I LOVE IT!!! You look fabulous in that bowler as I knew you would! Thank you for accepting my challenge. I loved our collaboration. Well done, Mate! Now, you truly are THE Chap!
As an American, I proudly own and wear my Bowler ! I was in London in 2017 and 2019 respectively and dressed smartly with my Bowler. I received positive compliments in my interactions with people.
That's why I got myself a vintage bowler hat back in 2018, I got it to help fight my own depression, & to raise my self esteem, & it helped me to love myself again... after the initial thoughts of "people are going to laugh at me etc", i figured "well, people walk around with facial tattoos & pink hair" , so I braved my self prejudice, & word it every day... I got nothing but compliments on my walks, & down the town, especially from other men, some would ask me about it, & i would tell them my story, & I told them that I was taking my hat for a walk.... & everyone thinks that it's a great idea... I feel ten feet tall, I no longer stare at the ground when I walk, nor do I bury my head in a mobile phone, so I also notice a lot more... hence the "Bowler Hat Song" is all true in it's words...... & it has certainly saved me. (also hence the choice for my avatar)
That is an amazing story of the power of positive dressing and how it can assist in other areas of your life. I also find that wearing a bowler can positively impact my mood and how I carry myself. It offer an injection of confidence and courage. I wish you all the very. best with your continued life journey - I hope your bowler will continue to offer you strength and confidence in every day situations.

Its kind of quirky and I can wear it casually and also formally and it is inspiring a new piece of choreography I am doing. I love it...oh and I also bought one with a wider brim...a bit of an Annie Hall look....its picked up my spirits big time....all reading this....enjoy!!!@@TheChapsGuide
I wish the Bowler hat and suit combo would make a resurgence in British society. It’s so iconic and such a bold statement of confidence which is what the country really needs to display right now.
As much as I like most of the advice on this channel, bowler hats are seen as clownish and an absurdity. I am 56, I have never seen anyone wear one unless at a funeral, or fancy dress. If I saw a person wearing one today I'd think he was either mentally ill, had just " quantum leapt " from 1960 or was on his way to a clowns convention.
I'm glad you're enjoying the hat. My grandmother's grandfather was a grocer & always wore a bowler hat. I've heard he was also a well known freemason. We still have his bowler hat and silver-tipped walking stick, both well over 100 years old. It's damaged but as you say it's remarkably robust!
On you that hat looks absolutely superb. The bowler is definitely a hat that should never have gone out of fashion. I have an original Lock & Co. (it fits) bowler amongst other bowlers in my collection. The last time I had the opportunity to wear it was when I chauffeured some good friends in a vintage Rolls. Cheers
As a kid of the sixties, I was a great fan of the Avengers. I was enamored with John Steed and his dress style. I watch The Avengers as much as possible because of him.
I own a Bowler hat and I like wearing it on special occasions, such as the Christmas Holy Mass, for example, or new year's eve. Although it of course draws attention, I apply the famous rule: wear it and forget it!
A great finish to a very smart look. I have only worn a Bowler in the movies/TV. I was an extra on the TV series" The Murdoch Mysteries." It takes place in the late 1890s and early 1900s during the age of invention.
You certainly cut a dash wearing the bowler. I'm quite surprised by how normal and appropriate it looks on you while on your walk. I can remember often seeing men wearing bowlers on their commute as a young man in the City of London. I do hope that it makes a revival. A most enjoyable episode Ash, thank you.
Thanks you sir. I was surprised at the wearability of the Bowler myself. Whilst you feel it is a highly formal item, it len ds itself well to daily use. I think I'll get my money of of this purchase many times over!
Very well said sir. Young gentlemen in the area of the US that is referred to as "The South" have declined in their standards of personal grooming and fashion, many wearing torn sleeveless grease shirts with oversized bluejeans and an ugly baseball cap. I was going in that direction but I do not wish to be associated with the kinds of boisterous behavior they engage in. Perhaps a revival of well dressed gentlemen should make a comeback here.
I picked up a brown bowler a week ago to match my vintage sweater vest. Still plucking up the courage to wear it out 😂 Fair play. You’re looking dapper, indeed.
You look great! And I love your interest in history. Fun! I have never seen a bowler hat worn in the US. In the 20th Century, the common hat was the fedora. Early in the 20th Century, the boater (flat straw hat) was common in the summer. Except for the popularity in the West in the 19th Century, the bowler is not seen.
Love the look of the bowler hat and it looks very distinguished on you. I wear the every now and then in Florida during the colder months. I also love the toughness of the hat, takes a beating and still looks good.
