    Excellent video, I'm going to try both Mr. Catfish double action and the Trokar next spring. I used mostly Gamakatsus octopus but I'm having much better luck with Mr. Catfish. The Trokar are very sharp, can't wait to try them next spring when catfish stockings starts. I like the gap of the Berkeley, I might buy some later. Thank you for your great and very detailed review sir.

      Late but the VMC 9788s are a really nice catfish hook too if you have not tried those. It’s a commercial long line hook, you can get them in bulk in for like 50¢ each, they are 4x strong with about a 15-20° offset and come stupid pointy. I maybe only have to give the tips a very slight touching up with a 1000 grit ceramic stone to really get that hypodermic needle point. Their 12/0 size is about the same size as an 8/0 mustad demon perfect in 3x strong, really solid hook and a hell of a deal when you can get them in the 100 packs. Perfect for big blue cats.

      I just tried the Mustad Demon circle 1x fine wire inline size #6 circle hook for panfish. Ordered another 25 immediately as I highly recommend them. I only catch and release. It is a game changer over the J hook. Caught 30+ bluegill in the last week. No gut or gill hooking regardless of small or large. Also caught a 14" Largemouth.
      I crushed down the barb and super easy backing out the hook. Beware crushing down the barb. I have had 8 fish back themselves off the hook.

    Unfortunately, the only hook that I know of that even comes close to the sharpness of some those carp hooks is that Trokar. I follow English Carp fishing, even use the method lead system & hair rigs for Channel's & have also caught some decent blues with it as well. I really like the quality of a lot of the English carp gear. I have a couple of chairs & other things from there. I wish carp hooks were larger but until that ever happens, I stick to the Trokar. You can get 50 hook tournament packs of them much cheaper than getting them a few at time. That's what I use.

    I have used the Eagle Claw 7228 for 15 years, my hook up ratio is over 95%. I have no problems proactively setting the hook with the 7228. I do like the Hooker's Hybrid Circles, great for floats and anytime a j hook is needed, sets like a j but gets em in the corner of the mouth. Trokar are awesome but pricey! The double actions never worked good for me, small gap = a lot of misses.

      Last year i hooked into 5 trophy cats (for me 30 lb is trophy) , and lost all 5 of them about 1 minute into the fight. You know you can tell something is heavy when it just takes line and doesn't shake the rod. That got me into thinking I am doing something wrong, and i went on to a Circle Hook shopping spree. I was using the Mustad and Gamakatsu on all the fish I lost. I still don't have full confidence in any of them. I have to stop losing fish though.

    • @TwiztedFishingTv
      @TwiztedFishingTv 6 років тому

      The reason I shy away from Gama's are if your just a lil off in timing you miss or barely hook them, and they are brittle. I broke off a bunch, just snapped right off clean.

    • @mahoney1138
      @mahoney1138 6 років тому +1

      Are you trying to set the hook with a Circle hook? If so thats the wrong approach. Ive used all sorts of Cirlce hooks and all you need to do is keep the rod tip up and reel in and the hook does the work for you. If someone is trying to set the hook, like a traditional J hook, then itll come right ouf of their mouth or the hook set will be poor.

    • @TwiztedFishingTv
      @TwiztedFishingTv 6 років тому +1

      Yea, I'm a little more pro active, I set with a circle. It's not for everyone but I rarely miss, I can count my lost fish for the season on my fingers. You can check out my vids, all circle, except a few float rigs. It takes a certain action rod, coupled with set style. I have done it so long it's a natural way to set for me now.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому

      Very good shape. Very good hook up ratio because of good shape. Very strong - never heard of a hook bending. However compared to Berkley or japanese hooks, the tip is not as sharp, and the tip doesn't last as long. I keep checking the tip and replace them when the tip feels blunt. Not many hooks are overall better though.. some are sharper but don't have good shape.. Some are too expensive.. Overall is a good reliable hook and a good value

  • @ARCSTREAMS
    @ARCSTREAMS 3 роки тому

    yeah i noticed they are not sharp as other hooks for some reason but i guess they still work ,i would like it if they had bait holder barbs on the inside of the shank(dont think i ever seen that on hooks ) ,or outside, i would also think if the top of the shank near the eye had more weight it would work much better, i will add a small split shot and see if my theory is correct

