- Marthyn Jovanovic's analysis of Paul Mazurkiewicz - Drummer of Cannibal Corpse - playing "Hammer Smashed Face".
I hope this observation on Paul Mazurkiewicz's drumming helps you figure out for yourself which of his skills at the drum kit would be interesting for you to practice.

Damnit I missed it

Awsome band thanks! How about John Longstreth of Origin ua-cam.com/video/7NzzrpdwB4A/v-deo.html
Paul used to have a really bad posture playing drums which lead to back problems (LUMBAGO for the RDR2 players sic). He used to play with his knees much higher then his hips and leaned right forward putting lots of stress on his hip flexors and lower back. Over time he has adjusted his hip height and straightened his back out. He also used to angle his toms similar to how Dave Lombardo angles his toms but has flattened them out over time aswell.
Marthyn Jovanovic Joey Castillo!!!!!
Paul is such a legend.. He was one of the first extreme drummers I came across...
Love Paul he’s a fantastic drummer. Not technically the best by today’s standards but pioneering and plays with way more character. You can hear he’s pushing himself to his limits sometimes and it adds to the crazy feel of corpse’s music.
sounds frantic and chaotic. honestly fitting
The first time I heard a blast beat, and I tried to play one on a drumset, was because I listened and saw Paul Mazurkiewicz. Very influential drummer, with great records.
Same, I first learned by copying his open hand playing.
@@schloo great drummer!
You should react to gene hoglan.I suggest you react to him playing the philosopher by death
pls post the yt url of the video you want
Gene has a playthrough of The Philosopher on his own channel. (ua-cam.com/video/eGope68pHf0/v-deo.html this one in particular)
Yes Hoglan please
So much technique to discuss there.
Yes! One of my all time favorite drum tracks!!
Paul will be 50 this year but seems to be hitting harder than ever before. You need a good physical shape to stay sharp and it seems he is everlasting.
Thanks for interesting insights. Happy to hear that Dan Presland is on the list. He has been producing some craaaazy stuff recently.
his body is pretty broke too. From poor posture early in his career. Still kills the kit though
He plays hockey a lot, which is an intensive sport :D
@@BeardedDanishViking oh shit for real? I'm a big hockey fan...
Always considered Paul the Tommy Ramone of death metal, He doesn't have "correct" technique in some ways but he has an easily identifiable style and kept CC rooted in a thrash/death style as apposed to going more traditional tech death like a lot of bands did in the 90's, his drum parts are unique and well written.
Alex gets a lot of the credit in the rhythm section but they are both equally integral to the band's sound imo.
(plus his lyrics are great!)
Paul did lyrics for orgasm through torture.....a song I think more lyrical brutal than necropedophile
Best Drum teacher Reacts Video from best Song, best Band and best Drummer (except of Marthyn himself ;) Gratulations man, so professional!
:-) thank you
Glad for a new video brother. Was starting to wonder why we haven't heard from you in a few weeks.
Thx alot...I'm back 🤗
Thanks for another Reacts video, Marthyn! Love this series
What about something from Mario Duplantier?
Man what I love about Mario is his crazy precise foot technique. We gotta see it in detail!
Martti010 For me Mario isn't a drummer, he is a magician! :D I mean yeah his drumming is really good, but he gives the music this one thing that no other drummer can (if you know what I mean)
He did, he reacted to his performance of "Toxic Garbage Island"
He has m8
i saw the video of Marthyn reacting to toxic garbage island once and i was a little drunk, afterwards ive searched and searched for it but came to the conclusion that i imagined the whole thing :-|
Your insight is fantastic and you are an amazing drummer as well. Love this channel!
Thank you
You are the most technical reaction commentator out there. Awesome work man. I wish you would react to Hellhammer drum cam one of these days. Thanks!
thank you for all your videos on those drum techniques, i'm a metal guitarist but it's still really interesting to me to understand all this, well done ! thanks again !
