Interestingly enough, one traditional method employed for making top hats before the goss-layering method became common, was to block a wool or fur felt shell (same general method as in video, but by hand) then cover it with hatter's plush. I believe that many of the modern fur plush top hats employ the wool felt shell method, as the goss-layering method is somewhat of lost art. You get a heavier hat as a result. Also, a proper grey top hat will simply be made of blocked fur felt and finished in a similar manner to this video. Certain English firms mass-produce grey top hats in factories similar to the method shown here. However, the materials are of a higher quality and more detail is put into the finishing. Lastly, a top hat should only ever be worn with white tie, morning dress or a frock coat, with the occasion and/or attire dictating the colour and type of top hat worn, although a black silk or fur plush hat is sufficient for just about every possible formal occasion calling for one of the aforementioned dress codes.
A super quick and easy way to spot an inferior bowler is the way the brim is curled. A bowler with some semblance of quality will usually have a really tight brim curl referred to as a D'Orsay curl. It takes skill to put one of these on a hat.. The cheap "fancy dress" versions (usually made of wool felt) tend to have their brim simply turned up at the edge, at a roughly 90 degree angle relative to the flat part of the brim. This is actually quite easy to do and is a sign of cutting corners to lower production cost. The brim binding is then machine stitched on. If you want a traditional, well-made bowler made out of fur felt that looks good without breaking the bank, just buy a vintage one. Cool video nonetheless.
cheap hats, first high quality hats are not made from wool, they are still made with Beaver, or Beaver/ Rabbit blend as the cost go's down the percentage of Beaver go's down, wool is the least expensive. I have been a hat collector for over 30 years and I can assure you none of my hats have wool or hot glued anything. still thanks for the video.
I know that these hats are probably just for costumes and stuff but for the love of God if you want a long lasting hat do not buy one that is held together by glue

It's actually more simple that it seems, I have done myself a "squared bowler hat", that I call a half top bowler, all it required was a hat stamp that I made out of sealing spray, hot water and a iron

Very cool! Always wondered how they did it... I will never understand why women see a fashion trend in wearing men's clothes. After all, the bowler is known as the "Common man's hat."
Odd that such a fancy hat would be finished with hot glue
was thinking the same.
Montana Goss These are cheap examples, not traditional hats!
Tabourba How high were you when you wrote that comment?
These are actually really cheap, low quality hats. High quality hats are made from fur felt not wool and definitely don't have any hot glue.
uiiiiop300 fur felt these days, but back when it was possible a fine silk
That is really true🧐
But that is a different style hat that you might normally see or make
Or you have a different culture
captain0ldy0da it was wool with a silk outline
This is so satisfying to watch for some reason
Glue, glue, glue, this is why clothes aren't what they used to be.

Bowler hats are my favorite hats
Never use hot glue AHH stop!
Only the highest class hats are made with hot glue
And toilet roll cardboard.
Simply ridiculous finishing the ribbon with hot glue....
Funny, i was thinking the same. Hot glue??
I don't think hot glue can last long in rainy day...
I think not ...
Tabourba If glue becomes wet, it tends to decompose its structure- especially hot glue since its so cheap in quality. Make a school project!
It’s a crime! I hand sew of course!!!
What's a 'silk satin blend'? Satin is a weave and it is made of silk then it's silk satin.

This right here
Without expensive machinery, how would I go about upturning the brim of a hat just like that of a traditional top hat?
Wheatley Insertlastnamehere hats that are old say 1800s you can't crease the edge of the brim if it's beaver it's not possible
Wheatley Insertlastnamehere just use a clothes iron. There are easily found instructions online for how to DIY a felt hat from scratch.
Steam can be used on felt but a old top hat is pretty much set and can't be bent unless you wish to Crack the hat

Great video. Very interesting and informative. Thanks!
where would i get information on buying equipment for making hats?
Ahh yes, the highly skilled application of hot glue to Chinese import bows.
Many cheaper production shortcuts from the originals
I like hats, for example, the hats from Texas, Bolivia and Panama.
All I could think of during this whole video was of the episode Miraculous: Mr. Pigeon
Higher quality hats are sewed not glued.
Wow awesome!!
where i can get that mold for top hat and bowler hat in indonesia?
How can we buy top hat

Lock & co,christys, bates and many english hatters still make it the original way
