I worked at Blackpool tower in the 1980's and while I never got to the lower sections, which had a zoo there at the time, there were other staff that often talked about a large doorway facing inland rom the back of the tower building that was heavily locked. Everybody wanted to know what it was and why it was shut off to seemingly everybody. Many said it was a passageway or tunnel and it would have run more or less along the red line route route at the you discussed at the 13 minute mark to the Olympia. The tower basement is pretty deep and would probably be below basements of other buildings.
What I do know is there were "secret" passageways behind the public passages in the tower. You could walk around the edges of the ballroom for example without being seen. I've been in some of them, but my memory is a little vague and I can't even remember how they were accessed.
There are lots of theories about tunnels in Blackpool, not least one running from the town hall by Talbot road to Rigby Road tramsheds (current bus depot), which was apparently built as an emergency exit route for town hall staff and executives during WW2. In Talbot Square, adjacent to the town hall entrance, there were underground toilets until fairly recently and there was at least one doorway which led who knows where in there. There were simllar underground toilets near central pier, which was close to the tramsheds, and near south pier. The toilets at central pier also had an entrance on the opposite side of the road next to the pier if I remember correctly. I always thought it an odd coincidence that all three underground toilets were all opposite each of the three piers. In the tramsheds there were service pits and in one of those pits there was a locked doorway at one end. Nobody knew what was behind the doorway but it wasn't a storeroom, you could just see what seemed like the glow from distant electric light through tiny gaps and feel air coming from behind the door. Rumour was that it was a passageway that went to the town hall.
It would not surprise me in the least, if there are multiple tunnels in Blackpool. The toilets across from the north pier were underground, not sure if they still exist?
There are tunnels all under Manchester and London, and probably many other UK towns/cities!
Great video as always Darren, love your attention to detail in everything you do, particularly your historical photo comparisons showing the differences in time where possible👍
A video on Blackpool tower itself would be marvellous if possible, a few years back some great pics of its construction were shown, apparently not seen before.
Keep up your amazing work, a great pleasure to watch and to see an insight in to our great country and its history.
Thanks Gary
I worked as a casual. silver service waitress for functions held in the Winter Gardens. We picked up the platters in the Tower and walked through the tunnels to the Gardens
Loved the whole series on the Winter Gardens Darren, Brilliant insight in to the history of this iconic building
Glad you enjoyed it
I worked as a performer at the Tower and I remember being shown a filled in opening below the Tower Circus by a workmate who’d also worked at the Winter Gardens. He stated it had been access to the tunnels. It seemed to be an accepted fact that the tunnel existed by other workers.. generally those who’d been there a long time.
I heard the same too
Similar to what I heard when I worked there in the 1980's, but I heard that it was a large locked doorway, not a filled in opening.
Great vid my friend. History is one of my passions too, and the kind of content you provide is spot on! The amount of research you must have to do, the editing...! THANKS MAN, pleas keep feeding my curious mind.
Thanks Gabrielle. I do spend a lot of time on these.
I nearly missed this! We need you to make more videos maybe Wednesday and Sundays! I know you are a busy man though. Loving your content 👌
I wish I could. I just don't have the time anymore.
I was an extra in the cast of Rudolph Valentino in the mid 70s. It was filmed in the Tower around the boxing ring, dinner was laid on for us at the Winter Gardens where we were led through the tunnels from the tower to the Winter Gardens as we were dressed in top hats or tails.
I think I read your story somewhere else online. Drop me an email and I'll show you some pics and see if you recognise anything. darren@adventureme.co.uk
Thanks Darren , I’m on hols at the moment I’ll contact you when I’m back..
Yes me too thankyou
All the History here, thank you for sharing
Fantastic video and really very professionally produced. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Much appreciated!
I lived in Blackpool for many years and there was always whispers about the tunnels. The history of Blackpool is fascinating and I loved your insight into the Winter Gardens. I believe the tunnels existed but clearly no longer. Love to see the old Blackpool photos, most which I've never seen before. Thank you.
Thanks 👍
Another fantastic and very interesting video Darren. Me and my young family often go to Blackpool for my kids ballroom dancing competitions in the winter gardens and the tower ballroom, so learning about the history, construction and stories behind these iconic locations is fascinating.
Glad you enjoyed it
Glad I watched it before they asked for bits to be removed. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode Darren. I honestly don't see what the problem is, even if it is a security risk. If the tunnels are all blocked, no one can get in anyway!
