    Loved today’s sit and spin topic! I’m also not an art-yarn person. I also like creating consistent yarns I can knit with, and I’m also not a fan of knitting with art yarn. I’ve had people ask me why I wouldn’t want to make art yarn, so I’m glad to know someone else who agrees with me! 😂
    Also, “Everyone sucks in the beginning,” couldn’t be more true! 🥴

    Today I particularly appreciate your saying that your hands and your heart will remember how to spin despite taking a break from spinning. I finally saw myself making spinning progress, and then had my thumb surgery in November. It’s probably at least another 8 weeks of no spinning. Your reminder gives me hope that I'll not be starting over from the beginning, that what I learned still lives inside me and I can trust my hands to remember how to do this.
    Some of those things you wished you had learned before starting to spin, I got to learn from you before I started. Like sampling different breeds and not just buy pretty colors. I appreciate all the wisdom you've shared, not only tonight but also in those first videos about your spinning journey. I avoided several swampy paths thanks all the hard won wisdom you shared. harpingJanet

      Yes! Exactly this, Janet. Sometimes we need to take breaks for a myriad of reasons and its really just a joy to know that when we find out way back, things will be just fine. We may be a bit rusty but we’ll muddle our way on through.

    The dragon is oh so real! I dont spin (yet!) and learned of world of wool yarns after the pandemic and have amassed quite the hoarde. So much yarn to move thru, thankfully its in weights that I love but I do wish I slowed down my purchases to better understand why I was buying these like hotcakes. I am reaching this point and I have slowed down so much and am proud of that. I appreciate the wisdom you give in these videos 😊

    Tazhi, this was such a great episode, and so full of wisdom! I’m two plus years into my spinning, and I totally went in for the ALL the hand painted braids. Now I’m patiently working on spinning down the stash, planning projects as I go. The struggle of learning something new is real, especially as an adult learner. I started playing a new to me instrument a year ago, and I was ready to quit before my first lesson. I could apply everything you were saying, about sucking at the beginning of learning to spin, to my new musical journey. Just hearing your “ten things I wish I knew” about your journey had me nodding along in affirmation. “Just keep spinning, just keep spinning, that’s what we do, we spin…”

      I’m going to sing that to myself all the time so thanks for that! Also happy foray into making music - it’s a wonder to me all the things our bodies can do if we give them time and space to learn and play and explore.

    The dragon is real!!! I’ve been spinning a little over a year now. The spindles are a deep deep rabbit hole 😳 and all the fiber! I just detstashed lots of single skeins of yarn that are no longer bringing joy. I was subscribed to the Hello Yarn fiber club but stopped as I can’t keep up with all the things!!! I love your videos. Really appreciated your being real and vulnerable on your down day. We all have them.

    It’s always something you go into a new hobby technically knowing: that you’re going to suck, and it’s not going to be perfect. But we all seem to forget it as soon as we start. 😅 I’m so guilty of that. “What do you mean I’m not instantly perfect at this brand new skill I have never tried before??? Preposterous!!”
    Also thank you for saying you don’t need to spin every day. I’ve only just started my spinning journey, and I have felt like I’m never going to make any progress if I don’t practice every day. I’m a nurse who, until next month (starting a new job as an OR nurse!) have been doing twelve hour shifts, and most times after a shift, the only thing I want to do is go to bed. So that’s honestly relief to know that it’s not going to hinder my success.

    • @stitchesandstarlight
      @stitchesandstarlight  10 місяців тому

      I felt that DEEPLY - “oh you mean I’m not immediately a master maker? How dare, time to throw the wheel out the window!”

    Finally catching up to these.
    Just to show how real "everyone learns differently" is, personally I picked up the basics of spinning almost instantly, but *knitting* still completely baffles me even after 30 years of trying and several very long projects. If I make a mistake or drop a stitch, I still have to have someone else fix it because I can't.
    (Also, the urge to hoard tools is real haha)

    Listening to you talk about breeds was helpful. I'm still a new spinner, but my projects I had a harder time with happen to be spun with rambouillet. I still have more skills to practice, but I'm realizing there were some breeds I enjoyed spinning with over others.