My bowler hat cost more than £17.99, even an unknown number of years ago, and I still wear it occasionally; perhaps I will wear it more often after watching this. It is not my oldest hat; that is a tweed trilby that I bought from Dunn & Co in Eastbourne in the late 70s, and that I still wear quite frequently. I know when I bought it because I remember where I was living at the time, and we were only there from 1977 to 1980. Another favourite hat is a rolling panama, that is not quite as old as the trilby, but has been around long enough to acquire a distinctive shape that I rather like. When I was young, I rejected hat wearing except in bad weather, but after my father died in 1970, I decided I would try to follow his example, although it took some time for it to become a habit. My father never left the house without collar and tie, and smart trilby, although from photos taken before the war, I knew that he had worn a variety of hats when he was younger. The only outdoor photo I have of his father, who died in 1926, shows him wearing a homburg, so I assume that was his hat of choice after the first world war. I was a collector of hats at one time, but most of them went to charity shops during our several 'down-sizing' exercises, but I kept the bowler and a fur felt top hat for sentimental reasons, and as symbols of the eccentricity that I have cultivated since I learned that I am autistic. After spending most of my life trying and failing to be 'normal', I decided that I would celebrate being different.
I forgot to mention what I have done to my bowler. Having heard that they were originally designed as hard hats, I tested mine and found the the crown could be depressed fairly easily, so I removed the lining, and treated the inside with several coats of fabric stiffener. I would still not want to try standing on it, but it is considerably more robust than it was, and the appearance remains unchanged.
I wore a bowler, as a woman. The gentleman opened the door for me and gave me a big smile. I saw a man dressed in one at a grocery store, he was dressed in a long coat. I couldn't keep my eyes off of him.
Nice hat, and an exceptional fit, which is half the battle when it comes to hats. The bowler and raincoat look down in your neck of the woods will no doubt have some concluding you must be a member of the local hunt.
Ash today I finally placed my order for the Bowler by Hebert Johnson/ swaine London in the guard weight in rabbit fur felt I do feel this is the only bowler in my collection that I can say a true original I shall make a review video in due time and upload it to my UA-cam channel
I recently got into a clothes shop and saw this type of hat, and o boy! I fell in love with it and I bought it. I didn't even know it's name nor what it stands for but here I am, I know what I bought now. Thanks for the explanations
Been wearing a Bowler with a suit, collar and tie myself for about 10 years now, having gravitated towards rocking the 'Max Normal' look from the pages of 2000 A.D. The present age we live in does appear to be one where what was once considered "dressing rebelliously" has become the new formal dress code that everyone "must" conform to, while what was once considered formal and conformist has become the new "punk".
I have a vintage Borsalino Bowler from the 1900s and while I love it I find the the current bowler hat to have brims which are too narrow for my personal liking especially with my protruding ears. While I have not gotten compliments for my hats since being Hong Kong classic hats aren't really worn by men. The only time I got complimented by a stranger was yesterday with my vintage straw boater hat. But I do get people looking at me with the way I dress up when I am outside. I do notice people talking behind my back but really thats about it. The only hat I still haven't gotten the confidence to wear is my vintage silk top hat.
@@TheChapsGuide True! But I find it easier to wear a top hat especially with a group of people also dressed up in morning suits and top hats. Its just that I am the only person and it feels awkward without others also wearing a top hat and morning suit.
Good afternoon from America. I just rediscovered your channel and look forward to learning as much as I can from you. As someone living and working in Silicon Valley (high tech) in California, I find myself in one of the most casual dress environments in the world. That being said I am looking to you for advice and inspiration to step up my fashion sense. All the best!
Thanks for a super video. Hats in general do seem to be making a little comeback and I for one wouldn't attend a formal function without a hat on. I've just recently purchased a nice quality Bowler and can't wait to show it off!
Just stumbled on your channel via the whims of the youtube algorithm. The bowler looks great on you. They're a wonderfully stylish addition to any man's wardrobe that can "pull it off". They're great for business and casual occasions. I've been rocking a bowler for years and get lots of compliments. It's coincidence you mention a flatcap, as I've got a newsboy on order to give it a go for the first time. I hope it works out for me as well as the bowler has for you. Great video. Got yourself a new subscriber. Cheers from Oklahoma, USA.
Good on you for taking up a bowler, it suits you most definitely. I like them, like seeing them and I like Mr. Bowler's relative the Homburg for its broader brim. Isn't it wonderful though, that a man may pick up a classic item and wear it with grace and confidence, understanding and individuality, gifts which such a thing affords, touch stones of custom and tradition. Clothing maketh the man, a hat his crown.
