I'M LOSING MY SHT
New Doctor, new companion, and a new showrunner; Yes it has the feeling of a new show because the show regenerates just the same as the Doctor. I know of no other show that can do this. I enjoyed your reaction and look forward to your upcoming videos.
Thanks!
I think you're going to love this series
10 and Rose are still running around in the universe with Big Finish audiobooks.
I love that you were saying “different, like it,” about the new credits and immediately hit the skip ahead button!! 😂😂
theres nothing wrong with loving the past doctors.
It’s a had role to play, burn out is a big factor.
;)
New subscriber alert. I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy your reactions. You've got so much to look forward to. You'll love Matt Smith.
Thank you!
@@JustSoShayla DT was my favourite and his regeneration hot me hard. It was tough but you'll grow to love Matt Smith... And his new companions too!!!
You'll grow to love 11 and Amy and Rory as this series goes on. trust me.
"started talking to myself after a while" takes on a whole different meaning after Day of the Doctor
Your reactions are so cool!! I cant wait for you to watch all of this season and doctor!💞
Thanks!
That denial prediction became *scarily accurate* a few years later, oof.
That's what I thought
Mofat did some episodes in previous era actually. First season Empty Child/Doctor Dances, second season Girl in the fireplace, third Blink and fourth Silence in the library/Forrest of the dead.
The girl who waited
This show always hits the emotions hard and that just shows you how good it is
You're right about Amy; she is tough to describe. You have to get to know her. Have fun.
"New credits! Different! Like it!"
(Immediately skips them)
Aw, Shayla didn't show her reaction to "Amy Pond there is something you better understand about me 'cause it's important and one day your life may depend on it, I am definitly a mad man with a box!"
Here's the schedule for 'New Doctor' emotions:
"I'm not going to like this new Doctor"
After their first series:
"Yeah... he's ok. Not as good as the previous one, though"
After their second series:
"I'm really starting to get used to him now!"
After their third:
"He's become my favourite :)
No,he's regenerated!
I'm not going to like this new Doctor
:( "
“I think you should try a banana” bananas are good
You skipped the intro? It's a massive change. I feel betrayed.
This episode actually doesnt have any intro.
@@zlee001 ?
zact lee the title sequence featuring the logo and Tardis that’s what jimmy meant
She had to edit stuff out, even stuff she wants to include, or the BBC would take down the video
@@ooooneeee I was the fact she clicked the skip button.
ive been watching since 1983 when i was born, the feelings dont fade with time, if anything it made my heart jump when rose came back
The 11th Doctor has so many good stories. A lot will blow your mind. You're gonna love it!
Btw I hope you watch the minisodes...
I'm happy you liked it! Season 5 and 6 are my favourite seasons so I am looking forward to the others, I promise you will love them
Yo I HEAR ZERO SAY PANDORICA AND I WAS LIKE WAAAAHHHTT NO WAY! I mean I didn't know it went that far back but dam, took me by surprise
Welcome to the new era :) you'll fall in love with it very soon
I cannot bring nothing, so I come back my home and sleep.
