Voices of the Void might be the best 'you have a job but spooky' I've ever played. You play as someone working at an observatory scanning and processing signals. Shitton of emergent gameplay too. It's basically a spooky immersive-sim.

Brendaniel's commentary on how the style of today's horror is a simulacrum of a simulacrum makes me think about how we've been stuck in an 80s nostalgia well past the point of a normal nostalgia cycle (the person who would've been a teenager during the 80s would now be close to retirement) and how there's actual writings about how people seem to be less capable of creating anything new because people increasingly find it hard to imagine a future and can only redesign the past under capitalism.

I’m nostalgic about Skyrim, but not on a modern system, not that the game has changed, it’s just mods and graphical updates take away what it was to me as a kid with Xbox 360 graphics

During the systemshock conversation I listen this thing about dishonored and it made me remember how I went to buy all of them after the last podcast and I found out how that game me me truly dizzy nowadays and had to refund it, I was very sad.

I believe that system shock is called an immsim because the sequel is one because the first game really is more of a metroidvania than anything else.

I'd be really excited if ya'll would ever get Kevin Miller or Dev Madan on the podcast, I loved the Sly Cooper games as a kid and still do as a 28 year old curmudgeon
Seeing Sly in Astro Bot definitely tickled that little nostalgia bone a bit but even if you removed all the references and such, it would still be a very solid game with how fun and lively it is
It felt way more like a Lego game than Funko Fusion ever did which it could've easily been if there were more corporate meddling involved
As for Horizon, it's the definition of a 6/10, nothing groundbreaking or anything but fine enough
The robot designs are genuinely a 10/10 they're all so good

Brendan did beat the Funko Thing Dog boss level on stream and I think lost a part of himself. You also can't complete the game unless you have all the cameo levels. Brendan found that out and turned off the game.

Also I feel as if we're seeing more 'Yellow Paint' because a lot of games become these huge open world experiences that weren't possible on consoles and PCs of the past underneath the pressure of the A³ game market. You guys have already talked about the enshittification of the working conditions and game business models themselves, and I think that ties in pretty neatly to the rise of open world predominancy in PvE experiences and yellow paint being slapped on to projects that didn't have the neat little in-game or lore-relevant markers for special/main areas and progression.

I Am Your Beast strikes me as being in the "time-attack shooter" subgenre, though leaning more towards the Neon White side of the spectrum than towards Anger Foot or [post void]. Meanwhile, Funko Fusion is giving me Hyenas flashbacks, in that it looks a little cheap but also really expensive.
In a way, one could argue that Astro World is sort of a spiritual successor to Ape Escape, which makes a lot of sense since Team Asobi is comprised of Japan Studio alumni.
As for nostalgia, I have a nostalgia for classical shooters, mainly due to Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Which is good, 'cause the Boomshoot Renaissance meant that I was eatin' GOOD around the late 2010s. Granted, I was still eating kinda good around the prelude, thanks to the Shadow Warrior reboot and Doom 2016, but the retro-revival kicked off (at least partially) by New Blood and DUSK certainly got me eating good when it came to games that echoed the sensibilities of the Build engine and early iD Tech engines.
Wait, Angry Demon did Apsulov: End of Gods?! Hell yeah, that game was tight.
As for System Shock Remake, I had a good old time with it (disclosure: I was a backer for it back in the day, so make of that what you will). It sort of did the Dead Space Remake thing, where it's kind of a 1.5 in that it embodies elements of both the original and the sequel. I started out with 2 back in the olden days, then dipped my toe into the original thanks to the Nightdive enhanced edition. Speaking of which, I kinda wish Mandy was here to give his two cents, but he was busy moving homes, voicing characters in Space Marine 2, and wondering where all the plundered spices went while he was in the UK.

The 7th gen nostalgia wave and the resurgence of ps3 and xbox 360 games at the time means people might start looking respectfully at 4th and 5th generation armored core games; 4 - For Answer, V - Verdict Day. And then start making grungy dystopian mech games that i want in my blood yesterday

One game I'm surprised wasn't brought up in the 'yellow paint' discussion was 'Still Wakes The Deep'. I feel like that game perfectly balances the problem of player attention. The game takes place on an Oil Rig out in the Scottish seas and the yellow paint is there throughout the game because in the real world, that is a industry safety tool for actual oil rig workers so their environment is as visually clear as possible. it also allows the developers to add that deeper detail to the game without sacrificing fidelity in the game's overall presentation.

For me personally, the tightrope balance with horror games is atmospher/aesthetic, narrative, and gameplay to justify the player going through your setting. I feel that is the formula to follow to make unique experiences. I hope to live up to it one day. Adored the podcast guys!

Regarding the bloated game production, I haven't played Hades 2 yet but Supergiant Games seem to be growing in size while you can still see it in the product (the voice-acting, polish, QA and coding of Hades compared to the humble, closet-produced Bastion).
With Witcher 3, I felt a bunch of padded content could have been dropped while enemy encounters could have been resolved with intimidation and self-preservation (in most violent conflict, one side will break and retreat because they don't want to die).

I don't know what I should be feeling when people vehemently defend the yellow paint, while also correctly acknowledging that games have been doing it better and for longer with things like lights and funneling techniques, in the same sentence. Yellow paint is lazy, get over it.

2:10:00 I would like to counter Julian's point that highly detailed games make it too difficult to direct the player's attention because VR games like Half-Life Alyx and Boneworks have absurdly detailed and interactive environments but are still able to guide the player on a clear path.

50:00 I think what they were going for with the collab levels in Astro Bot was you'd play through the best hit of their respective console generation.
    PS1: Ape Escape
PS2: God of War. But the Norse Saga is super hot now so you play as Dad Kratos.
    PS3: Uncharted
PSP: That singing game (forget the name)
    PS4: Horizon Zero Dawn
