- ABOUT THE LESSON 📚
In case you haven't heard, there's a presidential election coming up in the United States. Donald Trump and the Republicans are squaring off against Joe Biden and the Democrats. The stakes are high and there's sure to be a lot of drama leading up to election day.
Therefore, I want to teach you some useful words to help you better understand the US election, especially how it works. Because presidential elections in the US are a bit different, and the way it works may even seem a bit strange.
And of course, at the end of the lesson, I hope you cast your ballot and let me know who you would vote for in the upcoming election - Trump or Biden?
Here are the words and phrases from the lesson in case you would like to review. I have also included their meaning.

2) two-party-system - when two parties dominate politics
3) independent - a voter who is not registered with a political party

9) winner-take-all - all the votes from one state will go to the candidate who wins
10) partisan - strongly supporting a person or party without considering the matter carefully
11) amend - to change or alter something
12) red state - state that strongly supports Republicans
13) blue state - state that strongly supports Democrats
14) purple state - state with a mix of Democrat and Republican support
15) swing state - state whose votes could go to either the Democrats or Republicans
16) battleground state - means the same as swing state
17) lean left - state that is more likely to vote for the Democrats
18) lean right - state that is more likely to vote for the Republicans

27) rigged - to dishonestly arrange something to achieve a desired outcome

That's great! Glad you enjoyed the lesson. 👍
Another great lesson, Wes! Let's keep that in mind: the ballot is stronger than the bullet (Abraham Lincoln) ☺
That's true. Thanks for commenting & sharing with us. 😃
Lincoln was killed by a bullet. He was a Republican. The Democrats created the KKK. A white supremacist endorsed Biden. He has friends of that terrorists group KKK. As you know Trump has declared KKK and Antifa terrorists groups.
I hope a fair election without frauds.
😃Thanks a bunch for this informative n advance vocabulary lesson❤️. It is great cuz you are a great teacher❤️
God bless🙏🏻
Good vibes 😃
Thank you Rose! 😃
Great lesson! Finally, I understand what the electoral collage means and how it works! And if I were American, I'd vote for Biden too.
Hi Anna. Thanks for commenting & sharing your opinion. 😊 👍
Многие русские здесь раньше за демократов голосовали, но после того как демократы позволили магазины громить и лили слезы на коленях перед гробом черного бандита, многие мои знакомые собираются за республиканцев голосовать.
Dream a little dream..
@@InteractiveEng I always keep up with the US elections. I probably know more about US elections than The average north american citizen. Biden will win. Not because his popularity. He is definitely weak. But because of Trump rejection. Biden is leading in a lot of swing states, for instance, Michigan (it used to be Democract before Trump victory there in 2016) Penysilvania (same applies to Penny. Last time a republican won there before Trump it was in 1988). Virginia (which used to be a swing state, but now it's clear leaning to democrates). Texas is a great surprise. It can turn blue after so many years. Arizona as well. So Trump is in a very tough position even if he manage to win Florida and Ohio. There won't be enough delegates to be reelected. So, as I see it, it will be an easy victory for Biden. Not too early to call. Unfortunately Biden is too far right wing for me as I am VERY LIBERAL.
Fortunatly you aren't american, Biden and his son took money corrupted from communist China, they will be in jail a day.FBI is investigating about that corruption
It's so much informative! thanks for the great class.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much. I had been looking for a video on US Elections and the related words for a long time. Thanks one more time for the clear-cut explanation.
Well, I bet on Joe Biden.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting. 👍
Be independent, Wes. Never compromise on your independence. 😊😊😊
That's right. 👍
Words can't describe how glad i feel while watching your video. Thanks you so much 🙏
Glad to hear that. Thanks for checking out the lesson. 😊
This was actually a very good video. I am not much involved with politics just for my own well-being and so sometimes when these words come up I am just not familiar with any of them. Very thoughtful and timely video. Thank you so much
Thanks so much! Glad you liked the lesson. 👍
Thank you so much it will help me to speak softly.
Thanks for commenting & checking out the lesson. 😊
Shalom Wes and everyone here.
However I often say that I am apolitical, I like to be on the agenda for sure.
I loved it, it was a great policy lesson that everyone should know about. Thank you very much.
I'm not from the country, but if I had to vote, I'd have to find out more about the candidates, but I'm very much into the well-being of citizens and the country.
Anyway, I liked to know your opinion and who you're voting for. My best wishes for a very positive growth and for the country as well.
We are in it to win it as a human being. Lets hope for the best only, and may God bless you all.
A Big hello from UK.

Glad you liked it!! Thanks for commenting & checking out the lesson. 👍
Your excellent vocabulary explanation is valid for many countries, with the exception of the electoral college, in most democracies, the one who wins makes it with the popular vote.
Great lesson. Refreshable. Thank you .

