- "Die Gedanken sind frei" (Thoughts are free) is a German song about freedom of thought. The original lyricist and the composer are unknown, though the most popular version was rendered by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1842.

Freedom of speech or religion (as outlined in the American constitution) is downstream from freedom of thought or freedom of conscience (which unfortunately is not outlined explicitly, hence occasional confusions over the constitutionality of compelled speech). Freedom of speech without freedom of thought and conscience is a farce. Democracy without freedom of speech is a farce, as the consent of the governed can't be rightly obtained (or even reasonably inferred) if the public is not at liberty to speak its mind.

Die Stimme des Sängers ist so hart und fast schon schneidend, dass man sie nur unbeschadet anhören kann, wenn man ein bereits leicht geschädigtes Gehör hat. Bei solchen Gelegenheiten entdecke ich immer wieder, dass Leute, denen diese Stimme in den Ohren nicht weh tut, bereits etwas auditiv abgestumpft sein müssen. Die merken ihre Unempfindlichkeit dann nicht mehr. Die sollten am besten ihren Hörapparat untersuchen lassen, um möglichst nicht zu früh taub zu werden.
Hm so schlimm finde ich es nicht.

Picture a scene, an angry crowd of German citizens made of mostly peasants and working class protesting the governnments poor actions proving almost detrimental to them, on the opposing side of the mob would be a line of German/Prussian soldier guards rifles aimed with an officer ready with the order, as the tension seem to be ready to boil over, a single working class man would step forward, he takes a deep breath and starts to sing this very song, as the soldiers listen to the lyrics they slowly start to lower down their rifles out of pure sympathy and awe at the man, even the officer himself whose orders were to fire was in awe at this display, he drops his saber and begins moving through the soldier line, the officer tells his men "Leg deine arme nieder, lass ihn singen" (put down your arms, let him sing) the soldiers follows the officer's orders and lay down their rifles out of respect and awe as the man finishes the song, everyone would clap including the army men.
It was sung to me with these lyrics:

My mother is German (and so am I obviously), but she's very narcissistic, while Im on the spectrum (PDA).
My entire life she would try to control my mind through manipulation....
Then I went "und lerne Deutsch" which is something she always wanted to do....

Drives her insane!!!!
Sometimes I'll be trapped in the car with her, as driving in NYC is too overstimulating for me, and that's her favorite place to start.
I either put my headphones on at top volume or even put it on the car stereo, if my aunt is with us, as it turns out THIS was my great grandfather's favorite song... and then she sits there with a pissy look, as my aunt and I sing it.
My aunt doesn't know the significance for me, as mom is a covert narcissist, and only I'm "lucky" enough to see that side of her.
