- As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. These are the biggest tomatoes I've ever grown! I'm amazed at how big they got. And to make things even more interesting, I grew these in an EarthBox. I've discovered "Container Gardening"
and I won't go back.Everything I've grown this year in containers have done so well this year. In fact, this is the first year that I've done any serious container gardening. I have several EarthBoxes planted in tomatoes, peppers and okra. All are producing much more than I could have imagined.
Check out these tomatoes, and all the other veggies that I'm growing in EarthBoxes and Self-Wicking Tubs. I think you'll be surprised at how successful these containers are doing.

My favorite tomato is Cherokee Purple but Brandywine is a close second. Congratulations on a beautiful garden this year!
Thanks!
Beautiful!! Those tomato plants are beautiful!
Thanks so much
Everything looks awesome, them maters look great.👍🏻
Thanks 👍
That’s pretty amazin’! I’m still trying to grow regular sized tomatoes. Lol! Still learning though. This year I went with a higher phosphorus as well but got started late. We shall see. Blessings to you! 🌱💜🌱
You can do it!
Patience... 😎
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
More to come!
I grew a 2.2 lb. Beef master last year and I have about 3 or 4 that look that size still on the vine. Nice tomatoes there Allen! I agree! Pink Brandywine tastes the best!
Wow... 2.2LB is huge !
Interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
WOWZER! Thanks for these tips 👍🏽🙌🏽👏🏽
Happy to help!
I'm getting more earthboxes this winter..they are the best
👍👍👍
Alan - first time I've noticed your little "windmill" on the barn, what are you using that for? Any wind-powered things on the farm?
It is a wind generator that has recently stopped generation power :(
I will use your advice on all the fertilizers next year!
Great!
Some of the biggest ones I've grown recently have been Mr Stripey, Pepes Gigante, and I got theese from Renaissance Farms. org .. not affiliated but I've ordered many seeds and those as a new tomato grower love them. They produced
Good to know. I'll check them out!
Now that's the best picture of a tomato...on a sandwich! Bradley Tomato is my favorite slicing tomato. I just ate my first red snapper this week....it was a good eating tomato. This is also the first year I've tried Sun Gold...those things are like eating candy! Great video!! Thanks for sharing.
😎👍
Do you have a video on the irrigation to the tubs? How do you get fertilizer in the drip system?
Here's the Injector system: ua-cam.com/video/Lgrjln_4cwE/v-deo.html
@TexasPrepper2 Thanks! I'm in Central TX also, so I greatly appreciate all your garden info that's really relevant to my growing area. 💜🌿
Omg i was going to just grow brandywine tomato and other heirlooms but was told it cant be done in containers. But you sir have proved those folks wrong and gave me some hope and determination to I grow a brandywine and other heirlooms in containers so thank you!
They did really well in containers.
If you want a LOT of tomatoes for canning and freezing, you might want to consider adding a hybrid or two.
These heirlooms have a great taste, but usually aren't really prolific.
I like the Red Snapper (hybrid) tomato from Hoss Tools.

@@BIGALTX Thank you for the link. I do have one determinate that i will grow also, I’m probably going to start one more prolific determinate to go with the one I have.
@@BIGALTX also what size are those grow bags?
@@pureluck8767
10 gallon
@@BIGALTX thank you
wonderful, love your channel, you rock sir!
Thank you kindly, Tina!
I told you the earthboxes will give you good tomatoes. I can not wait to try the products from Hoss this winter. Here in Florida I have had the best luck with cherokee purples in my earth boxes. I will replant from seed in september for my winter garden. I am going to experiment with the liquid products you discussed. I only use the earthboxes for my tomatoes. I will try the tub method this year too.
Sounds great!
Awesome vid thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
My tomatoes said peace out.
😀👍
I have a few tomato plants ready to start fruiting. Then I just planted some I seeded a couple of weeks ago.
Allen that's a big one. May I ask why it is so ruff and ridgey.
It's an heirloom.
Many heirloom tomatoes are like that.
Around here, we call that a "cat-faced" tomato.
I forgot to say that in the video :(
I just use them for hot sauce and spaghetti sauce. The hubby is the one that eats tomatoes by there selves.
👍😎
Very nice!
Thanks for the visit
@@BIGALTX , you're so very welcome!
TP2 - I'm in the DFW area (deep suburban garden) and my tomatoes look a lot like yours. Heat getting to them so I'm trying to cover them to see if this helps. Have you ever tried to cover your tomatoes to see if that can keep them bearing longer? I already clone, but never thought to extend my season by starting a second growth. Gonna try that this year and see if I can duplicate your results in a suburban settings. Thanks for the great videos!
I've seem folks use shade cloth in the hot part of summer.
Try it!
I wouldn’t mind collaborating with you on a Texas centered information channel
Maybe some other time. My plate is pretty full right now.
Sorry...
Put the tomatoes in a plastic shopping bag, and freeze them. You can then can them in the winter, so you dont over heat the house and you will have more time to deal with them.
We're going to freeze a lot of them for sure!
Are you not putting them in the ground because of the dense red clay soil in Northeast Texas? Why did you opt for containers?
Moles, gophers... control over weather (flooding, erosion, etc) and old age among other reasons 😎
In your wicking tubs...how many tomato plants per tub? One in each tub? Two in each tub? Or more?
I planted 2 in one tub (as an experiment) and 1 plant in several tubs.
I didn't see any difference.
@@BIGALTX Thanks so much for the info!!
Where can I buy some of those wicking containers?
You'll need to find someone who raises cows.
They feed protein in them during the winter.
Ask around and someone may have some empties.
I live in a valley where you can take a post hole digger into the ground like butter.
The soil is very very good here.
I believe that when the floods had receded that it had cut the valleys filling them with good soil from Noah's flood
Probably true :)
@@BIGALTX hey when the time comes when ever I order a Hoss plow, I will say that you have referred them to me

