  • This is the video presentation of the LTsER platform Ria de Aveiro.
On the northwest coast of Portugal, there is a wetland with more than 11,000 hectares of complex estuarine structure, with unique fauna and flora adapted to living in this of salt and fresh water duality.
This complex and dynamic place is as rich as it is fragile. Separated from the sea by a small piece of sand, the Ria de Aveiro, is threatened by climate change, and suffers from misuse, from invasion by industries and exotic species to over-exploitation.
The selection of this site as a LTER site contributes to preserve the biological richness within its socio-economic context, by monitoring the ecological characteristics of the Ria over the years.
