The rules are consistent. Each individual case is what is not consistent. That’s why they have lawyers and review panels. Overall, tennis is way too strict. The penalties are very harsh.

The problem is how they treated Sinner. The rules have been in place for a long time, and they may not be perfect, but still they are like that for a reason. Once you start giving preferential treatment to some players, you create a chaos, and questions that are asked are valid

Difficult to compare different cases - but the main thing for me is why didn’t Sinner receive a one-month suspension like Swiatek? As for transparency, all players should get an opportunity to prove their innocence before their cases are made public, but I don’t agree with the ITIA waiting as long as 4 months before disclosing Sinner’s case. Should have been more transparency there. Also absolutely doesn’t excuse Kyrgios’ nasty personal attacks.

A test done 2 days after the positive one was negative. Iga's hair test proved her innocence. She shouldn't have been punished at all. Tennis is sinking itself. Tests are frequent and the penalties are draconian: a month's suspension for innocence with a contaminated medicine, half a year for innocence with a contaminated supplement, 2 years and publication if you didn't present valuable evidence within 10 days. Meanwhile, in track and field, athletes compete in major competitions 10 to a dozen or so times a year for a few to a dozen minutes at each tournament and are tested once every Ruthenian year. Most of the suspensions we hear about in tennis are micro amounts from contamination. ITIA is experimenting on players for a self-feeding idea that doesn't care about people.

If a player (any player) can successfully appeal the provisional suspension within 10 days of notification, the suspension is lifted and the player can compete. In those specific circumstances, the positive test is not disclosed until a final judgment is reached. It's not shady or suspicious though I think the ITIA needs to do a much better job of explaining this process.

Djokovic has only helped to fuel the fire of controversy against Sinner, who has done nothing wrong. According to the rules, Sinner had the right to not reveal the results of his drug testing because he appealed, but just look at the unfair backlash he's getting. Djokovic: "[Jannik] doesn't seem like the type of person that would do something like that." Why didn't he just say that he believes Jannik is innocent of doping and he acted within the anti-doping rules? I agree that there needs to be more consistency and transparency in the reporting of test results, but only if the level of a banned substance is of an insignificant level and deemed not to enhance performance. That would stop innocent players being branded and stigmatised. Sadly, Djokovic has aligned himself with Kyrgios who brands all players testing positive as cheaters, regardless of the circumstances.
The investigation into Sinners case found that the level of the banned substance was used by a member of his 'physio' team transferred to him during treatment, was so minuscule, that it wouldn't have any physiological 'advantage', hence their conclusions and decisions made with regards to their findings. I disagree and think any results should NOT be publicized until either (1) the case goes to trial, or (2) the athlete pleads guilty. I think "innocent until PROVEN guilty" should apply, particularly when non-performance enhancing test results happen to an athlete. Nick and Novak are both correct. Iga said she paid for everything including hiring a US based lawyer. A US based lawyer wouldn't be cheap. What about those players who don't have the millions to pay their way to freedom?

The whole controversy has not covered Tennis Authorities with glory. They utterly failed to rein in transparency, consistency & accountability. The lack of transparency is really shocking. It seems like just a matter of "please don't publish the case before it's resolved" but if n. 500 asks, will that be done? I just can't get this part. Obviously when you avoid the public knowing you're being investigated, you avoid uncomfortable speculations and so, but why some just have to handle with that and other not? There's no doping problem in tennis, there's privileged treatment problem and that is ITIA's issue. Some people say the whole thing is about money to hire the best lawyers, something only the top players can do, but just look for how much money Halep spent and who were her defenders, it's not a money problem, it's deeper and that's the scariest part. When confidence is degraded, it's tough not to get paranoid.

@VaJoRo well the basic process should be I.e. how the player is notified, the appeal process, whether it's made public or not etc. But the outcomes then differ according to circumstance. Also people talk a lot about the time taken etc. It probably varies a bit depending on how complex the case is, but the main delay seems to come if there is an appeal as CAS processes appear to be pretty slow. Halep's appeal took ages as has WADA's in the Sinner case.
Novak wants to have a chance in Melbourne. Rules are crazy. Why should Sinner dope, risking so much and not having enhanced his performance at all? Crazy. there was a case, where on some ITF event players have been tested positive and the source was some nudles in the food they got in the hotel organized by the tournament.

Why halep's case was announced publicly the day she got suspended and why swiatek's case was announced months after she served her ban? Let's keep aside who's guilty or not. Isn't this enough to show that both were treated differently? Why halep had to go through all this and swiatek was done and dusted behind the closed doors.. moreover you might know that it's never revealed publicly by the authorities how much of the banned substance was found in the athletes blood since it's kept confidential. Difficult to compare different cases - but the main thing for me is why didn’t Sinner receive a one-month suspension like Swiatek? As for transparency, all players should get an opportunity to prove their innocence before their cases are made public, but I don’t agree with the ITIA waiting as long as 4 months before disclosing Sinner’s case. Should have been more transparency there. Also absolutely doesn’t excuse Kyrgios’ nasty personal attacks.

