Friend down the block neighbor was going to the dump with a lawnmower. He asked why, and the owner said it won't start and bought an electric. He said he was done with gas machines. The lawnmower was only used 2 times. My friend brought a 21-inch Lawnboy with a 6.5 Kohler motor. The mower sat for 1 1/2 with ethonal fuel in it. Carb bowl had brown bits and white gell and rust bits all over. The emultion tub had 3 holes plugged. Spent 1/2 hour cleaning everything up and started first pull. The machine definitely was only used 2 or 3 times. Now my buddy across the street has a free brand new mover for his lake lot. It's a shame people spend all this money on machines and neglect simple maintenance. Your only one click away & 5 minutes of your time to watch a video & save you some money. Great video.

Having done much carb work on cars and small engines, I have found that electric guitar strings are amazing for cleaning out tiny air passages and jets. A set comes with smooth and wound strings of 6 sizes per set. Cost practically nothing and will take decades to wear them out.

Darn. I did this all two weeks ago...left lil bit of fuel in mower over Winter, but I use K100 per your recommendation, which scratched my head. Then I took the carb out, bowl was clean, and I used air to blow all out, along with the filter. Put it all back and nope, no start. So I suspected plug, and it was bit dirty, so some emery and gap check and still, no start. Then I thought, did the magneto fail? I didn't see a spark with the tester so... took pullcable assembly off, and found the magneto needed gap set. I took some hi grit sand paper and ran over magneto area to remove some rust, then gapped per your tip on using a business card, and reassembled. Viola, first pull! Your channel has allowed me to keep my mowers and lawn equipment going and my wallet spared! Thank you Dony!

There's another trick to keeping gas from going stale in the carburetor bowl.
On my Honda GCV160 lawnmower I installed a fuel shutoff in the hose between the tank and the carburetor. When the mowing season is coming to an end I'll let the level in the tank get low, but not so low that it'll allow dirt to flow into the hose. I'll run the engine until it gets to normal running temperature, then turn off the fuel flow and let the engine die out from lack of fuel. There's a drain screw on the lower edge of the bowl, so I'll open it and drain what fuel remains out of the bowl. I also drain the remaining fuel from the tank.
So far, there haven't been any problems with clogged jets or a gummed up carburetor (knocking on wood)!

I have a 2004 Quantum engine mower that I have always ran dry at the end of the season. I’ve never been into the carb or anything else for that matter. I change the air filter every season and the oil every other season. It’s only had the spark plug replaced once. I don’t believe in fuel stabilizers but it’s only been ran on 91 non ethanol its whole life.

I have a wheelbarrow sprayer that I had not used since mid July. I went and check it out yesterday as the "spraying season" is here. I've usually had to clean the spark plug, take away the carburetor like in this video and clean it all out, you name it.
This time it started on the second pull and I didn't even had to pour new gasoline. The only thing I did when I put it away was closing the fuel line so it run until it had no more gasoline in the tube/carburetor. I was surprised both for it to start on the second try and also that there was still some gasoline in the deposit, as it's cap it's not exactly a perfect seal but... it worked.
Thanks for video, nice info as usual.

Clean out your pilot jet. In this video it’s the little black plastic part underneath the screw. The orifice is tiny, a single copper strand out of 16 guage wire should go through the tiny brass jet.
That should cure the surging on these Honda style carburetors.

I always run my push mowers dry so no gas is in the tank/carb. I use guitar strings for clearing tiny holes. You have 6 sizes to choose from.
I notice the screwdriver really did a number on the top edges of the jet. If your running a Holley carb in your old car here in Canada, you can no longer get premium fuel with 0% ethanol. So you’ll need to increase the primary jet size by 2. In mine I went from a 70 to a 72. Besides that I use Ethanol Shield from Home Depot in my 1970 car and yard engines.

I just fixed an old 1970's Briggs that was sitting for years with gas in it by just pouring some seafoam and carb cleaner mix straight into the carb. Used starter fluid to pull it through a few times and away it went, runs like a champ. The tank was clean inside though and if there was any debris this would not work. People need to quit being lazy and just run the machine dry / remove the fuel line to empty the tank, then pull the drain plug on the carb. 2 minutes a year will save you thousands over your lifetime and you don't even have to pull the carb.

usually it's just the jet at the bottom of the bowl. remove it and clean it. no need to take carb apart, yet!

how many mowers and lawn equipment get kicked to the curb because of something as simple as this.....i used to rip my arm out of the socket every spring and fall trying to start these machines getting ready for the upcoming season whether it is snow or grass....i usually run them dry (when I had gasoline powered equipment) but the only gas item I have now is my Ariens snow blower...the rest of my stuff is EGO....so much less stressful or crossed fingers at the beginning of each season

Hey don i have a mower with ohv engine, the valve cover is stuck and wont come off what can i do to get it off?

    • @37yearsofanythingisenough39
      @37yearsofanythingisenough39 Місяць тому +2

Tap around it with a small soft faced hammer or something that won’t bend the sheetmetal. If it is a factory installed cover it is just being held by the bond established between the cover and the gasket underneath plus the heat from the engine over time. If you see material that has oozed out around it someone has applied some sort of sealant around it and it will require more effort and a new gasket in all likelihood.

Sometimes I get in between cover and valve with flat screwdriver and pry but do it evenly to avoid bending cover.

I know you’re doing this is a paid job so you have to do it right to avoid a comeback, but for anyone with this issue with their personal machine, you can usually clean the main jet by leaving the carb on, removing the bolt from the bottom of the float bowl and just using compressed air to blow up through the hole. This works if it’s just a minor plug from sitting over the winter. I wouldn’t advise this if you’re doing it for a customer though since it’s not always a sure fix.

Just an observation on 'premium' or 'super' grade pump gasoline sold in Canada,
while it *could* have better additives in it, since late 2022 it is blended with ethanol
just like regular grade and just as prone to accumulate moisture.
Those 'canned' or engineered fuels may not go bad as quickly but are
no guarantee your machine will perform the same as using gasoline.
