  • Hopefuls to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader are examining the reasons for the party's election defeat.
Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
Norwich MP Clive Lewis and Wigan's Lisa Nandy have both said they are considering running for the position of Labour leader.
Other potential contenders Keir Starmer and Emily Thornberry have so far declined to confirm their candidacy.
The contest could begin on 7 January following recommendations from the party's general secretary.
And Labour Party officials have suggested that Mr Corbyn's successor will be in place by the end of March.
Mr Corbyn announced he would step down as leader, after the party suffered its worst election result since 1935.
    James Clayton reports.
Emily Maitlis speaks to Labour MP Wes Streeting, former Labour MP Emma Dent Coad, who lost her Kensington in the general election and Labour peer Maurice Glasman.

The problem with Labour is that it doesn’t have the self-preservation that is entrenched in the Conservative Party. They choose the leaders they want, rather than the candidate the public wants. The Conservatives do the opposite. Blair has been the only exception to this rule. I think it’s time for Labour to realize that they are attempting to unite two parties, hard-left and soft-centre, under one umbrella and it simply is not working for the electorate. Moderate Labour supporters feel utterly abandoned by this party as it stands today.

    • @antonkarlsson7664
      @antonkarlsson7664 4 роки тому

@@judegrindvoll8467 It's indeed not rocket science. "Third way" Social Democracy was new in the 90ies (when Labour was elected). They still had the confidence of the working class to implement good reforms, and safeguard investments and the NHS.
However, that fascad was obliterated 2010, and since then, Social Democracy has grown instinct throughout the world. "Third way", Blairite, Social Democracy alienated their core base (all around Europe), and could not hold on to the middle class.
Next election, Conservatives will certainly have alienated all of the north and middle constituencies, just like Thatcher did. Only then will Labour have confidence again, and they will have to improve the conditions of the working class this time around, or meet a swift end.
As I said, if centrism was decired, more people would have flocked to the lib dems (like 2010). You can't explain that away.

@Dee Jay I work in the service industry and and yeah, a lot of the general public are idiots. not all of them. a lot of them are lovely and thoughtful but there are so many divs out there. in the run up to the election i had many conversations with people from various walks of life and had respectful conversations with them about the election. and honestly mate, political opinions aside, the level of ignorance that exists astounded me. whether it was on brexit, immigration, welfare, the effects of austerity. not many of them actually had a clue what they were talking about. they coudn't hold argument, they could only really regurgitate the little soundbites they hear/see in the media which shows how much they are easily swayed by the press. because they are thick. when you consider that over 80% of the media in this country is owned by the right wing it becomes clear which side controls the narative. though im not a huge fan of corbyn, i liked his policies and his constant fight against injustice but the way the media have slandered him and his party over the past few years with complete unsubstanciated nonsence is fucking discusting. made doubly worse when you consider all the awful things the tory government has done to people in this country over the past 9 years, and how much of a lying, cheating, racist fucking dickensian scumbag Boris Johnson is, which has been completely downplayed by the press.

Unless Tories are going to perform terribly in next 4/5 years there is no way Labour will win next GE. All the leadership candidates wont stand a chance against Boris. That man win every single battle he fought. Mayoral, Brexit, Tories internal dispute and GE. Labour need to find potential leader among youngster

Qualities required for strong leadership. Broad life experience, genuine intelligence, strength of character, empathy, wisdom - and many more, I shouldn't wonder. Who amongst this gruesome crowd could possibly claim to possess any of those attributes?

'You can't throw a manifesto out a few weeks after an election...' 1983. When did Labour next get elected? Oh yeah, 1997, after they actually did throw out that manifesto...
So next Labour govt in 2034 then?