I think it was more the under carriage of winter gardens
It's a shame they won't give you a behind the scenes guided tour through "door 25". Not sure why it's all so top secret... it's part of our history
They don’t want people discovering our real history and the real age of the tunnels because it would destroy the narrative that Victorians built industrial Britain. They didn’t - it was there long before the Victorians. But history is written by the victors (Victor-ians).
Re load just as enjoyable. Well done.
What an interesting and enjoyable film. It makes you wonder why the tunnels have been (mostly) denied but I firmly believe the Victoria Street tunnel did exist along with many more in the town.
Yes me too
Thanks for another great video 👍
An old neighbour of mine worked on the sewers in Blackpool from the mid 60s to about 1990 and occasionally told me of other tunnels he'd had to go in because he had extensive experience of working underground ( the equivalent of subcontracting these days , I guess) . They weren't part of the sewer network and would back up the utility bits you can't show of Victoria St.
Thanks Mark. Most probably
Any plans to make a similar series for the tower building? I've really enjoyed all your content so far. Thank you so much!
Top of my list if I can get permission.
Really enjoyed this series! Please do more on Blackpool
I've done loads already, there's more on the channel. I've done Pleasure Beach and Tramtown. Also filming a few more next month.
Epic stuff as usual and some of them photos ive never seen before! Manchester is meant to have an undeground network of tunnels, could be another venture to look at!
It does, but it's quite well documented and sealed off these days.
Thank you once more for a fascinating video, at 80 years old I can look back a lot further than most people, lost tunnels are Legion, there are so many of them in history. I worked at UMIST, where there was rumoured to be a tunnel underneath the railway viaduct, I myself saw evidence of this, but its existence is now denied by everybody. Building works did reveal evidence of a tunnel perhaps they were never followed up Martin. Has a UA-cam channel based in Manchester the name of which I can’t Remember, I do have some cognitive issues, but I couldn’t remember the distant past far clearer than I can what I did yesterday! I like you, find tunnels fascinating. Cheers, Peter
Thanks Peter
What a fantastic and entertaining video. This is premiere league material that is professional, well researched and so easy to watch that the time just evaporates. Excellent commentary, music, maps and structure. AdventureMe cold make anything interesting - even an old tunnel system, he is clearly made for this job and I intend to watch every video as the quality is of the highest level. What a delight to watch - many thanks for these excellent videos.👍
Thanks Marko
Great video again ,every probability they did exist, back at the time these tunnels could have been completed , there is a possibility the cut and cover system could have been used . It wa used on the London Underground its a thought
Thoroughly researched and a logical conclusion. I wonder why it's all being kept secret? Hope this video gets people talking. Been an interesting series. Thanks
Thanks Bob. They are saying for security reasons.
@@AdventureMe im sure during the conferences in the 70's/80's the IRA would have loved access, they used to check & seal all the drains in the areas of risk. so certain security officers will have known about them.
Excellent video about this alleged tunnel system. For the eye witness comments the one that stands out to me is Robyn Wilson's comment about the tunnel starting/coming up at Olympia. This would tie-in almost perfectly for a Sefton Street route.
My gut feel is for Sefton Street. Even though the street hasn't been there for 40 or so years there is still a strong memory for me of Sefton Street right back to the 50s and comments made by my father. Why else would it stick in my mind all those years...
Yeah Sefton St was my original theory.
Just fantastic..
Thanks Chris
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Works department have access to door 25, it's a store room, nothings ever been bricked up, still all original brickwork. I do enjoy these videos though, keep up the good work 👍
Glad I watched the original upload the other night although why their being secretive over door 25 I'd love to know
How interesting great vid
Thanks Daz
Oh oh, i'm holding back.
You have to understand everesing well.
Hm ,now you got me!!
I worked in Lewis's in the 70s and was told the tunnel between the Tower and Palace did exist but was sealed when Lewis's was built in the early 60s. It was later opened for some reason and after that Lewis's had a rodent problem. I didn't ever see the tunnel as it had been re sealed sadly, but it seems a good bet it did exist as it was a short distance between the 2 buildings. I would like to believe there was a tunnel to Winter Gardens too, great video.
Thanks Pete. The pictures at the beginning of my video when I'm covering the palace tunnel. They are pictures of that tunnel, taken a few years back.
Great video thanks. I have no doubt your theory is correct. I worked at whitehall Road power station in Leeds where so much of the city was linked by such tunnels. Otherwise thye would no way of providing power throughout.
