- This 1949 black and white film about the Cole Brothers Circus arrival, setup, and show in a town is presented by Encyclopaedia Britannica Films Inc. A group of boys and men in 1940s clothing watches the Cole Bros. Circus train arrive (:03-:18). A horse is unloaded from a boxcar. A cart of tent poles is unloaded (:19-:41). Elephants leave the boxcar, with a head close-up (:42-:58). Men ride elephants through town. The wagon and elephants arrive at the field. An elephant pulls ropes to bring the center pole for the Big Top upright. (:59-1:42). Men use mallets to pound in large tent stakes; a machine is also used (1:43-2:03). A group and an elephant unroll tent canvases. The men lace canvas pieces together (2:04-2:48). A crowd mingles. A man holds a child out to touch an elephant’s trunk (2:49-2:57). The canvas rises as an elephant pulls the ropes. The tent is fully deployed, including an American flag. The ‘Greatest Circus on Earth’ tent sign is raised. (2:58-3:44). A heavily decorated steam calliope plays at the Midway. A barker invites people to watch the side shows. Men, women, and children in 1940s clothing listen (3:45-4:17). The acts include Professor Browne’s Minstrel Jubilee and a sword swallower. Men with cigarette’s dangling out of their mouths and boys buy tickets (4:18-4:42). Clown costumes hang on a rack. A man in a suit and tie changes and applies clown makeup. Clowns put on makeup and apply big red noses. They enter the Big Top. A band plays. Girls in the stands eat cotton candy (4:43-5:40). Dog in uniforms hit balloons in the air towards a basketball hoop. The crowd applauds (5:41-6:17). A man and woman roller skate in a small circle on a square board. He holds onto her with his teeth while she spins by a rope around her neck (6:18-6:35). Women in acrobat costumes spin from ropes while hanging on with their teeth (6:36-6:52). Acrobats use a teeterboard to flip each other into the air, onto each other’s shoulders, and into a chair (6:53-7:23). Clowns are shown (7:24-7:32). In ring one, prancing horses perform without riders, including standing on hind legs. The crowd of all ages claps (7:33-8:49). Female aerialists spin in the air while hanging onto ropes. Horses race around the hippodrome track. A woman stands on a 16-horse team (8:50-9:25). A female acrobat flips on and off a white horse. A clown rides backwards and performs tricks. The woman stands on the shoulders of a standing man on horseback. The man does a backflip while the horse is moving. A human pyramid on horseback is shown, as are tricks jumping on and off. The clown rides hanging onto the tail (9:26-11:45). The tight rope walker does flips on the wire (11:46-12:07). Elephants do tricks and pretty women do stunts with them. The clowns enter (12:08-13:52). A man and a woman are loaded into the human cannonball. It fires and each lands on the net (13:53-14:38).

There is certainly a lot of work involved to put on a circus! But it's worth it when we get to see all the performers and animals!
I grew up two blocks from a permanent annual circus show and building in my hometown of Peru, Indiana. When I was very little in the 1960's, I remember the old huge bigtop circus tents being raised, just like shown in this video, next to the town railroad tracks. The Cole Brothers Circus used to have their traveling winter quarters in Peru, too. This video brings back many childhood memories of growing up in a circus town.

I’ve got dreams of starting my own circus someday, but a small traveling old school one
I dreamed of joining the circus all the time when I was a kid. I did get to help erect the kitchen tent and got free tickets when I was like 12. My mom wouldn't let me go to the night show though, but it was a fun experience.
Really you have to be born into the circus but nowadays with the internet it's all gone, the net is obsessed with saying negative things about the circus so everybody uses their products instead

I do not feel happy when I see the animals being used like this, nor do I want them to be used like this again. However, seeing old footage like this fascinates me in such a way I cannot describe.

They're unable to be sociable, get enough daily exercise, exhibit natural behaviors, and often develop behavioral and/or health problems BECAUSE of this life.
Not only this, but they are forced to perform by painful techniques such as whips, tight collars, electric prods, and get beat until they learn to obey. They also are often malnourished.
You know the whole trick of tigers jumping through flaming hoops? Tigers are naturally TERRIFIED of flames.
I was thinking this was the was the past’s escape from the day to day. We have technology now to detract from our mundane routine, but back then performers would rigorously work on their to pull off these super human feats. Performing like this was a lifestyle commitment, that even was always at risk and wouldn’t last into old age, depending on your act. And yet, all of these individuals come together and put their lives at stake to spark inspiration and applaud to its audience. There is a sense of magic seeing these in real life.
The elephants I find the most disturbing. So much repetitive motions from them, must have gone through a lot of abuse. It probably wasn't much fun for the horses either, but at least they're actually domestic animals.
as a kid in the 60's we didn't think about that. It was just the thought of the adventure of it all when the world was a lot smaller then.

So many rules and regulations now and crazy people making up stories about the animals when you can see their clearly looked after
My only problem with the Circus was how they treated their animals.The elephants in particular ,were fear and pain trained.Elephants piss themselves when their trainers show up .Those sticks they carry have nasty sharp painfull hooks which the trainer uses on sensitive spots on the trainees to control their wards.Cruel and just wrong imho .Lions ,chimps,monkeys are all imprisoned for life .All for our entertainment..
They literally aren't after a certain age they retire and go live on a conservation with other animals. Do more research before just spouting your feelings and misinformation

I wish stupid people would become a thing of the past because any intelligent person knows if you hurt a two-tone animal it's going to kill you. I guarantee that you haven't heard of the Ringling Brothers story ? The animal rights groups make millions of dollars out of donations but they couldn't find any evidence so they dressed their own people up in circus costumes and got them to go in and hurt the animals while other people from the animal rights groups were filming which they took to court. They also bribed politicians an ex employees to speak in court. The were busted and now have to pay back 10 million dollars to the circus for lying about the care of the animals because they simply couldn't find any evidence. Now it's worth noting that the animal rights groups because they couldn't find any evidence have now bought massive shares in the internet which is why most of the comments sections on circuses are empty and there is so many incorrect stereotypes getting around. It happened in Australia a trainer was being bad to the elephant but before the owner was even aware and could sack the person the elephant killed the trainer which is extremely rare to have anything like this happen but that's what they do . Maybe you need to stop stereotyping and believing and children story books and find out the truth. If you want to know how the animals are trained it's all there on the net no cruelty whatsoever

As I've said so many times to the dumb young women that go on about circus cruelty I'll give you my house if you can prove that anything is being done wrong in western circuses, sure in third world countries where they have no laws there is problems but not the civilised countries