Funny! Big pretty convinced me to purchase a bowler after discovering his and your channel, I love it! Can’t wait to wear it out, although it’s to warm right now! It’s 90 F in Ohio
When I started work in the City of London in 1986 there were still 2-3 City gents getting off my train at Liverpool Street. By 1990, there were none, I have purchased a Lock & Co bowler and will wear it to London for meetings post pandemic. I hope the style comes back.
@@TheChapsGuide Thank you sir, I am having a 're-conforming' to make it fit in their emporium next week now the shop has reopened. Fabulous UA-cam channel by the way.
I so want to have and wear a bowler hat. I loved the New Avengers when I was a kid and my logo is a silhouette of the main character, John Steed, played by the late, great Patrick McGee, featured here. Brilliant video, many thanks. I’ve also subscribed to Big Pretty Man Channel 👍🏼
I bought my bowler many years ago in response to Mr. John Steed of The Avengers tv fame wearing one. I live where ball caps are the norm and I normally wear fedoras and flat caps, so when I wear the bowler, it gets attention. Great review!
The bowler hat has a great history: at its time it represented 'the modern science' of an equestrian hat shape that could withstand and occasional branch. I have a Christie's Hunting Bowler that is lacquered for strenth and has string down in back to colar when ducking is not sufficient....i think the are wonderful and yes i ride to hounds....
I bought a grey bowler hat recently, because of lockdown here i have only worn it for 1 day, the amount of compliments and requests for photos was brilliant, since then i bought a homburg as its a hat i see less frequently......both breat hats though, i have a variaty of hats and caps.....20 so far
That is an amazingly ‘good’ price for a Bowler- even better than my new flap cap. The Bowler suits you really good. I wonder will the Bowler make a comeback in the near future 👍🏻
Hello again I recently got a well fitting bowler guide along with my first suit! I found out that the Bowler or as half the people I know call it Derby really suits me! Love the hat and video
I wear various hats trilby's and bowler's. Although idiots like to make stupid comments. Also I should mention I'm not a business man at all just a chef
Hi Ash. I have today finally purchased a bowler hat. Actually a Town Coke by no other than Lock & Co. Bespoke therefore needed an adjustment. When I have seen the retail price of £445 a know this is my most praised and quality item in my wardrobe.
Living in the US the ubiquitous baseball cap seems to be the hat of choice. I have a small collection of flat caps, panamas, and fedoras and I do get looks when I am out and about. I have yet to get a bowler but I think that it is time. I really enjoyed the topic and the information that you presented today. You look as if you have been wearing a bowler for years, it's absolutely smashing on you, I hope I can pull it off as well.
A couple of years ago, pre Covid I was with a few friends at Twickers for the All Blacks Autumn International, (wearing my required Barbour International wax jacket). On our return into London we were walking past the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel when I spotted the Concierge at the front door. He was superbly kitted out in Brown but wearing a fantastic Brown Bowler which he allowed me to try on. A very generous offer by him and it fitted perfectly. Sadly, I am one of those rare people not suited to a Bowler, (my wife has some influence) but a very smart piece of headwear.
Thank you for this interesting video! I wear Fedoras and Panama hats regularly. I am now planning to buy a Homburg hat. Though I am still undecided if I will be wearing it with my normal suits. Greetings from Germany!
Please tell us...the brand/manufacturer name of the bowler hat. I love it...and for around $20...I would like very much to order one myself. Thank you for any response.
Excellent video, Sir. My bowler is not the real thing, but it does have heritage. It's the softer ladies' version that was traditionally worn by nurses and nannies. It's not quite as sharp as the one you're wearing, but it still looks pretty good. Also. you'd sometimes see bowlers sported by the 'Hippy' community. I know a chap who grows organic vegetables, and he hosts his market stall wearing a slightly battered, tall derby with a feather in the band. Teaming that with a nice waistcoat and a big set of grey whiskers, he really looks the business. I should also mention that in the photo you showed of Winston Churchill, he's not wearing a bowler. That's a square-crown hat, famously worn by Oddjob in the James Bond film Goldfinger. Almost everyone refers to that as Oddjob's weaponised bowler hat. but they're wrong.
For years I've been wearing bowlers regularly - at least once a week. I recently became involved in Cowboy Action Shooting where we dress in western garb and shoot targets. Proudly I wear a bowler as part of my costume.
