brilliant video! and you cover exactly what I wanted to know about decaf speciality. Thanks
Thank you for watching!
brilliant as ever - I really look forward to you roasting coffee!!!
Thank you very much. I’m very excited myself. It is a tricky thing though, especially if you want to do it right.
Decaf LOOKS much darker across the board. Has to do with the structure of the bean after the decaffeination process, so looks different during roasting. Learned this recently!
Also, check out Blossom Coffee Roasters - Decaf Ethiopia Sidamo. Favorite Decaf so far. Blueberry / Graham Cracker notes
Interesting. It makes sense. Thank you for recommendations!
The sugarcane process increases acidity which is why your stomach may be doing what it's doing.
I've tried a few decafs lately and have really enjoyed them, especially the acidity as brings out the fruity notes.
I haven't tried it yet, but I really want to try Manhattan's Nordic light decaf line. It's probably much cheaper for you to buy it in Europe than it is for me in the US. Try it out!
I will give it a go. Thanks again for recommending
Great video, as always (you come across as a top bloke and you bring a more relatable perspective of the world of coffee compared to other UA-camrs). Welcome to the decaf side! For people like me who love coffee, but unfortunately can only drink 1 cup a day (guaranteed no sleep if I drink it after noon) these decaf techniques are god sent - the flavour is very close to the real thing and almost indistinguishable with milky drinks. As someone has already mentioned, decaf beans are dark in appearance, but not necessarily in roast level.
Thank you for watching and your kind words! I have to say, since this video, I have a decaf flat white most of my evenings.
Another great video Jack. You're very entertaining , funny and a pleasure to watch
BTW do you still have your Sage Barista express or did you get rid of it during your upgrades?
Thank you very much. I sold my BE long time ago. Great entry lv machine to play with.
Wonderful topic! I've always meant to explore decaf but I always change my mind at the last second
Thank you. Still plenty left to explore though. Do you have a favourite decaf yourself?
Get some regular coffee and then get some extra decaf coffee, now you can have your coffee, and then have MORE coffee later :D If it's NOT great, you can blend the regular coffee with decaf and make it better that way, you can make 2 coffees in a row, now you got the same amount of caffeine you normally get and hopefully enjoyed the 2 coffees.
This was very cool to see. I just bought some swiss water process decaf from blue bottle coffee recently!
Thank you for watching! Are you a regular decaf drinker? How was that coffee from Blue Bottle?
@@mycoffeeshow111 I am usually a non-decaf drinker but since I started a new job recently I now drink decaf in the evenings when I get home! I enjoyed the blue bottle decaf but have not tried other decaf coffees so I don't know if it was good compared to other beans. It was called 'Night Light decaf'
Another good video Jack. I used to only drink decaf for medical reasons, so tried a few. My favourite at the time was Decadent decaf. They are a UK based roaster who only roast decafs. I haven’t tried them for a few years, but they seem to be going from strength to strength (without the caffeine).
Thank you! Never heard about them. Will have to check it.
Great show, very funny as always
Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for this great video. After years of Illy I too have tried 3 decafs in the last 14 days ... (CO2 method). So far Catuai, Mundo Novo/Brasil seems to be the winner as far as decaf goes - more chocolate with less fruty notes ... Never imagined, decaf could actually taste good but completely agree with you. Loooking forward to your next tests :)
Thank you very much. Yeah, it was a surprise to me how tasty they can be. You are another person who mentioned C02 method- will have to check it next time.
Hi, newer to the channel, my favorite Decaf coffee so far was HAYB Colombia Condor. They say it tastes like an Ethiopian coffee - it was super juicy and fruity. Not espresso though, and I might be biased since they gave me the whole bag for free at Czech Barista of the year 2024 😅
Hi, thx for sharing! I tried few bags of Hayb when visiting Poland, but never their decaf. I am too much of a caffeine junky 😛
You sir are a brave man! I never got any flavour from decaf at all, and never had the inclination to try decaf beans. But fun, informative content as always.