Thank you for your dedication, Marthyn. It's always a big pleasure to watch your videos, although I don't even play drums. :)
Still waiting for a reaction on Ulcerate's Jamie Saint Merat, or Cryptopsy's Flo Mounier as usual. :)
Keep up the great work !
Really like those vids, one of the best drumming channels on UA-cam. Keep it up !!!
Great Video I love listening to Cannibal Corpse and Paul’s drumming 🤘
Awesome. Pumped for the next ones!
I've only watched the opening shoutouts and preview info and I'm already hitting the like button.
Excellent choice for the first video of the year. Cannibal Corpse are death metal legends. Spoke to Alex years ago, sound guy.
thank you!!!
Mario Duplantier
he already did it
Your channel is excellent, I’ve used your suggestions for increasing double bass speed to improved my down picking on guitar lol. These videos are also super awesome!
haha great
MAX KOLESNE FROM KRISIUN!!!!!!
Up!
Witold (Vitek) Kieltyka from Decapitated - Any song
Suggestion for reaction: Dan Presland of Ne Obliviscaris. He is an absolute machine.
will do 100%
This so much!! He got so many high quality videos out, pick whatever! supersexy drumming aswell...
I bought a shirt when I saw em open for someone cause the drummer impressed me
Well, someone was faster than I was :D Had this one in mind ua-cam.com/video/UgudL2znU_4/v-deo.html
Czarcie Kopyto pedals are absolutely mindblowing! The power and the quality is absolutely superior. Some drummers say that they cost a bit too much. But if you try one and experience the pedal irl, the case etc, you will notice that the price is actually quite generous. And the support from the guys at CK is pleasant and fast. They deserve all success they can get!
yeah I agree...their customer service is overwhelming- great company
Like always. Respect for your job, man
thx alot
Slowed down corpsegrinder kinda sounds like Chris Barnes
Really great video. Paul as I remember is self taught drummer and he never had any regular teacher. Similar to Inferno from Behemoth... Good to see "in pieces" how they play

I appreciate your channel, your work, your attitude and over all vibe. What I want to comment on is the definition of "official endorser". Clearly, it must be legalese-laden and/or I am missing something because afaik, you received a badass double kick pedal SPECIFICALLY because you are endorsing it on your channel.
Love your analysis videos though, Marthyn!
Love your videos,Marthyn...and you gotta love Paul...like many mentioned allready..about Paul"s technique,,its not the most "technical".......but in the end.it doesnt matter at all for my part at least. He has a unique style, and you can HEAR that it is Paul whos playing..and that it just fits perfect with the other 4 guys in CC...so it is fantastic to see and hear Paul drum.Anyways...Greetings from Norway,Stefan :)
Dude I would love for you to do these again. Particularly spencer prewitt of archspire. Dude has taught himself breathing patterns on top of drum beats so he can play at 360 bpm for over an hour. I would love to see your analysis of him
Not my genre, but completely respect, but actually enjoyed more when you half stepped it, but great talent and analysis . Half step sounds like charlie from anthrax. Lol Good job. You, yourself are talented. Thank you and happy new year.
thank you and happy new year
Czarcie kopyto's look so sickk!!
Awesome reactions, man! Please do one on mighty Frost! \m/
Just found this channel. Awesome video. Do a review of rings of saturn. Cheers!
Man you have some of the best most informative reaction videos 🤘.... I can’t stand the ones where people don’t know the bands or musical theory...
I'm sure playing bare-footed gives him a great feeling too :D Have you ever tried driving your car barefoot? So much better feeling! :D
he is good drummer ! nobody can replace him in CC .
I noticed the Thomas Lang signature pad but are those his signature sticks as well?
I started using the Lang sticks a couple years ago and it’s really made my drum playing a lot better and cleaner. Absolutely love the weight, width, and the acorn tip.
Hello Marthyn!