@@TheChapsGuide Thank you! I'm from Provo, Utah, USA. This was the first video of yours that I've seen and you may have already mentioned where you're from. I'm interested to know because many of my ancestors come from England and Wales. I will be subscribing to your channel.
I’ve always been a fan of the Bowler hat. Currently, I own three of them. A dark gray Scalia, a black Scalia, and a black Stetson. People give me positive comments everyday I wear one.
The hat came from this store on Ebay: www.ebay.co.uk/str/sugarplum69?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=hkSSAPBcSCq&sssrc=3418065&ssuid=RSKdoKpGRNi&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Splendid video and it has set me upon a wonderful journey of discovery through your channel. Having pondered the purchase of a Bowler for a while, I took the plunge and found (what I assume to be) the same item on eBay for £17.99. I must say that for the price it does seem rather good quality. The fit, however, I find rather odd - hopefully not terminally so. It lodges quite tightly on the front and back of my head, while leaving large gaps at the side. When I press the side of the hat in, it seems to sort itself out, leading me to surmise that a hat-stretcher might be in order to encourage a more head-friendly shape. Not sure if other measures such as steam might be required too. Any advice would be gratefully received.
May I ask where you bought your Bowler/Derby. I've bought one, which I actually quite like but it's got a very Victorian higher crown rather than the more modern look. So I thought I would buy another that looks a bit " a la mode" so to speak. 2 bowlers ..a bit ott I know! Cheers for any help
I purchased my bowler from ebay for a mere £17 new. There are many retailers selling such items at rock-bottom prices. I am very happy with mine, a bargain!
It's up to you and other like minded individuals to make it a "thing". A friend sent me a photo of a modern take on the Homburg. It looked ridiculous, the originals looked so much better. Same goes for the bowler. Don't let perceived peer pressure effect your style. Wear the bowler. Cheers
@@ritchieclarke6488 It is an individual choice and warrants respect. Looking at your avatar pic I would disagree. I think, at a minimum, you could definitely make a traditional flat cap work. Walker and Hawkes makes an outstanding Harris Tweed Oakmoor cap that I think would be perfect. Just a recommendation. Cheers
@@steveconquest6684 I do actually wear a flat cap. But I am on the look out for a new one so really happy you have recommended one. I’ll have a look this afternoon.
@@steveconquest6684 got one on order thanks Steve! I’ve decided I’m going to look into finding a bowler and maybe a fedora if I can find one I like. Then slowly phase it into the wardrobe. Maybe a nice Panama for my holidays.
Historically the bowler hat had something of a negative connotation here in the US: during the late 19th century many city gangs would wear them. Due to the nature of its construction, the bowler afforded some armor to the head when they would get into brawls.

Thanks for a super video. Hats in general do seem to be making a little comeback and I for one wouldn't attend a formal function without a hat on. I've just recently purchased a nice quality Bowler and can't wait to show it off!
Well said!
Welcome to oiur little club sir.
The damn things are addictive!!
When I started work in the City of London in 1986 there were still 2-3 City gents getting off my train at Liverpool Street. By 1990, there were none, I have purchased a Lock & Co bowler and will wear it to London for meetings post pandemic. I hope the style comes back.
I think that the bowler does indeed have a place in society. It just looks so damn good. Congrats on the Lock & Co hat - the king of bowlers!
Forgot to say. I already have the cane-handled (from Classic Canes) umbrella standing by!
I bought my bowler many years ago in response to Mr. John Steed of The Avengers tv fame wearing one. I live where ball caps are the norm and I normally wear fedoras and flat caps, so when I wear the bowler, it gets attention. Great review!
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video!!!
Rockin' that Bowler!
looking great ash, i think the demise of the bowler started with chaplin but the demise of the toothbrush mustache was that other chap
Indeed. Anyone sporting 'that' moustache these days would have to be hard as nails, or profoundly unwell between the years.
Honestly it looks great on you.
A Bowler is the true hat of a gentleman!
I first became a bowler hat man at the tender age of 16 watching John steed and odd job.
Greetings from the other side of the Atlantic!
I bought a grey bowler hat recently, because of lockdown here i have only worn it for 1 day, the amount of compliments and requests for photos was brilliant, since then i bought a homburg as its a hat i see less frequently......both breat hats though, i have a variaty of hats and caps.....20 so far
A good hat is hard to beat - thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Love all your videos
That is an amazingly ‘good’ price for a Bowler- even better than my new flap cap.
The Bowler suits you really good.
I wonder will the Bowler make a comeback in the near future 👍🏻
It should - it is certainly an overlooked style icon
A fine purchase indeed and one that will no doubt serve you very well over many, many years. Congratulations and I hope you enjoy it very much!!
