Helpful video! I’m doing drums on this exact model right now. The self adjustor explanation was helpful thank you. You need the shoes pulled all the way in to get the rotor back on. My echo is 2003 and the brake line was rusted shut. One way to get the wheel cylinder off the brake line is to unscrew the cylinder itself instead of unscrewing the brake line and stripping the nut. Flare wrench worked wonderfully to hold brake line in place. Vice grip the wheel cylinder and carefully spin. Helps to remove the bleeder stem. You can also put a thin layer of anti-seize on all the brake contact points to the backing plate. I would def get yourself drum brake tools because those springs are a pain if it’s your first time. I wish you showed the brake bleeding part. Did the gravity feed work?

In the shops in my younger years I just R&R transmissions engines and transfer cases ect. I much rather do a transmission clutch replace than a drum break job.
My handbrake warning light came on after doing this procedure. Wheel spins by hand a couple times as mentioned. Helped auto adjuster by braking while in reverse. Brake fluid and pressure is good. Handbrake stops wheel good. No leaks. Only thing I can think of is the handbrake itself seems slightly soft to pull up. Any advice? Thanks UPDATE: Disconnected and reconnected negative battery terminal and now handbrake light works as normal.
Hey brother, I wanna thank you for this video. My late mechanic (as in not my mechanic anymore) screwed my rear brakes up on my 2001 ECHO. I could never find a video that matched up to these drum brakes until now...your video. I will now go back in the garage one day and straighten his mess up. To give you an example of a bad mechanic on drugs...he also cost me two drive axles before I discovered the fact that he didnt torque down the axle nut. I had a third axle going bad and I went out with my torque wrench to check if it had the proper torque. The nut wouldnt tighten up as it was stripped. A new nut properly torqued and the axle is still going strong. He did well, but then got on drugs and cost me. Say no to drugs folks! They mess your life up.

Toyota repair manual doesn't show this in my Toyota echo, 2005 model, 5 door sedan, best design by Toyota, the manual has the old type of manual brake adjusting system, your video makes sense for me, was been searching for almost 2 months, hope so many will be looking for this, but you make my dreams come true, subscribed to your channel, thank you.

Hey appreciate the video as I am in process of doing brakes all around on my 2002 toyota echo .. in ontario canada they use lots of salt on thr roads in winter . All my brake lines are corroded and need repair which I am learning as I go. Do you know what the line is called that connects from the hose to the rear wheel cylinder. The one you so easily took off with a 10mm lol. Both mine leak and will not come off. I will need to replace or fabricate my own I guess . Thanks
Soft pedal is usually caused by an hydraulic problem, leaking fluid from one of the parts that the fluid go's threw or a failed brake master cylinder....Normally if your rear drum bakes are worn it will cause low braking power but not necessarily a soft or spongy pedal.
have you ever done these and you cant get the drum on the adjust is all the way backed off and i cant get it on and i have the brakes set exactly like that one
There actually is an adjuster hole right behind where the adjuster sits (on my 03 Echo at least). It's behind where the brake-line enters the drum so it's a little tricky to access. It has an oval rubber plug to keep water and dirt out. I didn't know about it and just used two bolts to brute force my drum off and cracked the cylinder and broke a pin in the process, so use the adjuster first to avoid damage.

Sir my name is Phil from Oklahoma City I have a question recently I replaced the battery about a year ago on my 2007 Chevy trailblazer it's done good everything's going great we're here lately my transmission's been slipping will not slipping not going into gear it's laboring real bad before it goes in to 3rd or overdrive it won't go in and I have to manually shift her sometimes for it to do so if I take my battery cable off for a while and put it back all that reset my memory computer memory box or whatever please let me know something thank you

won't dispute anything you said except I always adjusted the rear brakes by tightening or loosening the parking brake cable from inside the car

My pedal is soft on my 2000 Echo could this fix it? I have already bleed my breaks a couple of times and helped a little but didn’t fix the problem

Transferring the auto adjuster assembly from the old shoe to the new shoe is a little tricky.

I can't get the drum off. There doesn't seem to be adjuster in the back at all. Need to clean it up so the self adjusting works
Use two M8, 1.25 screws in the two holes on the outside of the drum to push the drum off.