Small things like that toe on right foot you noticed are very useful - I did same things couple of years back but took some time till i noticed what was wrong hah.
Anyway, please do a video with Kevin Paradis of Benighted.
Thanks..,cheers!
Dunno if u done a video yet regarding Vinnie Paul of Pantera/Damageplan fame, but he was an absolute beast behind the drums.
RIP VINNIE PAUL. U will NOT be forgotten.!
I've been wanting Czarcie Kopyto pedals for a long time but they don't ship to America. :( still waiting though! And as always love your content! So inspiring!
Ben Koller of Converge has a tonne of bodycam footage of his concerts, which would be sick to see your analysis for.
Also Adam Jarvis of Misery Index has some amazing pedal skills. Conjuring the Cull is a good one.
cool, i've messed around with the corpse blast before but i need to incorporate more hammer blasts in my songs. great video!
thank you
Love these.
thank you
Super awesome analysis as always! I think though that he is not lifting his big toe, but playing with the outside of his foot. It looks like he has high arches, like myself; most of us underpronate or put more weight on the outer part of our foot.
Hey Marthyn, first off I really enjoy your videos. Very helpful and interesting.
I have a request for you though. I am constantly trying to improve my double bass drumming because I believe that's where improvement is most needed for me.
Do you have any tips for practicing double bass without using a drum kit? I try my best using the floor but would be cool to know your thoughts on it. If you have any specific exercises etc.
Cheers from Sweden!
Good to hear Ken Bedene!! As for Paul, I like his blastbeast style! Heavy and punching!
Nice Marthyn. My Czarcie Kopyto pedals arrived last Thursday. Wladyslaw definitely is a great guy. He offered me a position on the artist roster. Unfortunately I'm currently not in a band but I've been working on a solo project so hopefully when it's finally done I can join the family.
I did a brief video guide on my channel on Czarcie Kopyto pedals if anyone wants to find out a bit more about them.
Great video again. Shannon Lucas of Black Dahlia Murder would be great to see. Or Alan Cassidy
thx alot..pls post the yt url of the video you want...
I just realized, the blast techniques are named just like cannibal corpses' songs and name. cool coincidence
Yes waiting on that Ken Bedene analysis
Try to cover something from Sean Reinert from Cynic and Death! Amazing drummer that is an inspiration to allot of modern beasts today.
pls post the yt url of a live video you want...
@@drumtechniqueacademy sadly there aren't any drum cam videos of Sean where you can clearly see what he is doing, but I've found this: ua-cam.com/video/J5vagx9V050/v-deo.html
That's his playthrough of Evolutionary Sleeper by Cynic, take a look ;)
id love to see anything from human album from that angle.
RIP Sean
Great job. Love these videos. I would love to see something a bit lighter. How about Gar Samuelson from early Megadeth. Jazzy feel might be fun?
From the look of it, the switch from the corps blast to the hammer blast was not a choice. His left hand was slowing down so he just ran with it because it was easier to maintain. He had a lot of tension all over his body from trying to get power from shear force rather than good technique. He still played it well and people without drum training would never notice. With the genre he is in, most would assume it is just stage presence.
more videos please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to see you reacting to Deathspell Omega. The problem is they don’t play live (and we don’t even know their names). But there is a very good "cover” video on UA-cam (by a guy called infernal lord) and i would like to see your thoughts on the Abscission "cover"
I'd be really interested in your opinion of the Czarcie Kopyto pedals. I've been swapping back and forth between Axis and Trick for a couple of years now, and I know you've played both of those pedals too.
Cheers!
I'm guitarist and i like these videos. I want to learn drums.
3:13 I think you overanalyzed this a bit. To me, it just looks like he was sloppy in getting the hammer blast started. It happens a lot during live shows when drummers play a lot of blast beats
Could you react to Luke Holland? Maybe his playthrough of Tendinitis. Greetings man! Really enjoy your videos
Can you please react to Yanic Bercier's drum playthrough of: Gone in April - As hope welcomes death? Thank you in advance! Keep up the amazing work! I am a guitarist but I actually love your channel!