Glad the lesson was easy to follow. 👍
useful and very good video >>>please complete debates in coming videos thanks from CAIRO / EGYPT
Glad you enjoyed the lesson. 😊
You did a really good job explaining a complex topic esp the electoral college. I have a degree in American Government and a Masters in Public Policy but don't think I could explain it as well as you did. Especially remaining objective. Only issue I might have included is that the Electoral College is controversial because people in populous States feel their votes are "watered down" but people in rural states don't want it to go away because they feel it "levels the playing field". The founders of the United States were very concerned about the "tyranny of the majority" and the big states (NY and VA at the time) "steamrolling" the smaller states. The structure of the US government was set up on purpose to prevent that. But that might be better explained in a US Government class rather than basic US voting phrases.
Thank you for the lesson. I have been living in the US for awhile But never understood the US election system until you explained it. The college electoral vote thing is very confusing and has nothing to do with college as the name indicated.
On the subject of who one would vote for,,,,i wish we had better choices. I scratched my head when Joe won the nomination from his party....I don’t get it. There were so many young and talented candidates in the race. Maybe one day you will help us understand of delegation and how the selection process works within the party. Thank you!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the lesson. 😊
One of the best lessons!!
Thanks so much! Glad the lesson was helpful. 😃

You are very welcome. Glad you enjoyed the lesson. 😃
I totally agree with you! I consider both Biden and Trump are bad options. So, if I were American I would be independent.
On the other hand, I think it is important to understand the US Presidential Election because its results affect the entire world.
Thanks for that wonderful explanation!
Thanks for commenting & sharing with us. 👍

Thank you so much! Clear, plain, detailed and interesting lesson about the USA 2020 elections I do love! I am showing this great video to all my classes at High School in Italy to teach them about Citizenship during my English lessons...by the way my vote goes to Biden fingers crossed!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting topic for learn
Thanks Lucia! 😊
Great lesson Wes, thanks for that. Our world still has too many dictators, wars, greedy people and people who put themselves above the law. We need politicians who can lead, who also see the poverty of the people and the problems of the earth. Nowhere in the world do we need people in politics who preach hatred and violence and are only interested in power and money. If I could vote I would vote for Biden, that’s for sure.👍🙋🏼♀️
Thanks for commenting & sharing with us Rita. 😃
Here from Brazil _just like you ,I don"t like election, hate politicians .taking my country as an exemple ,you know what I mean . Falou aí , valeu.
Thanks for checking out the lesson & sharing with us. 👍
Great lesson
Thanks so much Silvio. 👍
When I watch ( America got talent) I don’t understand many of the jokes or the comments said by the participants or the judges even though I understand most of your lessons and I live in the USA since 7 years
So I feel the frustration because of that.. please try to help , I don’t know how but probably you know, thanks 🙏
No worries, 7 years is nothing, at least 10 years or more to understand the system. I have been living in the US for so much longer and have college education and yet still don’t understand Americans jokes and humor. It takes time to understand the background, culture and history which jokes usually imply to.
Great.
Thanks for commenting & checking out the lesson. 👍
Which one on you great teacher ?
Amazing
Thanks so much for commenting & sharing with us. 👍
American politics is so complicated, a 15 minute video doesn't even scratch the surface 🤣🤣🤣
I hope Biden, but result could be the opposite. Thank you for this video. It's very organized.
Thanks for commenting & checking out the lesson. 👍
I agree with you Wes. I don't like the Electrical College. If my vote doesn't count then why should I vote? I wonder what can people do to change this law.
It's a weird situation. Of course, there are many state issues on each ballot so it's important that everyone vote. But when it comes to the choosing the president, the winner-take-all approach is a problem. 😃
Thanx for the lesson. Now I understand better the politics in the US. I think, if I were an American, I'd support Biden but this is only external point of view. I already have to deal with politics in my country (Switrerlans), which is very different. We have a lot of different parties! 😜
Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Thanks for commenting & sharing with us. 👍
"campaign costs a lot of money" brazilians: Yeah, I know that
hmm, could you explain this joke ple
Uma brasileira 😂💕💕
Thank you Wes. Very interesting as always. I would not vote any of the candidates....
Glad you enjoyed the lesson. 👍
I've heard that, people have been fleeing California because of several issues, and moving to other states, specially Texas. Maybe Texas could be the most populated state in the US in the future.
That's true. People have been leaving California. The state faces a lot of challenges, even now with the forest fires.
Because California is run by the democratic party and weak and corrupt leaders
Namaste! 🙏 America ✌️
Love your channel. Well, I think your election system is 95% perfect. I'm from Thailand, we count every vote directly to elect representatives which dictates who's gonna form the cabinet. Bad...vote buying is rampant... destroying the system. American system almost completely makes buying vote futile. Also it's been working well for two hundred years. The government is stable and could be working properly. Why change and bring about newer issues?
American founding fathers are genius
i am from India. Voters are registered, you say, with either of the two parties and also as independents. Who prepares these three lists?
When you register to vote, you can select if you want to be affiliated with a political party. If you don't chose one of the parties, you may be considered an independent. 👍
