I don’t paint, I have zero intention of taking up painting but I absolutely love watching these videos in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. Sometimes you just have to sit back and admire talent.
Jason Bird HAHAHAH couldnt agree and relate more, i once tried to learn how to draw but it didnt go well so now i just watch other people master the art
You didn’t need to expose me like that
What he said! Thanks for your wonderful channel/artwork. Cheers from Berlin!
This is a recurring theme in UA-cam comments, people having trouble sleeping. A hazard of modern life.
slaznum1 I guess people have always had trouble sleeping. We just have so much more to do now. I couldn’t imagine having trouble sleeping two hundred years ago. Eating porridge in the dark by candle light! 😂
This man is my new bob ross.
I freaking love these videos.
Pls don't compare a legend to a professional 😔😔😔
Bob Ross didn't painted pollutive America.Peak demand, when more pollutive power stations are activated, could be cut by 4 per cent
@@glowup1104 shut the fuck UP
@@glowup1104 He is only a legend because he is dead.
@@vitorklock2118 So if you die you can be a legend too?
I don't think so...
your painting looks better than the actual street
Yeah! I think that's one of the things I love about his paintings
yes, i have to say this too.
I know. If it was me I'll never pick up such a "boring" looking street and he automatically makes it look 100 times more interesting
That's why I love paintings.
That's the magic of art
not only was the video great, but the ending machine with the credits was out of this world
+bakr haltam Thanks! That's homemade out of wood, brass, epoxy and sculpting compound. The buttons operate by crank-driven cam action.
@@JamesGurney what is one of them called?
I love these videos so much. I want to plein air with James Gurney!
Wow, even you are here.
Sinix Design o
i want to plein air with both of you guys. >//< (or just like creepily watch yall shh)
get off your butt and get plein airing smh sinix
Saaame, I made a rig like his to do it on my own. I fell in love with his setup even though I know the equipment wont make me better, but it might make it a little extra fun.
It did
I like how your brush strokes look uncertain in the beginning. But, when the work is done, it's masterly to behold. I really admire your work.
i'm a japanese, your painting makes me lovely. Your painting is amazing!!
@stan sorensen lol
A wholesome stuff we got here. Sure, you are lovely
Nice. I love the oldschool traditional japanese waterpaintings.
lol 😂 “It’s always something.” How true! Every plein air painting has a story beyond the painting. That, makes the experience and expression endearing.
During my elementary days i really like to draw almost everything but i lost that skill during highschool until now im 32 yrs old and after I've watched this video i am so interested to draw and paint again. And can i learn so much from you sir thanks a lot.
So 3 years on, did you ever learn again?
This is like Bobb Ross but on location. I love watching your vids :)
I am now positive that you are the Bob Ross of watercolor.
You hit all the criteria- 1. You’ve got a satisfying voice
2. You videos aren’t abrasive
3. Talent, you’ve got lots of that.
4. Nice antidotes that keep you entertained.
5. Probably the most important, your authentic.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art.
It’s so therapeutic to watch this guy paint.
When I'm stressed I watch alla of your videos over and over again it's relaxing makes me optimistic about life ❤🎉 stay blessed
Your paintings made me more relaxed and calm to watch you paint.
Watching you paint is such a treat.
Kyle T Webster Indeed it is
Who could dislike this? It is humble and amazing work!
Mad Architect whenever I see videos like these “disliked” it only reminds me; That the world truly has haters. You’re correct it is humbling and a amazing. I just don’t understand people that can’t see that for what it is. 🤷🏽♂️
I’m pretty sure the hate comes from within tho. They don’t know any better.

Oh man i really like painting but i suck.. your paintings are amazing!
Keep doing it. You'll improve big time!
Just follow his steps in the video, Pretty carefully.
He's been painting for decades, of course he's good. Everyone sucks in the beginning, just keep practicing :>.

