An interesting thing is when I first saw the Nixon object I assumed it was anti-Nixon-that his long nose was calling him deceitful or a liar.
Still reinforce the idea of a 4D object, I first viewed it that way because 1. I know the reputation and history of Nixon 2. I associate long noses with lying because of Pinocchio. All require context from other sources to come to such a conclusion/understanding.

When I saw the Obama "Hope"-poster for the first time in 2008, I thought it was the coolest looking thing, I'd ever seen! Granted, I was only 10 years old... Still, it really captured my attention and made me curious about pop art like it. A few years later, when the first kids in class gained access to the first iPhones, many installed Obama-hope-poster apps, that would turn your own picture into a high contrast version. Again, I thought that was the coolest thing ever and constantly played around with it.

2:46 I actually believe the tradition of the Democrats as a donkey goes back further than this -- my understanding was that it started in the 1820s with Andrew Jackson, when his opponents were attempting to mock him by calling him Andrew Jackass (and made cartoons to that effect). Instead of rejecting it, the Democrats got in on the joke and it stuck.
That's the version I had heard, at least.

23:20 another layer to it is that the phrasing of "Dark Brandon" and the lazer eyes is taken from the "Dark MAGA" meme, showing trump with the same lazer eyes. It predates Dark Brandon by a year or so. It was also a way of denoting how a second Trump term would not be "betrayed" by the establishment and basically be the "drain the swamp" presidency that he promised the first time. This also is connected to the "punished Trump" meme which is also quite funny to look at.

Brandon Brown actually ruined his own career due to the LGB thing: he raced for his own family team (in NASCAR's second-tier series) and was for years seen as a plucky underdog, *that* win being his first in the series. LGB brought him mostly bad press and he at first distanced himself from it, but for the next season (2022) he was offered sponsorship from LBG Coin, a MAGA-themed crypto. They promised a lot of money and he ended up embracing them, even abandoning his old sponsors who wanted nothing to do with that brand. Long story short, LGB Coin basically had no money and the family-owned team went bust mid-season, and he hasn't raced much since.
He was pushed into an uncomfortable spot, yes, but his and the team's demise was ultimately his own self-sabotage due to severely mishandling the situation.

Around 2004 I saw a George W. Bush bobblehead where if you push one button it would say some of his times he would use the wrong word or say a word that didn't exist (famously called Bushisms) but if you pushed another button it would say some if his well known more brash lines when talking about going after terrorism. It feels significant in that for much of the first few months of his presidency "Bush is dumb" was the go to punch line of late night comedians but then after 9/11 the rhetoric was "everyone is rallying behind Bush when it comes to the war on terror" but as the Iraq war dragged on and opposition arose whether you said one or the other became a partisan issue.

That being said, I think my personal favorite piece of presidential merch is a book called Duck for President, which sees a duck take over the farm he grew up on and hit the campaign trail, achieving higher and higher office by narrow margins and eventually becoming president but deciding he was happier on the farm. It’s a little propaganda-y but it’s got some fun references to actual presidential campaigns and taught little me about what people do to become president. I recommend.

One pretty niche contemporary reference that while at this point I don’t think it’s 4D, but could be depending on how you think of it, is related to Kamala’s campaign. In Jewish circles, I’ve seen Kamala campaign merch that either has a comma + לה (pronounced “lah”) or even just לה by itself. This is clearly referencing people’s struggle with pronouncing Kamala’s name, but funny enough לה literally means “her” in Hebrew. Kinda reminds me of the “I’m with her” slogan of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Also there’s a bit of a history of Hebrew/Yiddish campaign merch in the U.S., since U.S. Jews tend to be a strong Democratic voting bloc. I actually have a Barack Obama pin from 2008 with his name in Hebrew, and I remember seeing a similar if not identical copy of that pin in the Smithsonian with a bunch of other political pins. Pretty cool.

I think the idea of "4D objects" is very interesting-- my only question is what would be something that isn't "4D" or "less 4D?" I feel like you could argue that just about any culture object exists in the time it was made. You could definately argue that some things have more "timeliness" than others. Political memorabilia/propaganda I say being "extremely 4D" while on the other end an image of two people hugging or kissing (something universal to human culture) would be less so. Maybe I'm misunderstanding lol.

Slight correction. Max Headroom was indeed a British media creation, but the 1987-1988 series was on the American Broadcasting Company. There was a British show involving the character that premiered earlier (“The Max Headroom Show”) that featured Max as a video DJ of sorts. And there was a British TV movie that was the basis of the first episode or two of the American series.
Also while the original British version did have the human basis for Max (Edison Carter) die, the ABC version had him recover and interact with Max (as seen in the clip at 7:27).
Someone did a video essay about Max Headroom’s origins and influences (that even one of the creators of the character said it was right on the money), but not as much about the predictions that the show claimed would be “20 Minutes Into the Future”. One major reason is that the show simply isn’t available anywhere on streaming due to massive copyright entanglements.

What video essay was that? I tried watching one but it didn't seem to be going anywhere coherent.

@@JJMcCullough It’s from a UA-cam channel called “Space Feather”. The video is called “On Max Headroom: the Most Misunderstood Joke on TV”. If that’s the one that didn’t seem to be going anywhere coherent, there is a main throughline after all the “this video is from the future” stuff.

I can understand that. I would like to see more Max video essays. It’s an interesting topic that’s somewhat overlooked because (as you mentioned) the character became so overexposed that anything ancillary about the show itself or other characters got sort of cast aside.
To this day, I still think that a proper reboot of the character (with the original creators as a part of the production process) could make for some excellent streaming television and biting satire.
In an age when 24-hour news channels are more prevalent, ratings-driven, and corporate, when people are inundated with 5-second blipverts, and when computer-generated characters are becoming more commonplace, we have already reached the “20 minutes into the future” that the Max Headroom series had foreseen. In a DVD extra for the series, the creators of the character were champing at the bit to have another go with Max.
Plus, motion capture tech has improved so much that the original actor for Max, Matt Frewer, could still do the role and have a proper CG character instead of a heavy plastic suit and makeup made to look like 1980s CG. That was done with a cameo in the Adam Sandler movie “Pixels”, but the less said about that trainwreck the better.