Any video from Mike Heller of Fear factory And malignancy would be cool to see you analyze. Mike has great technique and taught me a bunch on tour and he’s Great friend of mine as well. He was the first person that told me about those pedals.
finally someone giving props to paul for being the real deal, he doesn't needs to trigger the shit out of his kit to play death metal, I would have chosen a better song for the video though, this one is too frantic, in later releases his playing became more focused I would say.
I chose the timeless classic :-)
@MarsHolst20 nah, they have songs that are around or over 200 bpm, Evidence In The Furnace comes to my mind at once, fast enough for any modern drummer to trigger the snare and bass drums. And gimme a break, most tech drummers nowadays trigger their kits regardless of the speed they are playing, Pete Sandoval recorded World Downfall without triggers, speed is simply not a valid argument, it just makes playing easier, that's why most use triggers. Anyway, my point was that Paul gets some heat for not being such a flashy drummer but at least he is the real deal.
@@NickSwe it enhances sound quality and doesn't make it "easier" when most drummers with an already audiophile ear for overtones and shit like that have to pay extra attention even more with "triggers".
@@murk4552 yeah right, try recording without triggers and then ask the engineer if you made his life easier by playing that way, and count the takes you have to make to play a song while playing at 200 bpm. xD
Great stuff as always marthyn. It would be neat to react to Eugene ryabchenko playing lucifer incestus. With you having much experience with that song it would be cool too here your input on it. Cheers!
React to dirk vanbeuren! His work in soilwork is extremely well done!
Bobby Jarzombek would be a blast to analyze. Cheers!
You got it Marthyn !
When just one song is standing for a whole subgenre. ✊🎶🖤
Great video Marthyn. I've been waiting for you to analyze Kevin Paradis, he must be the best drummer in metal at the moment. Just watch the Benighted (sick drummer contest) video.
I'd be interested to see your take on one of Ken Bedene's live videos from drummers from hell. They're fucking unreal.
I met him. 1992. So cool. So mellow
I'd love to see you cover something by Adam Jarvis and do a break down of his technique.
Lyle Cooper during his time with the Faceless..the Ancient Covenant. There's amazing video on UA-cam for this. He plays with his eyes closed.
As far as drummers with a unique style, it would be cool if you did a breakdown of Dennis Ritchie from Macabre. Sick Drummer put out a couple of live videos of him on youtube.
Kirk Arrington the original drummer from Metal Church.
Instrumental Merciless Onslaught
What about Kai Hahto from Wintersun? :)
Those pedals are tops!
Guitarist here, never sat behind a drumset once, but damn, your Videos are amazing and interesting to watch!
I wonder - bare feet? Doesn't it feel strange, like, driving a car bare feet?
BTW; I love the way you have to hold yourself back to not headbang or play along. Good guy :)
What about reviews on monster drummers? Like thomas lang, virgil donati, jason rulo (symphony x), dave weckl, bobby jarzombek, mark zonder(fates warning), deen castronovo, mike terrana, etc...
Now I understand why some people who use these pedals say their second choice would be the iron cobra
I have the speed cobra and it is shit. Rattling after the 3rd week i owned it. Only way to fix the bearings is buy new pedals. Tama is garbage. Maybe not if u play slow.
Shawn Jones I have the iron cobra and the pearl dominator double pedals, I personally like the dominators more since it has somewhat of a longboard and they are a bit smoother
Great video! Quick question... I've heard several comments on the way Paul plays with his arms crossed instead of straight. It's more difficult? Your thoughts on that?
thank you...
do you mean when he's playing on the hihat with the right hand and on the snare with the left? thats actually pretty comon
Hi Marthyn great stuff as usual man. Can I ask you what are you using to play the double bass on, I mean that ''black circle''. I cannot seems to find a similar one. Thank you