It's rumoured that the Beatles used the tunel as an escape route after performing at the Winter Gardens, with every exit surrounded by fans, they managed to get out via the tower and on the road before anyone noticed
further to my recent post, the The channel I refer to is run by Martin zero, you can usually find it by searching UA-cam. Two of the building as you might like to look at that our interest are, the GMX Centre in Manchester, this used to be Manchester Central station. The other building is the Olympia exhibition halls in London, there is a labyrinth of tunnels underneath there. Thanks again for a fascinating channel, Peter
Yes I know Martin. We have done videos together on here. If you search through my videos, you will see us together.
This tunnel was still in use up to the mid 1970s to my knowledge, all sealed up now, but i am sure you can get access to film the sealed up entrances, Liverpool is a great place for underground history, they have tunnels everywhere!
Thanks. Liverpool this Sunday.
Hi pal. I live just outside Blackpool and am a paranormal Investigator. I've been looking for tunnels underneath the town for quite a while now, as would love to get down there. I have information on a tunnel under Blackpool, completely different from this one.
I used to work at winter gardens about 10 years ago, and I can confirm there is access to the cellars/basement from the kitchen of the Empress Grill. The few occasions I had to go down there were pretty spooky but I do remember there being an odd dead end that just stopped and looked like it had been filled in, this was in the direction of the tower so I always assumed that was from one of the tunnels that I used to hear of. Was nice to see this video, I had wondered if they still existed in full
Thanks Adam. Yes I agree
I’ve heard that there are tunnels and bunkers under the old town hall. I’ve been in the lower floors and they go down so many floors!
An accurate replay.
There’s an extensive tunnel network under Fleetwood, for I expect less nefarious purposes, typically transporting cattle.
The entrances are
1) at the rear of the mount, bricked up - left side of Gate Lodge on Mount Rd, opposite London St.
2) underneath the Euston Hotel, in what I believe is now a gym - also bricked up.
3) in a raised bank? somewhere towards Rossall school.
Someone I know who’s been in the tunnels said there’s holding pens down there and it’s vast. Easy to get lost.
I was also told of a tunnel under Bourne Hill, nr ICI, where the old farmhouse used to sit - now demolished and next to a mini roundabout and pub.
I thought it was Roman origin, because it went in the direction on the old Roman road and port at Rossall Point, but now I wonder if it was actually part of the cattle tunnel network. It would make more sense.
Thanks mate
@@AdventureMe very welcome mate 👍
Really enjoyed these videos Darren .It's a shame that modern buildings destroyed a lot of our historic secrets. Not only in Blackpool but in every city. Pity the powers that be didn't log these things or take photos of them before destroying our heritage.
Of course they didn't want photos.
They deliberately destroyed our history to HIDE many things, like free energy.
The last thing they wanted was evidence
I’ve worked at winter gardens several times, usually with the Rebellion punk music show. One year we were waiting for a truck that was stuck on the motorway and got bored, decided to go for a wander and found our way into the basement - lots of bricked up doorways and paved over trapdoors - there definitely were tunnels but they’re not all accessible any more, unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing!
rather interesting points (sherlock)edwards lol
Thanks Chris
There are tunnels all over the town, there was one from the masonic hall to central station via the courts.
As a warehouseman at Blackpool tower over 40 years ago I've spent a lot if time in the Blackpool tower warehouse and tunnels did exist.
There was another tunnel under what was bargain hunters on Talbot Road which would flood on high tide.
I used to work in the winter gardens in the early eighties. I've been every inch of that building and the warehouse you mentioned. The boss was called Paddy and the supervisor was called Dave , both of them had worked there decades and were both legends of the winter garden and both laughed if you ever mentioned it and said it was fairy tales that's all, the rumours all stem from a function when both building were hired by the same people and how they had to carry the food between building
There are tunnels under most towns in most of the world.
Your indoctrinated closed minded boss knew nothing.
They have been used for many evil things like ch1ld tr@fficking
I have watched the original on Sunday and today's a shame that some had to be cut out like Door 25 we all like to know what is behind that door but we will never know. Like I mentioned on Sunday if you signed a confidentiality paper then you have to agree to their request but a good series overall
I'll Google what used to be on the site of the tower before it was built, I always wondered that lol 👍
I'll cover it in my videos one day soon.
@@AdventureMe no worries, just always been curious about that 👍
Me too message me if you know what was there before the tower 🤔
I think I know which part was taken out even before I've watched all of it!
Which?
The tunnel behind door 25
It wouldn't surprise if there were tunnels connecting them as well as others (probably blocked off). Every city and large towns has them.
