Border Crossing in an RV - The Right Way | TRIPPED RV - Alaska Ep2

  • After the disastrous border crossing in an RV into Canada, we decided not to take any chances for round two! Even though we were entering back into the US and should be greeted with a hug and a cup of hot cocoa, we knew that it would be assumed we were a threat to national security until proven otherwise.

For border crossing in an RV this time we planned ahead. Here's what we had organized way ahead of time so when we rolled up to the border guard there wouldn't be any fumbling around:
1.) Passports- Yes, we had them last time. I understand if it sounded confusing in the previous video. We've visited somewhere around 30+ countries. We know we need passports. (Email my mom if you're still upset about last time. )
2.) List of all meat, vegetables, and fruit in the RV- Is this overkill? Yes. Have the border guards really liked it? Yes. Have any of the border guards confiscated anything based on this list? Also yes- two limes.
3.) List of all alcohol in the RV- When you're driving around what is essentially a house, you forget how much alcohol you might be dragging around with you. We had quite few fifths of different kind of alcohol that might have been 1/4 to 1/2 full, some assorted six packs, a couple bottles of wine...you get it. While you're supposed to pay duty on anything over a certain limit going into the US or Canada the border guards liked that we had a black and white list of exactly what alcohol we had on board. While we were above the limit through several crossings we never had to pay duties.
4.) All dog health records- We were never asked to present these but based on online research you need to be able to prove your dog is current with rabies shots.
Next time you're doing a border crossing in an RV we hope these little tips help. Might seem like overkill but they made our experience much smoother!

You guys just totally crack me up! That Alaska/Canada border will get ya every time! Been here 50 years now (waaaay back when we didn't need passports) and it's always going to make you either laugh or pull your hair out...cuz there's the 'not border', the 'maybe this is it? border', the actual border, and then the sign Welcome to Alaska. I adore your vids!

As someone who lives on the border and crosses often - When going across the border, take off your sunglasses, look them in the eye, if you are the passenger, look at them but don’t speak unless spoken to (look respectable and be respectable). NEVER tell them you are doing a vlog or working (which I think you found out) You are just vacationing. I watch a lot of these videos and Americans seem to think Canada is no big deal but look around...We’re a big deal - you’re not entering some small back woods country. Happy Travels!

"is that an ipad? I knew it!" Classic:) I sympathize with your border crossing experiences. Their questions can leave alot of room for interpretation but if they sense you are being cheeky, its game over.

We sat and watched that "close up" bison for way longer than it seems on camera. We have SO much footage of him rolling around and enjoying himself. He didn't care we were there at all.

Haha...great vid! He came back from a long trip in Mexico a few months ago and the border agent was more worried about the chorizo we had in our cooler than our dog. Good ol US of A...

Back in 1970, I had a VW bus and would travel western Canada in loops from Seattle where I was collecting unemployment. I had a habit of visiting the local food coop in Seattle before taking off and buying a very large bag of peanuts in the shell which I would eat as I drove merrily along my way. I would simply throw the shells on the flat floor of the bus as I drove. By the time I was on my way back to Seattle I would have a nice 4 inch thick layer of shells in the entire cab. I stopped at a border crossing in a very small town in Montana and a guard came up to my passenger door and asked if he could look inside. I said sure and when he opened the door, a mound of peanut shells emptied out and covered his feet. Without moving he looked down and then back up , then down and up again and with a straight face said, "so what are you ? a squirrel smuggler" ? Then he broke into a big grin and we both had a laugh :-)

I'll try this next time. I used to pull the same move when I drove dump trucks. Just with sunflower seeds instead of peanuts.

Just out of curiosity, does Tim do all the driving? Oh! by the way, my sister used to go Horseback riding at midnight in the Summer when she lived in Alaska. Summer twilight is really cool.

I do a whole bunch of driving- but that means Fin is always navigating....pretty much everywhere we go. That midnight sun really messes with the body clock.

Being from Vancouver BC, there aren't many people here that haven't had experience with crossing the American border, it's basically the southern border of Metro Vancouver. I've crossed the border hundreds of times myself, and also live in the US part of the year. Number one rule - never disrespect a border guard. They can rip your car apart, and they don't have to put back together again.

My son and I were also perplexed as to the distance between the two border checkpoints. When we came through on October 25th last month there was a foot of snow at the Canadian shack and it was green as can be at the American one. Yes it does make me feel better to know we were treated poorly too at this crossing. I just can believe that an American citizen has to experience such angst coming back into the country. I hope you enjoyed Alaska as much as I did!

Try to get a reservation when they open up for the campgrounds? We really enjoyed staying at Lake Louise campground. It was a good hopping off spot to check out different areas of the park. I don'tknow if this is possible for you either but we wish we had just a few more days there. We spent about a week in Banff but could have used 10 days to get a few more long hikes in with Pepper.

I'm sure bordering crossing guys hear weird/funny answers all the time. Like from my hubby when we traveled to Canada last year. On our way into Canada, the guard asked if we were planning on leaving anything behind, to which my hubby responded "umm...our trash". In his defense he was a bit nervous talking to the guard, but we had a good laugh about it the rest of the trip.
