Thank you, thank you, thank you for part 2! I'm a 67 year old widow, doing a lot of things on my own. You showed me exactly how to get that gear box apart, (and I did snap a picture of everything lined up.) then put it in WD40 to soak. I'm so proud of myself, it's done and it works! And those umbrellas are heavy and awkward to work with. Thanks again, I couldn't have done it without your video.

Very glad it worked for you & had that “satisfaction feeling” afterwards. I always try to find a way to fix before I buy the replacement. (or repurpose the materials for a different fix) Keep on rockin’ widow of 67yrs, you got the skills!

@@athomehack7789 Project before this was the deck. I bought myself a belt sander for my birthday, sanded my deck, scrubbed with deck wash, then stained it. Took a week! Bought a 4 piece patio set, which came in 1 box, bag of screws and an allen key( I hate those things) Got that done too. It looks great. On to the next must do!

I've watched several of these repair videos and they are very helpful. I noticed each time that the WD40 needs to be used due to the moisture and rust that is present. When I opened mine it was half full of water which I assume gets in through the unsealed connections on the umbrella tube when the umbrella is in the closed position. While I had the winch assembly out of the housing I drilled 3 small holes in the bottom to help drain that water out and hopefully prolong my repair efforts by not roting and rusting the rope and winch assembly.

    • @mary-ellenscrivens8709

All those asking about getting a new shaft for the crank handle. If its the type with a square on one end where the handle fits and a slot on the threaded end.
I made a new one from a stainless steel coach screw, using the old one as a sample. Stainless so it shouldn't rust (off ebay), drilled a new hole and cut the slot with a hacksaw.
A fairly easy job if you are OK with DIY and have the suitable skills.
The exact size may vary depending on your mechanism.

@@michaelcooper9892 As I said, the actual size may vary depending on your mechanism. I used an M10 x 75 stainless steel coach screw (Carriage bolt) I actually drilled it at work on a bench drilling machine, but it should be possible to do in a vice by hand - carefully and using a high speed steel drill bit and cutting fluid.

Does anyone know what this bolt that almost everyone has a problem with breaking is called ? ? coach screw, cotter pin bolt, split pin hole bolt ? ? There must be somewhere to buy one? Many people are trying to get the center bolt/shaft for their patio umbrella because it broke at the thread! Company will not let us get another one or even tell us what this is bolt is called? Our umbrella cost several hundred dollars and practically brand new but because of this bolt that maybe cots $2 broke it is useless.

If it is a canvas umbrella the issue is the material has shrunk overtime. Try not to destroy your crank or rope assembly when the solution is to hacksaw off one inch off the end of each rod. This allows it to Crank up to proper hide again

How does the gear release for winding down the umbrella? Mine won't budge yet is free moving inside to wind it up. Also, when you do the "crimp washer" it must be on the flat of the nut. Where you had it, it does absolutely nothing to stop the nut moving.

Had to do that 3 more times, now it seems to be a final solution...the Spring was too tight! wow! so simple. will watch for awhile...attached small cord to bend in spring---to pull down...just in case!!! :D

i noticed that you had the cord wrapped around the crank assembly. my question is then with the umbrella closed after restringing all the cord should be at the crank area?

    • @athomehack7789
      @athomehack7789  3 роки тому +1

There should be a small hole in the crank assembly. Put the string through this hole 1st & tie it off. When you crank the umbrella in (to open) it should wrap around what’s already there. Likewise when you close the umbrella. (You want at least 12” of “slack” on the string, to open or shut)

I’m guessing something is getting “hung up” inside the tube, from the crank, inside the actual frame (tube) that opens & attached to the umbrella. I would start by checking that 1st. Then check to see if your “gear” is hung up and not functioning w/the “trigger” or stopper. I hope you get it fixed!

Is there something that applies tension on the trigger? I have a small wire attached with the same screw holding the trigger to the assembly and it broke and I can't figure out what it was for and my trigger will rest on the gear but will not function. It's loose. So I'm thinking maybe this wire applied tension to the trigger or acted as a spring.

You need to open up the “crank housing” and see if the gear(s) is damaged. (or what stops the gear from turning. Sounds like it’s stripped - hence the uncranking)
You need to have the gear lock into place for it to stop after it’s fully opened. I hope this helps!
