  • Robby Krieger's excellent memoir, 'Set the Night on Fire' is a must-read for any self-respecting Doors aficionado. One chapter in particular caught my attention, where Krieger talks about the Oliver Stone film, 'The Doors' and not only all the things he likes about it, but all the times the film invented things to be more exciting and push the narrative along. I found the list quite interesting, so have set it to the relevant footage from the film here.

Number 10: on the Ed Sullivan show, Jim did not get up close to the camera and loudly emphasize the word "higher" when singing "Light My Fire" after he was asked to not say the word on Network TV. He sang it as normal.

He simply forgot it. Oliver Stone had this idea of who Jim was and really baffled the people who really knew Morrison by selling some of that.

Nah they'd ruin it. Probably put in a bunch of made up scenes where he gets drunk and makes disparaging remarks about gays and minorities. Hollywood has already damaged Morisson's image enough.

Yes, the movie is not accurate at all. I still enjoy it as a work of fiction. It's Oliver Stone's idea of a place in time when The Doors were one of the biggest bands on the planet. Jim got most of the attention, of course. His talent, looks and early demise made him a legend, and their music is still regarded as some of the best rock ever made.
The movie is a very loose examination of their meteoric rise to fame, their troubles, and the results of it all.
When No One Here Gets Out Alive came out, it reignited interest in the band, and like the movie, it painted Jim as a much nastier person than he actually was, according to his bandmates.
Ray (RIP), John and Robbie all mentioned how bright, generous and funny he was, and we don't really see those sides of this complicated, troubled man.
Like Robbie points out, there is no one way to look at The Doors. The good news is that we still have the music, and it's as compelling today as it was when it was new.
They made 6 studio albums with Jim, and they're all worth listening to. There's a lot of live material out there that proves that when they were good, they were very good.
Listen to the music. Read the poems. That's where you'll find Jim. There is nothing like The Doors, and there never will be. Enjoy it while you still can.

They really made Jim out to be an ass. Kind of a shame if he was a decent person. I'm sure it doesn't end there as well. This movie is probably 50% fiction. Or more.

The doors movie is intresting in that it's a movie about a man with a drinking problem that feels like it was being told by a drunk, basically recounting a story with no respect to what it actually was but how the narrator feels about it and what they remember in that moment. It's vaguely funny if you don't consider it disrespectful to the dead

I friggin LOVE this film. I love every minutes of it. I don't care how true or not true. I'm sure Andy Warhol never gave Jim a golden phone but it doesn't matter. It's the past, it can't hurt anyone. It's a hell of a ride. Just a bummer that Jim went so damn early. Tho, who knows how awful he would have become had he stuck around....

There's an old saying - never let facts get in the way of a good story. And it's something I subscribe to - at least, a little. The historian in me rebels against it, though. My fear when it comes to biopics is much as I said in the video; the more time that goes by, the more people will believe these things actually happened, when they didn't. And when it comes to things like Stone setting a concert in a city and in a year where they never actually played that city, I think... why? There's no narrative reason that it had to be that city, in that year... why not set it in a city they played that year? Stuff like that is weird.

Just aside from many things that didn't happen in reality, Oliver Stone insisted on bringing out Jim's dark and destructive side in the film. It is true that Morrison engaged in self-destructive behavior, usually when he was drinking. But he was a much better person and artist in terms of talent, generosity and intelligence than Stone shows. Jim is portrayed as a psychopathic alcoholic... People who knew him well know that the character portrayed in the film is not the real Jim Morrison... just a small part of who he was.

Film makers often deliberately collate and/or transpose incidents to get more into the relatively short time of a movie and claim a narrative. Jim went to Agnes Varda's daughter birthday party in Paris and collapsed drunk on the table. Stone took this into the Doors setting rather than have to explain Jim's relationship with Varda which would have needed the film to be three hours. It's artistic licence - Stone never claimed to make a documentary.

    • @HaveYouSeen
      @HaveYouSeen  Рік тому +5

Correct, he didn't. However, as I made the point in the video, as the decades go by, and people increasingly believe what happened in a biopic 'actually happened', it's good to know what's reality and what isn't. Robby correcting the record is excellent, particularly when it comes to stuff like The Doors not playing San Francisco in 1968 at all, so why Stone invents a city and year when it could have been an actual city they played in 1968, is a strange decision. Harder to justify with 'artistic license' when there were real options to use for that one.

Oliver Stone played Jim as himself in the movie but he found a nice avatar in Mr Kilmer. In truth it gave our generation an image of rock'n'roll and there might not have been the 90s without it. I thought Patricia Keneally aborted JM's child and he wrote Maggie Magill about it.