Confidence is all it takes I think - good luck!
Bowlers are bouncing back into popularity
The man at 08:20 was the Sundance Kid. Butch Cassidy is at 08:25. Photo taken in Ft, Worth, Texas circa 1900.
The hat is perfect for you , I think you have just found a new best friend
I agree - not a summer hat, but something to welcome back into my wardrobe in the autumn.
At least you offer inspirational content
LOVED YOUR VIDEO SIR!
Glad to hear that
This hat looks awesome on you sir
Thank you kindly
The Bowler hat was very popular in the old west, photo of Butch Cassidy wearing one.
My wife says a flat cap would accentuate my slender face/head. What would your recommendation be for a fashionable hat for me this winter?
I opt for the Trilby in the winter, warm, weather resistant and understated.
Strange as it sounds, but wearing the bowler has become a little addictive. It really makes the wearer feel special.
get a bowler for your wife too. it may surprise you both.
Thank you for this interesting video! I wear Fedoras and Panama hats regularly. I am now planning to buy a Homburg hat. Though I am still undecided if I will be wearing it with my normal suits. Greetings from Germany!
Historical Emporium has several Bowler hats
Please tell us...the brand/manufacturer name of the bowler hat. I love it...and for around $20...I would like very much to order one myself. Thank you for any response.
I purchased it from ebay - there are many bowler hats available for that price - take a look and see what takes your eye!
I shall be a bowler man from this point on. I feel like I have made a new friend.
@@TheChapsGuide Thank you! I'm from Provo, Utah, USA. This was the first video of yours that I've seen and you may have already mentioned where you're from. I'm interested to know because many of my ancestors come from England and Wales. I will be subscribing to your channel.
I was born in Wales and have lived in England for the last 15-years. Hope you enjoy my video.
@@TheChapsGuide Thanks. I'm looking forward to more videos.
It's a very dapper look.
In Germany it's called Melone (melon hat).
I’ve always been a fan of the Bowler hat. Currently, I own three of them. A dark gray Scalia, a black Scalia, and a black Stetson. People give me positive comments everyday I wear one.
I have certainly had my eyes opened to this, most classic of hats. Great choices sir.
I really want a bowler hat
Update: I bought myself a bowler hat a few weeks ago from an antique warehouse. Wear it now and again.
Great !!
Style>fad/fashion
You look awesome friend
😊 thank you
Please share the link of the seller where you bought that bowler and the brand maker. :)
The hat came from this store on Ebay: www.ebay.co.uk/str/sugarplum69?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=hkSSAPBcSCq&sssrc=3418065&ssuid=RSKdoKpGRNi&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Where you can still see them is Northern Ireland: roundabout the 12th of July the Bowler Hat is being worn by Ulster Loyalists during their parades.
Really look like a proper City banker.
Great video! Now just wait until Nicholas Tibor Engel challenges you to wear a bicorne!!!
Mine fitted rather well straight from the box - good luck with yours.
@@TheChapsGuide spot on thank you. Loving your videos by the way. Even watched quite a few several times. Very very helpful
Great video,, Great hat,, I enjoy mine very much,,wish the same for you!!!
It looks good on you .where can I get ? I want to own for myself
It was an ebay special - there are many brands available and all retailing for a similar price (£18) - good luck.
That had really looked great on Patrick Macnee. Funny that 007 never wore it at all.
Where did you get your 17 pound bowler from? which ebayer? It's not a bad looking hat.
Purchased a few years ago, but I see there are still examples on there for about £20. It is actually a good hat for that price.
You seem to have missed quintessential British villain Terry-Thomas in your famous Bowler wearers list. ;)
I actually had an image of him wearing one, but it didn't fit with the narrative in the end. He was most certainly a bowler legend.
I'm searching for a bowler hat but I will probably only use it in November.
Love this hat
How can I buy it, ?

I wish a bowler hat in British society was still a thing, I would love to be wearing a bowler on a regular basis.
It's up to you and other like minded individuals to make it a "thing". A friend sent me a photo of a modern take on the Homburg. It looked ridiculous, the originals looked so much better. Same goes for the bowler. Don't let perceived peer pressure effect your style. Wear the bowler. Cheers
@@steveconquest6684 I do agree. Sadly hats in general don’t suit me. Or at least I don’t think so. Which really puts me off investing.
I can see how that would be beneficial in a street fight - thanks for sharing.
You were certainly well attired prior to donning the bowler, but once on, you looked 10 times the gentleman.