    1. offset hooks catch a lot more fish because the barb tip digs into the mouth at a steeper angle
    2. the team catfish hook will catch more fish and allow you to present more bait at the same time. The hook gap is wider which allows for more opportunity for the barb to find the mouth . this also prevents your bait from blocking the hook barb
    3. the hook barb on the circle hook points inward to prevent fish from eating the hook. These hooks are designed to catch the corner of the mouth and save fish lives. people say that fish hook themselves on circle hooks, you dont need to set the hook
    4. the mustad hook has a bigger belly which is designed to guide the barb tip into the fishes mouth
    (most all of these hooks being presented are bait hooks designed to passively hook into fish as they swim away with your bait in their mouths)
    my circle hooks constantly catch themselves on EVERYTHING when im trying to rig my gear
    You will lose more fish on inline hooks

    I wasn't a fan of trokar in general. They are sharp af, but lose their point faster, and don't sharpen up right. I've also heard of them rolling more easily. I love the Berkely fusion hooks though. That slickset really is nice. The Teflon like coating seems to really make hooks penetrate easier. Though in general as far as circle hooks are concerned, I think as long as it's sharp enough that it would not require much force to be penetrated the sharpness of it is kind of a moot point. At least with circle hooks. Just the way the hook kind of cams in the fish's mouth, and the pressure of the hook comes from a different direction than the hook is set. So the simple action of a fish swimming away will cause the hook point to force through, even with a slightly dulled tip, I think it is not super important. And a two-sharp of hook could maybe even hinder the way the circle hook works as it could cause it to grab onto other things that it normally wouldn't grab onto.
    Another i have actually found i like is the tru turn catfish hooks. They aren't the typical circle hook, but don't require hook sets. They work great for idle type fishing techniques, as the shaft has bends in it, which upon application of pressure, causes the hook point to turn into the fishes mouth. (I got a pack of them when Walmart was doing a revamp of their tackle section and put a whole bunch of stuff on clearance, some of which was brand new. Like the Berkeley slick set I goy multiple ackages of those for maybe a dollar each. )
    They are sharp, but I think most importantly is just like circle hooks they do not require a hook set. But I would think just based on the way these hooks are, since they are a traditional j hook they just have a cam action to them, if one were to set the hook to aggressively I think they would still set just fine. They don't seem super popular, but work well.

    straight alignment is the best. To much angle on the hook is hard for the fish to get a bite but the angle on the point is for catching the hook in the side of the mouth when you are pulling the bait out. Keeps the fish from getting gut hooked. the fish will hook itself on the exit in the corner of the mouth. so the fish wins. He gets caught but not killed. Unless you wish to eat him. If not you can release unharmed.

      maybe you sharpen, maybe you dull them. Depends on your file and your skills. Japanese hooks are laser or chemically sharpened and then surface treated. U can never improve the sharpness of a circle hook with a file. Additionally if u file the treated part of the tip, it loses corrosion protection and will rust. Also the tip is not as hard without the treatments and easier to bend. I don't recommend touching brand new hooks. Not even Eagle Claw. Japanese hooks are already dangerously sharp.. i dont think anyone is messing with that..

      Circle hooks are not for proactively setting the hook. You don’t make a circle hook “weedless”, as you do for a Texas rig with a soft plastic worm. You can use a piece of cut bait and a circle hook in the form of “knocker rig”, which is similar to the Texas rig with a soft plastic worm.

      @@ifishcatfish hmm are you saying all metal hooks have some kind of coating? well perhaps if you do it lightly just to take off the shine you can still leave most of the protective layer on, or maybe use a black marker to dull them or black paint

      yes, all hooks. Without coating steel will rust in a few hours, not even days

    Here is their catalog. May be they are not well known in catfish community but they make great hooks killer sharp and long lasting. Just an alternative.

      i have actually seen and used Maruto hooks in Bulgaria. The hooks in Bulgaria don't have an eye and are hard to tie, so i don't buy them, but they are super sharp and have good design

      Brian Sherwood thats fair, i appreciate the feedback. If u have any interest in circle hooks i would just watch the last few mins tho, i think the best ones are last and they are not popular at all. I regret spending so much time on hooks that everybody knows

      I had some but they are not very sharp and i will not be buying more. The shape looks nice, but there are many sharper hooks out there.