Is it too late in the season to use a high Phosphorus fertilizer? I have the same problem: too much green. Barely any maters.
I don't think it's too late... unless you have planted all "determinate" tomatoes.
They don't grow as long, so they might be ready to stop production and die.
You can certainly try... won't hurt them
Great videos! For tomatoes, which method (earthbox, bag, or tub) do you like best?
Hmmm... All work well, but if I HAD to make a choice, I would think the Wicking Tub has a little advantage
I explain it here: ua-cam.com/video/EklgdNg6WDU/v-deo.html
Thanks for the info. You’ve inspired me to try growing my own food. I placed an order with Bob Wells for some prime ark freedom but unfortunately they sold out for the season, so after some blackberry sadness I’m pivoting to trying my hand at tomatoes and peppers.
@@JB2653 You can do it!
How many gallons are those containers your growing your tomatoes in?
The wicking tubs are around 18 to 20 gallons... not exactly sure.
I had some in 10 gallon grow bags and some in EarthBoxes
@@BIGALTX awesome! Thank you so much
What can I use to stop black rot on the bottoms of my green tomatoes? And I am using wicking tubs.
I'ts called Blossom End Rot.
Calcium Nitrate should cure it, but it might take a week or so.
Here's an article I wrote on it: homesteadadvisor.com/tomato-blossom-end-rot/
TexasPrepper2 Thanks, the plants are doin great, and this happened. I put epsom salt and sea minerals in it with gypsum. But I will locate the calcium nitrate and give it a shot. Thanks again.
Has anyone tried painting grow containers with cheap house paint to make them last longer? House paint has UV protection, and it lasts 20 years on your house, so, just brainstorming. I'm going to paint my plastic buckets this year and hope they won't crack in the sun like always this time, I wondered if someone had beat me to the idea?
I painted one green with spray paint
Still looks pretty decent and it was a couple of years ago
Those are some beautiful plants and tomatoes. You did great. Mine are behind because we had a hard freeze mid-May so I didn't plant until June but they'll catch up. You'd asked for our favorites and we like the dark ones (Cherokee purple/carbon and Pruden's) and the sweet striped ones (Pineapple, Hillbilly) but we like all kinds. I quit counting at 30 varieties.
I must apologize-I sent you links for Texas Tomato Food and when I went to order they were so behind due to demand they'd suspended ordering for a time. The Amazon store was still accepting orders so I got it from there. That's my go-to fertilizer. It has more of a natural/organic component that supports the life in the soil. It was developed for hydroponics so it contains everything a plant needs but you've convinced me to try Micro Boost as well. We share our bounty with the local food pantry so the more veggies we get the better.
Several folks have told me about the Cherokee Purple... I gotta try them :)
With most vegetables I have better luck with more phosphorus. n-P-k.
I usually like a 10-20-10 for tomatoes and other veggies that produce flowers and fruit.
I started these out with 10-20-10 when I planted them (before going with the Hoss fertilizer)
If your going thru all that work why don't you grow only organic. Go tom a toes taste like wax