#25 forever in my head.
Please get in touch I have a lot more information about the tunnels you might be interested in 👍
Thanks Andy. darren@adventureme.co.uk
The principal issue with tunnels of any length is ventilation. With a relatively short tunnel, maybe 100 metres or so, this won't be a particular issue. But much longer and there will be the problem of the build up of fetid air which can become dangerous.
i dont think these tunnel theorists realise the cost and logistics of building a tunnel from the tower to the winter gardens would have cost more than the tower
The tunnels in question are fire tunnels used by security staff for quick access to various areas👍
I'm going with Darren on this one. 👍🏻 and Occam's Razor.
Good choice!
@@AdventureMe I don't see anyone else doing weeks of research, hours of filming and editing. That's what I love about investigative journalism. You can bet your last pound on it being honest. It's too much hard work to bother with otherwise. Would love to see you go down this route, Darren. Who knows how many mysteries exist across this country, right next to us, under our feet, or around the corner. Please feel free to throw a brick with a note on it through my window, if you are ever looking for research assistants. It would be fascinating, Captain. 😉 Thank you for all your entertaining work.
@@stevenmacdonald9619 Thanks Steven. That's my plan. I have a few deep documentaries in mind for the future. Where are you based?
@@AdventureMe Blackpool, but I'm also mobile at a moment's notice, and well experienced with travel, including licences for 16 to as many seats as you can squeeze onto a double-decker bus, or 15 metre coach. Born a couple of miles from the source of the Mersey in Wythenshawe, but like you, whether I'm taking in thousands of years next to the Ouse, or shimmying around the side of Loch Lomond, or Coniston Water, I love every inch of our beautiful island, and our history. Even when you visited Southsea, I was the one tracking Common back to the law Queen Victoria laid down, that no person could own, or build upon that named 'Commoners land'. It's hilarious when trying to play golf on Wimbledon Common course. You have to stop play every time someone crosses your hole with their dogs. It's the law, they have right of way. Southsea just happened to be part of where I took National Express training on the London Victoria to Southsea Hovercraft exchange. Like every drink ever bought in a pub.... I've been a-round 🙈 Ok, I don't do comedy. Between you and Martin Zero, you both make me want to go outside and find what has been hidden in plain sight for so long, that we are in danger of losing.
it wasnt aware house in tower street it was workshops for the tower and winter gardens contained joiners , plumbers, engineers, furniture repairs, signshop sprayshop and stores for materials for the said trades
Yeah it was known as the BTC warehouse
Thank you fot a great film. In my opinion I can well believe the tunnels were real and I bet even today the tower or the Winter gardens have evidence they exist. But what I cannot understand is why the security risk. I know for security reasons I will never find out.
Glad you enjoyed it
My great grandad was a Commissionaire for the Tower Company for over 50 years starting at The Palace Theatre then moving to the Winter Gardens. I'd love to show you a photo of him opening the car door for Field Marshall Montgomery around 1948 outside the WG but can't on here.
Thanks mate. Feel free to email darren@adventureme.co.uk
@@AdventureMe sent
@@towerpower6867 Great photo mate. Thanks for showing me it.
@@AdventureMe much treasured.
Umm spooky tunnels very interesting.
Do you know anything about an underground storage unit for trams in little bispham before there current location, i dont know what its used for now, if anything.
Thanks for the info
I don't no. Maybe one day.
There was a tram depot at street level in Bispham where Sainsbury's is on red bank Rd. At little Bispham there is a turning circle for trams terminating there.
There was an underground boat storage place at anchorsholme which kept flooding and has now been filled in.
Can't imagine what was in the first video that could possibly constitute a "security risk". They're hiding something.
Was there a tunnel under the prom, from the old Clifton hotel to the Metropol hotel?
Possibly. But no evidence yet
well you need to convince the know it all David wall does our heads in
He has a strong opinion doesn't he.
@@AdventureMe Do you have a fb group too, i would leave his group straight away if you had one, as i am sure others would too
petition to know what is behind door 25 :)
I thought it was re-uploaded because of the sound dropouts.
No. Nothing I can do about those. I think I had a dodgy cable.
Shame you had to edit the original but needs must. BTW saw the original 😱🤣
#25🤫
You need to ask about the mirrored off box seating in the circus, its because a lift weight crashed through it many years ago, go figure👍
👍
The tunnel from the Tower to the old Alhambra still exists.
