  • The West Village has a rich artistic and bohemian history. It was a hub for artists, writers, musicians, and intellectuals in the 20th century, with figures like Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, and Jackson Pollock having lived or spent time here. The neighborhood's creative spirit can still be felt through its many art galleries, theaters, and music venues.
This neighborhood is often referred to as part of Greenwich Village, a larger neighborhood that encompasses the western part of the original Greenwich Village settlement. The terms "West Village" and "Greenwich Village" are often used interchangeably, but some locals make a distinction between the two areas
The West Village has a strong sense of community, and it has attracted a mix of residents, including young professionals, artists, families, and long-time locals. Despite being part of a bustling city, the neighborhood maintains a somewhat peaceful and laid-back atmosphere.
Due to its desirability and historical significance, the West Village is one of the most sought-after and expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan. Housing prices tend to be higher compared to other areas of the city, and the real estate market can be competitive
Fun fact: one of the main characters of Sex In The City, Carrie Bradshaw, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, lived in a fictional West Village apartment throughout much of the series.
The West Village apartment of Carrie Bradshaw became iconic and synonymous with her character's fashionable and glamorous lifestyle

В зимние морозные дни особенно хочется окунуться в теплую безмятежную атмосферу этих милых улиц .

Looks like West Village Houses at 4:38, West 11th and Washington. Enjoyed living there in the seventies and early eighties. It was a different neighborhood back then.

Yeap, you are right! It's right around the corner. This is Greenwich and 11th and one block down the 11th is Washington. I'm sure it was more connected back then in terms of the community

This is beautiful, calming yet inspiring. It has the charm of a countryside mixed with the vibrant of a big city. It looks like a Woody Allen coded movie.

Thank you! It's funny that you mentioned Woody Allen. I like his movie 'Manhattan' but wasn't consciously referencing it. Now I see it too 😀

As a dog walker I stroll these streets 365/7. I know it's nice, but that doesn't undo the horribleness of America in 2023. What good is lovely with so many awful people in our midst? Most of you educated folks know what I am referring to, unless, of course, you are part of the mean coalition. As I've gotten older in the West Village, America has become anything but lovely. This is not the America I was born into. The kids are right to be concerned, but they never lived in a better America. They have never known pleasant or decent or neighborliness. Yes the Village is pretty. Wealthy foreigners have snatched up those historical homes, spending fortunes to turn apartments into single-family venues. Not many "shared values" in that tower of Babel. I try to take in the splendor of the West Village, but it's hard. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

While I'm still relatively new to the city, I know what you mean. There's definitely no feel of neighborliness as most of the current residents were not born here. I think it's a common "blight" of many neighborhoods of New York City. The bigger the "brand" of the city, the smaller the true value. People are ready to outbid each other only to get this "status" of living in the heart of the Big Apple while in many cases coping with the life of a worm. But, hey, the Babylon is a hectic swarm of never stopping energy, good and bad. You wire yourself for bad - it'll find you, you strive for good - it's abundant too. The naysayers' pandemic prophecy of the fading city never came to fruition - the city stands even stronger, it says something. Such a big city will be always transforming, we're just passing the turbulence - brace yourself!

I feel like most of that is just Manhattan. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 2000s/ 2010s, and there was tons of community of my block. All the neighbors knew each other, and we all had spare keys to each other's homes. Every sping the block association put on a block party that we all loved. Manhattan is definitely the best part of the city to visit and has the most stuff to do, but if you're looking for a place to live the outer boroughs are way better!
