- More "I'm no expert" tips. Please do this at your own risk. Comments are related to my specific problem dealing with a broken latch on a 2008 Honda Odyssey and what I did to remove it and repair it. Presently, the latch repair is working great.
Thank you for taking the time to show how you got it released plus showing your clever repair. This broken latch got me clueless on how to release the compartment without braking it loose.
An outstanding video. I followed your directions and even installed a nail into the mechanism like you suggested.... Works like a charm. Thank you so much
This method worked great. Saved money and it took less than an hour. I did the nail repair and it now opens like a charm again.
Outstanding fix! Hats off to you, mine is now working great. My wife had an appointment with the dealer we just canceled. When plastic and metal meet in a moving part it will not last long. This Honda part is a bad design.
I did what you did. Drilling was easy once I made a divot with a heated awl so the drill bit wouldn’t drift from center. I used a aluminum trim nail which worked good. Thanks for the Video.
Awesome! Worked perfectly for my 2006 Odyssey. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful fix! Thank you so much for sharing your ingenuity. I too, used a small nail, drilled a slightly smaller hole, then heated the nail and pushed it in. I then cut the nail off to the right length, with a Dremel and a cut-off wheel. Works perfect!
Thanks! I had the same problem with my 2007 Odyssey. This solution worked great! Thanks for sharing.
Pretty ingenious. Kudos to you.
Did this fix today and works great! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, mine is still going strong after a year.
Great workaround! Thanks!
Thanks a ton! This took three minutes of tinkering to get it open and ten minutes getting the nail cut just right. I drilled the hole slightly smaller than the nail, then heated the nail on the stove so that it melted the plastic as I inserted it into the hole. Perfect fit, no epoxy necessary. Awesome fix and saved me 750$ the dealership quoted.... That was as long as they did not break a part on the dashboard... then it would have been about 2000....
I just did this on our stuck Odyssey glove box, and it worked perfectly! I used a very small screw instead of a nail, as I didn't have any strong glue to secure a nail. It makes a little "ratchety" sound, as the bar rubs across the threads of the screw, but I suppose they will wear down and smooth out in time, as we continue to open & close the glove box. I could try to file the threads down some, but that would require me to back the screw out, and possibly make the drilled hole larger. Anyway, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting this video! You saved me $70-80!!
Thanks for posting this! This helped me open the the glove compartment on my daughter's Honda Element. I would have probably done some major damage had I not found your video. I am planning to try the nail idea. I agree with the one of the other comments that there should have been a recall on this issue....it is apparently a very common issue. Using plastic for something with this kind of tension on it is just not a great design. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video. You saved me a lot of time, frustration and money.
Standard for Honda to use plastic to do a job for something metallic!
Good job dude. Saved me there.
Worked great - thanks again - a couple comments that might help others
1) a wood shim worked well to pry open a space without damaging the glove box (recommend cutting off the first inch of the shim
2) visualize sliding the small screw driver across the undersize of the top part of the locking mechanism (ie you small flat head screw driver should be tilting up when you are doing this)
thanks to your video my glove box is fixed...great video..thanks for posting.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your video including the problem and useful solution!! It is obvious that you have had many other appreciative Odyssey owners. One small piece of plastic prevented me from getting to my wallet for one week but your video guided me to a "happy reunion." Thanks again! I echo the sentiments of countless others in my gratefulness for saving money. I will NOT even say how much HONDA wanted to charge me to fix it! YIKES!
Excellent info. Just offering how to unlatch the thing saved me time and possibly breaking something in the process. I opted for the insertion of a custom designed piece of galvanized sheet metal that was drilled out to fit the steel pin that holds the latch and then fits tightly within the latch. This works like a charm but isn't as easy as suggested here. I didn't trust that the disabled person who will be using this latch for the glove compartment would be very easy with pulling it after my fix, so I went with a heavier duty repair. The repair here should be fine for most users non-abusers of latches.
It took me about 45 minutes from when I hit play on the video, until I had the lock fixed and reinstalled in 08 odyssey with the nail in place. Perfect tutorial! Thanks.
I'm impressed with peoples' (your) ingenuity. Thanks for sharing, so the rest of us can get our glove boxes opened, and fixed without it costing us an arm and a leg.

Thanks man, this helped me a ton!!
Thanks!!!!! The same problem I had. You saved me hours and I am sure I would have about broken the glove compartment by the time I would be done with it. I am going to try to super glue the broken pin back in but if that doesn't work I and guy to try your nail suggestion. That looks much more sturdy.
Excellent video and information! Thank you for posting... Within 5-minutes of seeing the video, I had the glove box open and have since repaired the glove box latch as shown in the video.
Great advice. I had the same problem and your solution worked for me as well. Thank you.
Thanks, seems to be a common problem with this lock.
Hey man this is the best video I've ever watched, thank you SO MUCH! You inspire me bro!😂 did exactly what you said and now I fixed my parents car. Much love❤✊✌
Great post... the dealer wanted $350 and it cost me a nail and a few drops of epoxy.
Glad it helped, the fix is probably stronger than an OEM replacement
my 07 accord has the same problem lot's of folks are dealing with these locks. I use the small screw driver to open it, when I need to. Someday I will pull out the lock (not easy) and try to fix it. Maybe I can use your method. Thanks, this should be a recall.
I feel great! I followed step by step what you did and awesome! I did it! Apparently some people here accomplished it in 10min. it took me about 2hrs., all the same I'm done I did it! With your help of course, thank you again.
Thank you! This worked great on my 08 Odyssey!!
Thank you! I finally got my glovebox onened in 5 seconds after watching this video. I also used the nail idea. Thanks!
You just saved me the $600 Honda was trying to charge me. I know other folks with the same issue. There should be a recall on it. Thanks for the video!
It will never happen. Honda is too cheap!
Thanks loads, this worked well for me too - including the brad epoxied into the plastic.
Thanks a lot. Excellent info.
Thanks! I was about to force it open. Great Video. (I used a tiny screw instead, and ground the head off) :)
Worked for me as well, thanks a ton!
I have always been able to fix my way out of everything using a MacGyver solution. Hats off to you, I'm impressed. It is a great solution and worked just as you said.
Great! I find this -after- taking a hacksaw to the latch bar above the glove box. I assumed I could replace that bar and try to fix the lock.. Looks like the bar is welded in place. Don't do what I did!
My metal bar that you push down to open broke so I'm kinda stuck on how to get mine to open
thanks a lot I was able to get my G.box open so thank you.
Thank you for sharing the video! The dealship quoted $29.95 for the part. Is there a better price out there? I'm having trouble finding the assembly online without the entire glove box.
You may want to check local junk yards
How do I know if it's compressor clutch?
Fix still working great
Not sure how to replace the key cylinder in my Odyssey Van... The latch broke and the dealer wanted $375.00 to replace it but the freaking part only cost $29.50 so I decided to do it myself.. However, I can't figure out how to take the cylinder in which the key goes into OUT of the old part and replace it into the NEW key latch.. Does anyone know how to do that?
Still working great!
What about if that bar it's boken?
Thank you!
Sorry, I just did the repair and did not remove the cylinder
This did not work. Any other ideas?
You should've shown people how to open while still
attached to glove department
Get a new glove box at the junk yard much cheaper