“It’s always something” after the sirens lmao this dude is amazing
Super cool relaxed and simple that is how you make it look. One of the most no nonsense video tutorials in the whole web
Just my kind of thing. Full of atmosphere and detail but when you examine the detail it's not there it's in your head. Brilliant
I don’t know who could possibly give a thumbs down.. I bet u people are the ones who do not even know what art is.. this is brilliant work..
very nice rendering, just enough detail and nice fade- a- way on the right. great subject, reminds me of my youth in the 1950's in waterbury , same buildings. old cigar store, woolworths, etc.
water colors give a very nice texture and shape , so nice and heart touching
James..your style is amaziing..I really enjoy watching you paint...its soothing to my soul...and satisfying to my eyes...thank you for posting
From Parkview in Johannesburg to Parkview in Indiana.... thanks for another great demo!
I love the way you paint. I am learning from you. I don't paint in what you are doing but I can still learn.
All of your videos are great, but this one was particularly interesting to me because you showed some of how you constructed the building. Your paintings always look far better than the real thing!
The idea captured in the first 60seconds is vital. Frame the idea and execute it. Always inspiring to watch you paint.
Fantastic !
oh wow, that went from being super loose to a beautiful finished piece by the end so quickly!! The lines with the fountain pen really made a huge difference, especially next to the dark shadows on the brightly-lit building, it looks so three-dimensional while keeping that impressionist look to it. I enjoy watching what you choose to emphasize or leave out in a painting.
I'm so excited to have found this channel, I could watch these all day
I'm a long time disciple of James' work and website. I'm laying in the hosp. watching these.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery so you can get back out there and paint.
Stumbled upon your videos today and I'm so glad I did! Absolutely love your techniques and teaching!
You are the only artist on youtube that knows how to paint correctly and academically in watercolour. You're amazing !
Beautiful work, I also love the dry brush technique on the wall (:
James I have watched you paint for almost 7 years now and you are an inspiration. I was an advertising storyboard artist using mostly coloured markers but your loose style and treatment of shadows and hues and tones is a real help. Detailing later is a key lesson for me and a lot of fun.
Amazing work Mr. GURNEY
You are really turning the mundane into something magical through your painting.
My favorite part of the paintings is the shadows and reflected light. Thank you for posting!
Loved the fire truck plot twist.
I love this guy.
I dont even paint but his paintings are so serene.
Your schetch book are like a photo album. I bet they bring back some fun memories. I love how they are a snap shot in time. Thanks for sharing and narrating not just playing music.
So nice!
I have been in love with Pentalic Sketchbooks for so long.
James ! Your art is Wonderfull and full of life. Thank you so much, merci beaucoup from France. Vivien
Well done! Love the mixture of those techniques!
this is really good! Since I want to start using watercolors your tips are very helpful ( plus I can learn english a bit c:)
Hey lol its weird to see someone i watch here 4 years ago with 10 likes in their comment
@@risingiguana5408 I don’t even remember making this comment haha
I am enjoying your paintings very much. I located your bridge and buildings with Google map street view. This building and bridge still looks the same. Keep your inspiring artwork coming. Loving what you do and how you present it... You should be offered your own PBS show... I would tune in..
i love how you capture each site.. and the colors..
You always seem to see more in a subject than most people would, that’s the true artists eye. You’re a great watercolorist!
That's really fantastic. Thank you very much for allowing watching you paint. A real artist makes the difficult job looking so easy.
Wow! The detailing is excellent!
unbelievable !!! amazing watercolor technique!!!
Great little video James, really enjoyed watching it and thank you for taking the time and effort to share these with us - very much appreciated.
Good stuff. Liked the fountain pen trick to get the small details in quickly.
I found you thanks to Steve Mitchell and I love your work. I have never painted buildings mainly because I find the angles difficult but I might just pluck up the courage to give it a go once I have done a bit more plein air somewhere quieter where no-one can see! The fire engine made me laugh, you're right there is always something when you paint outdoors!!
I really appreciated James Gurney revealing that he has trouble accurately capturing foreshortening. I'm not a veteran to drawing and I struggle to accurately capture what I'm looking at. I thought my difficulties would go away with practice, but if James still has trouble, I understand that the struggle is something even seasoned artists deal with. BTW, thanks so much for showing how you measure what you're looking at.
So well documented and informative! Thank you for sharing.
Always fabulous videos and paintings! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. Fun to watch and learn!
It's simple, but awesome. Like it
Wonderful. Magical!
Loved this James! You are an amazing fountain of inspiration!
you are amazing.
love your work.
thanks for sharing with us.
How lovely!!! Thanks for sharing - Great talent!
Hi, James, I love your works. Thanks for sharing. Your works are inspiring. God bless you.
PERFECT! Using the mixed media techniques for this type of field sketching is refreshing. The key to this all is your drawing. Proportions, scale and what to leave in and what to take out.
You’re helping me brush up before I go traveling. My favorite thing to do when traveling is drawing and painting the cities and people :)
Just beautiful.
Out standing art work James Gurney
Thank you for sharing your paintings. I really love the way you paint, and the content you choose to speak about while painting. No fluff and its easy to learn.
Really enjoy it. God bless you sir.
you make this look so easy!!!! enjoying your work and learning as I go
Loving art!!!
Thanks James! Great to watch!!
Very inspiring. I think I will try watercolor again. Thanks.
Thanks for making these videos with explanation of your process. It's as if I'm taking a class from a master except it's FREE.
I love watching your technique, which really seems to embrace washes and drawing with your brush. Great subject matter; miss those old buildings found in the cities and towns of the Midwest.
Thanks, Karen. I also love those grand old towns of the Midwest. Every chance I get, I like to get off the interstate and visit them.
James, your work is always excellent!
I love this art work. I have been trying to get into watercolors now. I am not a a fan of realism on watercolor because I feel it takes away the beauty of it. I like line and wash style, but I feel it can look like a cartoon. But this! This way you paint is awesome. I think I will apply it myself. Congratulations, you are extremely talented!
Thank you for sharing.
I do admire your work. Thank you for sharing with the world the amazing world of watercolors.
Magnificent!

That transition blew my mind. In a small way, but I am truly shocked by the accuracy.
I went over it frame by frame, and it IS amazing! ( , for back frame and . for forward frame).
What an opportunity it would be to flip through your sketchbooks to admire and study your artwork. It would kind of be like walking through a museum.
I've been watching your chann, You've taught me so much, thank you for sharing this with me and I do appreciate it..
Thanks, James, for such great information and sharing what you know unselfishly. Very inspiring!
Thank you for posting this video!! Great!
I have the watercolors and the fountain pens... Now, I just need the dedication! Thank you for providing me with an inspired video. Wonderful.
Thank you for this video! I learned so much, and I'm beyond excited to watch these videos from one of my childhood favorite artists!
Wonderful video! Goes perfectly with "Watercolor in the Wild" too! Thank you so much for sharing and keep it up!
Your work is relly amazing, I love your drawings and paintings
Such a fan keep posting! I'm going back to painting..thanks for sharing
Great picture. Thanks for sharing all the detail of how you approach this, especially how to do the initial sketch and work out the perspective lines. Very useful indeed - I feel inspired!
It has been years since this video is uploaded. 2014, I was just a 8 -yo girl ;-;
I like your videos so much !!!
thank you for demystifying some Gurney magic!
Beautiful work!
I love the drawing light and contrast- thank you for sharing, you do such beautiful work!
I was so excited to find this video this morning, just when I thought I had watched them all!

Your videos are so inspiring for those of us that enjoy painting! The dry brush and the inclusion of the brown ink are great techniques!