There are no marks on the right hand side of the wall to show any spur to the Winter Gardens I’m afraid. (You used my pictures - a shame you didn’t use the long shot showing this)
I’ve spent hours under the Tower looking for any possible tunnel. There isn’t one. Just the one I photographed which still runs right under the street to the old Alhambra.
Brilliant. I didn't realise that was actually it. It was supposed to be a representation of it.
so correct every thing else is rubbish
They do exist my mates found it and were spraying fire extinguishers before doing a runner about 30 year ago they said they got in through the old car park lol 😂
I used to work there nights and spent lots of time under there...
It was bad enough through the day.
I believe there were tunnels, under Victoria st.
Did you have to take out that "Door" with a "Number" on it???
Yes and some other bits
I work there. The original way down has been bricked off. There's no other routes apart from world war bunker which is flooded
I think you're talking about the Opera House tunnel, different one.
I worked in the tunnels in 1997 , we worked nights and i never saw anything under there, no ghosts at all so its all crap when the did most haunted ,, i know i throw the light bulb :)
Yeah I remember the light bulb throwing lol
there are lots of tunnels on the wirral that have passed you by......
#25
Someone needs to explore the door they won't discuss. Just because some govt decided to make it secret doesn't make it right.
I've worked in both buildings, never went explicitly looking for tunnels, have never seen them either but I have heard they exist/ existed.
Today they'd be fairly useless sadly.
Thanks for watching
Why did they build tunnels?
I explain in the video. Mainly for carrying utility cables and passage.
Actually it’s blackpool tower that has the tunnels.
Technically they both do, this video is about the tunnel linking between both.
@@AdventureMe You need to talk to PT vlogs uk on here. He worked there once he will tell you.
sorry no tunnels
@@davidrichardson3894 There are. Just ask PTvlogs uk.
I can understand the reluctance to confirm the tunnel layout for security issues. After 'Brighton' when political conferences were held at the winter gardens they used to even seal up all the man holes ect around the building. If WG wants to bring back more of this business it needs to be secure. Shame, because I really like these type of videos......
Yes that's true. I get why, it just spoils the evidence.
when they deny them it, as said seems more due to a secuity risk (as said) as same reason you cut a part out of the video. of folks kew of the tunnels position (realistically whats to stop them finding it anyway) they could be used as a break-in weak spot due to the exits/enterencies actually connected via maybe a unsecured doorway into a building. now that some stuffs been pulled down and rebuilt on (somewhat demolishing the tunnels/exits to said buildings in part), its time (and some ex employees have) come clean and admit their existence...no harm (not much thesedays) in letting the secret out now as most the stuff that was in use is demolished along with said exits/enterancies of tunnel systems.
and, lol....'most haunted'....most faked more like, "its a bad one"....yeah i can see the acting is bad lol.
It was entertaining at least. I used to watch it to spot all the mistakes lol
@@AdventureMe i never could do with the show and their fake reactions & noticible acting lol. its basic fraud and con mercant activity that should only be viwed soley as entertainment on telly, and not to be taken serious where financies change hands...and thats often happened with them. yvett fielding has also conned her way into the 'paranormal' conferencies on the financial take.
100% percent there definitely was a tunnel in blackpool Tower to Winter gardens
A tunnel may not be certain, but one thing is. Blackpool is still a dump.
Ruined it with the reupload. I feel you're hiding something. Lost the value Darren.
I'm not a fan of re-uploading videos, but I had no choice. I didn't want to do it.
A lot of people in the town talk 💩 💩 the tunnel thing is a myth
I worked with a guy that worked at the empress on egerton Square and he said there were tunnels that went on for a long way but he didn't go that far down it as he only had a cigarette lighter and didn't want to risk going all the way also there is a tunnel that leads from the imperial Hotel and runs under where North shore diy is which at the back had to be filled in and it was very deep down joe in the shop will tell you about how they had to fill it in, I also have a friend who worked on a church property just at the back of promenade now does food for homeless and he said there are tunnels there he wanted to explore they were hidden behind wooden doors
Thanks mate
@@AdventureMe hi mate did you see the underground tunnels thing online about blackpool? They say it forms a pentagram star and it's from cenotaph to raikes and tower etc.
@AdventureMe so sorry mate I've only just seen your reply from what seems like an age ago yeh I've heard of the tunnels and as I've mentioned before my mate can vouch for a tunnel they had to fill from the imperial hotel and cut under where his place is now, there's a lot more to this than you can imagine there's tunnels all over the country infact worldwide ive only just over last 3 years started on my journey and watching many videos that are confirming them, once again sorry for such a late reply
