Understanding the geogrphical features help us understand the different culture adopted by different settlements in ancient history in convenient way. Geographical feature are the reasons for the settlements of early civilizations like the Indus valley civilization as the sheilding of Northern boundaries from cold siberian winds and foreign invasions provides a much secure habitat for the early civilizations. The climate and river pattern provide relief for the settlements in terms of agriculture, trade and navigation. The coasts play their own role in the expansion of different dynasties , The harbours enhanced the trade and commerce and defined the status of the dynasties back in the ancient time. The use of tools and other equipments developed agriculture to the surpuls capacity & also enriched the power and ablity of a dynasties like the use of iron made Maghads and Satvahanas comparatively more stronger than others. The rich sources of copper , coal and iron in the mineral belts like chotanagpur plateau and khetri mines of Rajasthan helped in the development of metallurgy. The Geographical features were somewhere responsible for the conflicts like the conflict of Satvahanas and Sakas over Malwa plateau. The availability of natural resources such as metals, minerals, and timber influenced the economic activities and technological advancements of early societies. Regions rich in resources often attracted settlements and sparked trade networks. In this way the geogrphical features had significant influence on early settlements.

Herodotus said that all history must be treated geographically and all geography must be treated historically Knowledge of geography helps us to make hypothesis ,conduct archaelogical survey and make cause effect relationship 1) Monsoon - traders sailed with Southwest monsoon from Western Asia and Mediterranean it facilitated trade when Vasco de Gama found the sea route 2) mountainous knowledge- invasions protection from Central Asia mostly in various came from Northwest part 3) multiple passes allowed foreign access to Kashmir valley became centre for Sanskrit cultivation 4) rivers were used as political boundaries ~Kalinga situated between Mahanadi and Godavari river ~Ashoka stone pillars were transported by both boat ~cities like arikamedu Mahabalipuram and kaveripatnam situated on Coromandel coast 5) understanding about States geomorphology Khetri copper mines in Rajasthan attracted settlements in chalcolithic period Gujarat's coastal area indented control by establishing harbours 6) Natural frontier hindered control by single ruling person ~ vindhaya Mountain as boundary Dravidian language in the south and Indo Aryan language in north 7) knowledge of minerals Copper belt in the khetri zones belonging to period before c.1000 BC
Understanding of geographical features provide broad outlook to see the evolution of historical events. The existence of any civilization is possible only if it gets sufficient resources. Human settlement can be possible around river side because water is an essential for its existence. The geographical features help in the growth of civilization. Mineral reserve of particular region accelerates the economic growth of that region ,like khetri mines of copper in rajasthan helps the Harappan people to develop metallurgy. Knowledge of geographical features help in trade. The Bolon and Khyber passes in the north west of India helps in trade through land route while the south west monsoon and north east monsoon help in trade through sea. Thus geography plays an important role in determining the history of the particular region.
Herodotus (father of indian history ) He was strong supporter of idea that all history must be treated geographically and all geography must be treated historically. Geographical features like river ,natural barrier like mountains, monsoon, several passes like khebar pass , and abundance of minerals help us to understanding History. For example 1.River - It served as arteries of commerce and communication. Indus -gangateic plains are fertile due to presence of alluvium, which help in settlement. Important towns and capitals like Hastinapur, prayag and varanshi situated on river bank . Harbour ports helps in trade with foreign countries.Malabar coast species centre famous for trade so ,rastrakuta chalukya ,cholas and pallavas fought for that. 2.Monsoon - gave knowledge about cultivation. South -west monsson helps us in cultivation of kharif crop . And North -east monsson help in cultivation of rice in region like bihar and up this region also receive rainfall 100 + cm .3 Himalaya - It play singnifact role to protect us from foreign invasions and also from siberian wind .so that people feel safe and settled here .this area is congested and populated.4 Minerals also help to understand about our history Indus valley civilization also knowns as bronze civilization that denoted we have strong trade with other country so that we imports tin and made bronze . Lead found in andhar pradesh so that satvahana made lead coins .Gold founded in abounded quantity at Gupta period be came to know about it because they made gold coins.. All this Geographical evidence help us to understand our past in better way.so, without geography we cannot predict History...
The understanding of geographical features is essential for understanding of history as it gives ideas about the abundance of natural resources in that area. The geographical features can make us aware about the economic and trade capabilities of a dyanasty. The state of Gujrat and Maharashtra located near sea with major ports became important centre for trade. Natural resources such as iron ore found in abundance in Magadh gave them upper hand in war due to well build war equipments. In South India, Calicut became an important centre due to presence of port which facilitated ease of spice trade with Europeans. The discovery of Khetri mines of copper led to development of settlement in Rajasthan area even though there was water scarcity. From the ancient remains we can see bronze sculptures made during the rule of Cholas and Palas which makes us aware of use of tin. Similarly, the settlements near river Tapi and Loni as well as monsoon patterns gives us knowledge about the agricultural crops of that region.

Understanding of geographical features is essential for understanding of ancient history because they makes us aware about how the trade and the settlement occurred in the ancient time. They also tells us about how the monsoon , rivers , and the relief features of India like Himalaya, plain area effect the trade, settlement, and invasion from enemies. Understanding of monsoon to ancient people not only helps in agriculture but also help them in trading , traveling from one continent to other continent . This results in flourishing tha exchange of cultures and languages between continents. Also the rivers in ancient time , not only providing water, alluvial soil but also act as a barrier between two kingdoms, rivers also act as the political barrier in ancient times. Minerals and resources also influences our ancient history. Till the discovery of Iron mostly ancient people settle in the western part because in the eastern part there was dense forest area and they couldn't cut the forests without iron(axes). Mostly iron was found in the Magdha region and this was one of the reason for the domination of Maghda empire , as they could make better tools and weapons from iron . Himalayas not only protecting us form cold Siberian winds but also protecting us from invasions from enemies . The northwest part of Himalayas have two passes , khyber pass and Bolan pass , from these passes movement of ancient people occurred. Also there are some many more reasons for studying geographical settings for understanding ancient history.