Thank you very much. I was very surprised indeed. Some decafs are at least drinkable and some can be even tasy. Since I have recorded this video, every evening I have a decaf flat white.
Never tried decaf before, but I will now 🙂
You might be surprised
I think Sugar Cane Decaf is like a nice natural sounding name for the Ethyl Acetate decaffeination, which is not so nice sounding. But I don't think it's unhealthy... hopefully. I found most if not all the Sugar Cane / E.A. Decaf ones I got were very acidic, you need to have a bit more control over how you brew it (higher temperature on your espresso machine, or longer extraction etc) to reduce that acidity and make it better, it's trickier. Although maybe you found some better ones. The last one didn't seem to bother your stomach or by then it might have been compensated for by your body already.
You are probably right about that name. In fact, when buying the coffee from Square Mile I only noticed Ethyl Acetate on the label and thought that is a different method than sugar cane. Later I found out it is the same process.
I drink so much coffee every day, at least 4 shots on top of pour over or 2 and never had any stomach reaction.
Overall I am very surprised how good can decaf be.
I had a sugar cane decaf from Yenny Bermudez via Harmony roasters and it was incredible for a decaf!
Thx for sharing! Do you have it as a straight shot or something more fancy?
Can confirm;
One of the best coffee’s I’ve ever had, let alone decaf.
@@adamg.manning6088 will have to check that one
@@mycoffeeshow111
It’s long gone, but I had it roasted by Horsham (my local) and Harmony are excellent too.
@@adamg.manning6088 thx for sharing
I'm a new viewer of this small but interesting coffee channel. Do you ever blink though?
Welcome! Hahaha, nope I don’t have eyelids. You are the first who spotted it 😛
@@mycoffeeshow111 😀😀😀
I am currently trying to find a decaf I like for my evening coffee as I struggle to sleep letalone adding caffeine into the mix - I'm glad you feel the same about the Horsham Peru as I'm 3/4 way through a bag and found it really bland via a v60, but bareble as a flatwhite/cappuccino. I have the Columbian as my next bag, so I have higher hopes for that after your experience
That Columbian is very tasty as a straight shot, and works well with oat milk as well. Even my wife enjoys it. As for Peru, I used it to practice shots with my new Unibasket 😁
BTW, it must be psychosomatic but sometimes I can still feel energised after a cup of decaf in the evening
@@mycoffeeshow111 so I'm not the only one who feels energized...
@@erikngomez it must be something like placebo effect
A bit hard to find, but you should also try some Laurina beans, which are naturally low caffeine
Thx. I haven’t heard about that That is a variety of coffee? Apart from being low in caffeine, does it have any specific flavour notes?
@@mycoffeeshow111 yup it's a variety! The one I tried had some nice nuttiness and vanilla, a bit of chocolate.
@@lowfuel6089 thank you!
Can you try to taste decaf with filter next time?
If there is enough interest in this subject I can definitely do more. Would like to find light roast decaf as well.
What decent profile you was using?
Hmmm, it was long time ago so can’t be sure but my favourite is Damian’s LM Leva so possibly it was that one.
You're suggesting by your reaction that a HONEY PROCESSED coffee would produce the best decaf - right?
That is a relatively old video and I don’t remember exactly. Obviously taste is a very subjective thing but in general I enjoy funky flavours in my cup that natural or honey processed coffee offers.
It doesn’t cost me anything to press like
Thank you! Great statement. 100% agree 😁
I didn’t realise that decaf coffee had adverse effects on the stomach
Maybe it is just me. Some sort of acid reflux.
Decaf is like kissing your sister - i'll do without coffee in the after hours then, or just miss my "beauty" sleep..
Hahaha. It is not that bad- she is a good kisser 😛
The extra steps to also get rid of the caffeine is not for me. I'm sure they can taste fine compared to cheap decaf options ppl are used to.
@@Hemshemsems completely understand. Obviously, I do prefer coffee full of caffeine but still was surprised with those speciality decafs.
