    Paul got me into vent in the 50s.I started with the Jerry doll with only a string in the back then upted to the one with the headstock with the moving eyes. Later I got a more professional one made,which I still have, but these days I just make them.Hope to perform again sometime in the future but I am a little rusty now.
    As to Paul, he was magnificent, and ahead of his time.

    without Paul Winchell, we'd not have the artificial heart. He had patented a control device that was used for the valves.

    Paul Winchell, was one of the best of the modern ventriloquists as well as in the history of the art form. Paul as an artist utilized his art as metaphor for man's God given gift of invention. Each of us in our own way understands the plurality of the self. As we did as children with our toys we learned as we grew to partition parts of our consciousness to create distances in our minds with which to build our castles and from these imagined sanctuaries to reflect upon our spiritual journey. Through his puppetry, with Jerry Mahoney, Paul Winchell brought humor to a staged speech act, a theatrical amusement. Ventriloquism, with its multiple 'personalities,'actually a form of self intervention, has a rich cultural history that denotes a 'complex logic' of its own. JFK said; "In life, there are but three things that are real...God, human folly and laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension and so we are left with the third." As an artist inventor Paul generated ideas and shared his phenomenon of illusion as a way to illuminate hope by way of fun and by igniting the smile factor in the hearts of others.

      Such an amazing performer!! I remember well Winchell Mahoney Time. I think I was "too cool" as a 6th grader to officially like the show. As an adult I can appreciate how seamless and inspired his presentations were.
      Did you know he invented the artificial heart? Yeah, he was a medical hypnotist, acupuncturist, and inventor in his spare time.

    • @inkyguy
      @inkyguy 4 роки тому

      P Heresy, he invented an artificial heart; it was never successfully used. I do not know what relationship, if any it had to the the Jarvick-7, which was the first one to be successfully implanted about 20 years later.

    Paul Winchell came up with different characters not just knucklehead Smith and Jerry Mahoney. Who remembers his characters "Mr. Tortilla" or Mr. Willuberry, who used to award prices and then cheat to win them back? or the adlibs like when you hear brakes loudly squealing and the driver shows up to speak before the big crash sound , he said: " I just couldn't wait until the car stopped!!!" lol

    Winchell had to be the best ventriloquist of all time. This bit is pretty "clean' but I've seen others (I think maybe off Ed Sullivan or another variety show) where he used Jerry to inject some of most suggestive, risque material allowed on TV in the 50s. The way he could use Jerry's eyes and head movements were amazing. I miss this kind of talent as it's all been plowed under by the most un-subtle, overtly crude junk. See Bob Newhart for a later example of humor that managed to be funny without being crude and degrading. This stuff is demoralizing our youth.

    Wow! That Winchell can control even the movements of the Jerry Mahoney dummy by limbs and head movements (aside from the mouth) while Edgar Bergen, the man who's talent on Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd outranked Winchell's, actually didn't often put movement on his dummies' limbs.

    I NEVER MISSED WINCHELL MAHONEY TIME WHEN I WAS A KID & WAS FOND TO MR. GOODY-GOODY WHO RESEMBLED LOUIE, A BOOKIE WHO OWNED THE BARAGIN CENTER; A LITTLE STORE NEXT TO THE McCOY'S MARKET. WINCHELL WAS BOTH BRILLIANT & TALENTED; A TRUE GENIUS, BUT HE COULD BE RATHER STRANGE ACCORDING TO SOME OF THE STORIES HIS DAUGHTER, APRIL, USED TO TELL WHEN SHE WAS ON KFI RADIO ON THE WEEKENDS DURING THE 1990s. ONE OF THE STORIES WAS QUITE BIZARRE. ANYWAY, PW WON A LAWSUIT AMOUNTING TO ABOUT $17 MILLION FOR THE DISTRUCTION OF HIS SHOW TAPES, BUT I THINK THE PERSON(S) BEHIND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO PRISON. A PIECE OF HUMANITY WAS DESTROYED FOR REVENGE AGAINST A TOTALLY INNOCENT MAN.