A test done 2 days after the positive one was negative. Iga's hair test proved her innocence. She shouldn't have been punished at all. Tennis is sinking itself. Tests are frequent and the penalties are draconian: a month's suspension for innocence with a contaminated medicine, half a year for innocence with a contaminated supplement, 2 years and publication if you didn't present valuable evidence within 10 days. Meanwhile, in track and field, athletes compete in major competitions 10 to a dozen or so times a year for a few to a dozen minutes at each tournament and are tested once every Ruthenian year. Most of the suspensions we hear about in tennis are micro amounts from contamination. ITIA is experimenting on players for a self-feeding idea that doesn't care about people.

If a player (any player) can successfully appeal the provisional suspension within 10 days of notification, the suspension is lifted and the player can compete. In those specific circumstances, the positive test is not disclosed until a final judgment is reached. It's not shady or suspicious though I think the ITIA needs to do a much better job of explaining this process.

Djokovic has only helped to fuel the fire of controversy against Sinner, who has done nothing wrong. According to the rules, Sinner had the right to not reveal the results of his drug testing because he appealed, but just look at the unfair backlash he's getting.

I agree that there needs to be more consistency and transparency in the reporting of test results, but only if the level of a banned substance is of an insignificant level and deemed not to enhance performance. That would stop innocent players being branded and stigmatised.

I think "innocent until PROVEN guilty" should apply, particularly when non-performance enhancing test results happen to an athlete. The whole controversy has not covered Tennis Authorities with glory. They utterly failed to rein in transparency, consistency & accountability. Discrimination was very evident in which the whole sordid issue was handled. Keeping it under wraps for over 5 months from the glaze of public eye only made the controversy even more repugnant. And giving a clean certificate and conversely stripping away prize money and points made it comical and cast aspersions on the integrity of Authorities and the whole process. Sinner escaping even charges of negligence passing on the entire buck to his physio cut no ice. Only WADA's appeal if successful can restore the image of Tennis as a clean sport. Else, there is every risk of such episodes occuring every now and then with a measure of impunity.

The lack of transparency is really shocking. It seems like just a matter of "please don't publish the case before it's resolved" but if n. 500 asks, will that be done? I just can't get this part. Obviously when you avoid the public knowing you're being investigated, you avoid uncomfortable speculations and so, but why some just have to handle with that and other not? There's no doping problem in tennis, there's privileged treatment problem and that is ITIA's issue. Some people say the whole thing is about money to hire the best lawyers, something only the top players can do, but just look for how much money Halep spent and who were her defenders, it's not a money problem, it's deeper and that's the scariest part. When confidence is degraded, it's tough not to get paranoid.

@VaJoRo well the basic process should be I.e. how the player is notified, the appeal process, whether it's made public or not etc. But the outcomes then differ according to circumstance. Also people talk a lot about the time taken etc. It probably varies a bit depending on how complex the case is, but the main delay seems to come if there is an appeal as CAS processes appear to be pretty slow. Halep's appeal took ages as has WADA's in the Sinner case.

I think most tennis fans are too stupid to read past the headlines and too quick to grab the pitchforks. Even now, some people compare Halep's case with Swiatek's. What would transparency from day 1 do aside from triggering everyone even more?
Why halep's case was announced publicly the day she got suspended and why swiatek's case was announced months after she served her ban? Let's keep aside who's guilty or not. Isn't this enough to show that both were treated differently? Why halep had to go through all this and swiatek was done and dusted behind the closed doors.. moreover you might know that it's never revealed publicly by the authorities how much of the banned substance was found in the athletes blood since it's kept confidential. So how much each is actually doping is beyond our reach unless made public.

The way Sharapova and Halep were treated compared to Jannik and Swiatek is just confusing to me. Yet they were all found innocent.
Actually Sharapova has accepted the responsibility and the punishment. And to me, she is the one that was the least guilty.

Kyrgios has been far more consistent and principled on this issue than Djokovic, who is just now getting to the party and seems like the attention-seeker here.
@ to me i think Kyrgios is consistent on it because it’s the only thing he has to be relevant right now, i mean maybe he’s passionate on the subject but this is also the guy who says he doesn’t even care about tennis half of the time, who knows what he really believes in. Kyrgios does not want Sinner suspended. He has said many times that Sinner is probably the best player in the world right now and he himself is unlikely ever to get back to his former level with his major surgery. Kyrgios wants what we all want - equality of treatment of all players regardless of rank, wealth or value to the tour. If that means silence - fine. If that means getting their case heard immediately - fine.

Sinner case looks shady only because of the fact that nobody knew about it. That's a very bad look. Everyone has to be treated equally, not some players are getting their career out of the window and some are operating in the dark with fancy lawyers.
