You may like Designer Stitch! As far as sustainability, they actually offer projector files (if you have a projector). If not, they also add which pages to print per piece. Their sizes go up to 56-48-57 I believe, with cup sizes as well.

Personally I pretty much only sew pdf patterns that have AO sizing. I cannot be bothered with the taping. The nice part is because you are printing yourself, you can print multiple copies and no have to worry about tracing either!

Thank you for the video. I use a lot of pdf patterns from Sew Over It. Most of their video’s are based on the ‘60’s, and their sizes go up to 30. They also have a pdf club. And every month they have a new pattern release. That’s very nice 😊. By the way I have my patterns printed at a copy, they are easier to keep and you do not have to puzzle. But I get your addiction, I think that's my problem too 😉

For extra sustainable PDF printing use the back of used paper that already has stuff printed on it.

I almost only use pdf patterns. You get use to puzzling of the paper.
So it takes less time. Like you get use to making alterations 😊
Some companies have better assembly marks than others but it almost always works out in the end.

I definitely agree! I know a lot of people mention that the taping is what takes them away from the patterns, but I actually kind of appreciate it. It gives me an opportunity to see all the pieces, analyze the markings, and get a sense of the whole design just due to seeing the pieces come together as I tape it together. By the time I'm cutting out fabric and sewing it together, I have a better idea of what I'm getting myself into!

Super helpful and totally going to check them out! I've been subbed for a while and had no idea you're from the Bay; I'm a San Jose native and recently moved out of state. Back home there were so many places to get fabric, now my only "local" option is Hobby Lobby....

Been in SF for 12 years this summer (wow, the time flies!) And you're absolutely right about the fabric stores out here- there's so much fantastic selection! Maybe online fabric shopping is an option? I'm really loving Stonemountain and Daughter's online selection!

Love the pattern choices. I have bought a few PDF patterns when they had a sale. The problem I find is making sure I have enough printer ink and time to figure out how to tape them together and then cut them out- just takes so much time! Anyone else have a better way to get this done? I know they are designers and need to make money- I understand the price- but it’s super easy to purchase main stream patterns on sale and just cut them out - the tissue paper takes up less space after when folded too.

I like pdf patterns because in the caribbean where I am dont have big 4 so I can access pdf patterns faster and easier....totally wish I had someone who could buy me some big 4 for though, ofcourse I would send the money but as far as thats a no for now I use pdfs

I totally understand!! With the whole lockdown situation, I stopped visiting a majority of the places where I would buy my Big 4 patterns, so now I've been doing online shopping for those-- but the PDF patterns which I can work with right away tend to be the winners!

I still don't get how PDF patterns are sustainable. The amount of paper needed is incredible. I refuse to buy them for that reason. I look for indie companies that sell tissue patterns. They are much more compact and can be used over and over. Please help me understand how this is good. I'm 51 years old and have been sewing since I was 12. Luckily there are companies that give you an option. Plus, you're buying the pattern and then have to spend ink and electricity to print and time to put together. They may be making a bigger profit but it by no means sustainable.

Hey there good question, personally I weigh up that printing at my local library saves on shipping and packaging from the other side of the world (I’m in New Zealand). I also reuse my patterns many times, and maybe they last longer being on thicker paper?

It may be that pdf patterns are less environmentally friendly that purchasing tissue patterns (although this is difficult to assess as there's very little information available regarding the environmental impact of producing the tissue paper, the shipping all over the world - they probably aren't taken from the factory to their destination by electric vehicles). But they do take resources. The largest pattern I have printed out was 50 pages, plus tape, and a whole lot of time. Honestly I don't think that sustainability is the reason you'd chose pdfs but there are very many other reasons. I don't have local pattern sellers where I live. I have had to drive to the next country to find a store that stocks patterns by the Big 4 and even then they are last years patterns. So digital patterns give me access to patterns that wouldn't otherwise be an option. For me, It's definitely preferred over buying online, paying for postage (up to $20 and a couple of weeks waiting depending on where they are shipped from). They are larger to store, but once assembled they are also reusable. AND, even better, if your body changes sizes, or a friend of a different size asks you to make the same pattern, you have access to the other sizes. I have cut my paper patterns then put on weight and had to repurchase the same pattern before. Not ideal. The other huge benefit that I can see is getting access to indie designers who. They don't have the lag on design to release that the Big 4, but they also don't have the funds to have huge runs of paper patterns. The digital option gives those sewing creatives an opportunity to get their designs out there. I think that's a wonderful thing. So I am glad they are an option for those of us who don't mind using them.

Well PDF patterns are more sustainable than regular printed patterns because:
-you only print what you are gonna make
-you can print only the pattern pieces you need.
-the company doesn’t need to print an estimated number that could be too many and therefore wasteful
-the patterns doesn’t ned the shipping/transport/packing with the wasteful fuel and packaging and storing space.
      Bonus about pdf patterns:
      - small businesses can play along, (that has certainly provided more creativity and size range)
      - a lot of pdf pattern files have the option that you can print exclusively the sizes you need (less ink, less confusing)
-the prize is the same for everyone (no shipping)
-You can buy from all over the world and that gives you diversity and a lot of options.
-you can buy and and make whenever you want as long as you got internet and a printer
-pdf patterns gives makers and businesses the opportunity to offer free patterns!!

You still have shipping with the paper and the ink you're using in addition to more lumber being used for thicker paper.

@@shonaaitken7635 now that response make sense. I can see your point. The first time I tried out a PDF pattern i cringed. Someone brought up the point of shipping not being sustainable for tissue patterns but the same thing happens with the regular paper and the printer and the ink people buy. It just seems wrong to me to call it sustainable. In reality it's more profitable for the companies which is fine. It's more money in the pocket of fabulous designers that are bringing more cup sizes and sizes to us. They deserve more profit just don't call it sustainable. The ink and paper people use definitely requires more delivery to the stores and you going and getting it.

Hope you feel comfortable dipping your toe into it soon! Even a simple pattern like the Gable Top would be a fun win-- jenniferlaurenhandmade.store/product/the-gable-top/ Sewing it is straight forward, too, and it's one of the few patterns I've made with no alterations which worked out great!
