      Thornberry has contempt for people supporting England at football; when the very wealthy are at Cowes week for the Sailing competitions I hope she attends, and tells them not to support the English competitors. Then she can go to the Gatcombe Park horse jumping, and tell those posh lot not to support the English competitors. @darinmazzie3026 4 роки тому +13

    I've been Labour all my life, but in the last 2 General Elections I haven't voted Labour.
    My main issue was their stance on Brexit.
    At first they were going to honour the will of the people, then when they failed in the European Elections they realised they were always going to be behind Conservatives with that policy, so decided to change to a 2nd referendum policy, in the hope that would sway voters.
    However, most Leavers (myself included) know that politics is unpredictable and a 2nd referendum had a chance of swaying the other way and that could mean the end of Brexit.
    So most ardent Leave supporters wouldn't vote for the Lib Dems (which would mean revoking Article 50) and they wouldn't vote for Labour (which would mean there was a chance of revoking Article 50).
    The former Labour MP for Blyth Valley, Ronnie Campbell (who was retiring his seat anyway), always said that he would back the majority of his constituents' wishes by backing Brexit, and he said after Labour's defeat in Blyth Valley that if the Party doesn't listen to the people then they have to accept the consequences.
    Any MP who's constituents voted a Leave majority in 2016, but decided they know best and backed either revoking Article 50, or asking for a 2nd referendum should have expected to lose their seat in this election.

    • @SRPC21
      @SRPC21 2 роки тому

      Exactly, it was only defendable to campaign against Brexit once the Leave vote won if the particular constituencies opposed Brexit (i.e. in most of Scotland, I hate the SNP but they were right to fight against Brexit).

    • @oxfordfumble
      @oxfordfumble 2 роки тому

      “The people” aren’t always right, especially if they’ve been fed lies by the Tory press for decades, and by the Leave campaign.
      Already 2 years ago, the public mood was shifting on Brexit, and it has shifted further now, but we should persist and honour a non-binding referendum, whose results would have been invalidated if it was binding, due to irregularities in the leave campaign spend?
      Anyway, Brexit is done now, so we can leave that debate assess the performance of the Tories on its own merits… Let’s all catch up on whether it was wise to put them in power….

    Caroline Flint was born and grew up in Twickenham, Middlesex, close to the Thames. She graduated from the University of East Anglia. She is really a London suburban person. She is skilled enough to seem classless, and served as MP for a semi-industrial Labour area in South Yorkshire between Doncaster and Sheffield for 22 years. No wonder even Boris Johnson himself regretted that she has been voted out of Parliament. Unfortunately, even if she gets back in, a sensible centre-left Labour Government is not likely for two Parliaments - perhaps 2028 - by when she could be too old to be given a Cabinet post (despite her youthful looks for a 58-year-old....)

    Caroline Flint, one of few ex-Labour MP's who was honest enough to admit as to why Labour failed so miserably (again!). When the rest of the Labour rabble start to understand why they can't win General Elections anymore, then maybe, just maybe they will admit to their failings and one day become a party fit for office. Right now Labour are not fit to be the opposition !

      Flint didn't really have anywhere to go. The Labour leadership over the last few years has ostracised anyone (MP or otherwise) who hasn't bought in to the Marxist message at the top. It's ironic- Corbyn virtue signals like a broken record, always banging on about social justice and inclusiveness...but he didn't allow any other voices in the Labour party to be heard; the epitome of intolerance. I think Labour should have studied the 2015 GE result in Scotland. Labour was canned there not because Scots want independence but because Labour had become the party of privilege, cronyism, entitlement and complacency, and most of all because it was seen as a London party. At least the SNP, despite their manifest incompetence, are not that.
    Note, not an English party, a London one. The Scottish media had been full, for years of stories about how Scottish Labour, nationally a separate party, was being run by the London elite. People complained that the best and the brightest in the party were siphoned off to London. That Scottish concerns were shoved into a drawer and forgotten about. That word, London, was repeated in story after story and finally, Labour ran out of goodwill. Well that is EXACTLY what happened in the 'red wall'. Labour didn't learn a single thing from its Scottish defenestration. Not a damn thing and the voters, sick to the back teeth of their votes being assumed while they were not listened to, gave them their marching orders.
    If Labour think they can elect a new leader then go back to the same old same old, I think they will be punished again and again. And yet, look what they're doing. This really is turkeys voting for Christmas.
    Unless Labour can genuinely reconnect with the provincial voters, it will flounder. In a way Blair's cunning plan, to maximise immigration and so bolster the Labour vote, has completely backfired because of the concentration of those immigrants in London. This has just contributed to the idea that they are getting special treatment while the traditional working areas are simply to be ballot-box fodder, playing second fiddle to a metropolis that everyone who does not live there hates and a metropolitan elite they hate even more. And I do not see even ONE senior Labour member who begins to realise the enormity of the disaster or the scale of the mountain they'll have to climb.
    Boris Johnson has reinvented one nation conservatism in the shape of a tousle-headed likely lad, fizzing with vim and vigour and British to the core. His personal appeal is huge. Labour don't have a beast that even comes close.