    Slowly catching up on all these wonderful videos! As a very new spinner (who sucks) I really appreciated this! I also can heavily relate to buying craft materials when I should just go to sleep. I over-researched and overbought yarn over the pandemic, and since I've been working on unlearning some of those habits. I have a huge stash of nonsuperwash colourwork yarn, which I do really like, but as I really love to knit gifts I've realized I should have invested more in acrylic and superwash that are more gift-friendly. Which is definitely counterintuitive to a lot of conventional recommendations, but would have been less wasteful for me in the long run, because only some people are up for a wool gift.

    In another wooly group I’m in people often say that when trying something new you have to be brave before you can be good.
    Something I try when I seem to shop too much is to fill the cart, get the dopamine hit from adding all the joys into the cart… then walk away for 24hrs. I end up either forgetting about it or realizing I don’t need it right now, or I still love it and buy it. But the cool down helps and I still had fun shopping and adding to cart even if I don’t buy.

      This prep isn’t designed for any sort of long draw spinning - I’ve tried. It might just be a bad representation of the breed, I’ve spun carded down breeds with no problem in the past.

    Interesting to hear your reflections on your spinning journey Tazhi. Even though I don't spin, I can relate to the "buying all the tools" and "hoarding all the things". During lock-down my yarn buying went through the roof but I also realised I picked up my knitting when something emotional was going on for me that I couldn't verbalise. So now I try and shop from my stash but also don't get mad with myself- it was my way of coping and I will use it all up eventually ☺

    Thank you so much for this video, Tazhi! Probably my favorite one yet of this vlogmas season. Because of the content you put on UA-cam, I took a spinning class this past summer and I have a wheel on the way as a combined birthday/Christmas present to myself. While my dragon is always SO TEMPTED by the hand-dyed braids, I just purchased a plethora of small portions of different breeds to practice on and figure out what I like. Ya gurl already has an expensive yarn problem... can't be buying sweater quantities of hand-dyed fiber before I'm even fully comfortable spinning! While I'm not putting pressure on myself to be good immediately, I'd love to become a technical spinner eventually, able to make yarn deliberately for the project I want... so thank you for the encouragement to keep notes. Incidentally, I fell into sheep ownership by accident, and have five Shetland girls whose fleece I taught myself how to shear this past year and plan on fully processing myself once I get over being intimidated by the process. I'm sorry I missed running into you at Maryland Sheep & Wool this past spring because I would love to tell you in person how much I enjoy your channel and how pivotal it has been for my fleece and fiber journey thus far. Sending you warmth and brightness this holiday season!

    Thank you for these sit-and-spins, especially talking about spinning - but I loved the one about holiday traditions too as I also had experience with fruitcake. I've been spinning for about 15 yrs, and I started with support spindling, but I found that my sense of what spinning is didn't match the vocabulary of everyone else's practice. I really appreciate your granular view which gets closer to what we have in our hands and what we do.

  • @daniellebissonnette3304
    @daniellebissonnette3304 10 місяців тому

    I love when you share your thought process, it helps me understand your experience with the wool that you are spinning. The top you are spinning seems so lifeless. I wonder if it would have helped to steam it before spinning? This has helped me with some commercial "roving" that I bought for my first spins. Another way that I found to open up wool that is somewhat felted is to sink the teeth of a metal comb through the fibers several times along the length of the sliver. I am still very much a beginner and don't yet have a lot of fiber tools, so I use what I have on hand, in thus case it was a groomer's comb 😊

    • @stitchesandstarlight
      @stitchesandstarlight  10 місяців тому +1

      I think this is just a bad prep of this breed - I’ve spun the down breeds in carded form and I liked it so much more than this top situation. It wasn’t felted or matted, it was just a mix of different staples so it was hard to find a drafting rhythm and because it was combed, it was hard to spin woolen. I do have a plan for the next time I tackle it in this box though.

I also thought I wanted to do art yarn and idk where I got that from. 😂 I hate working with art yarn so idk why I thought I wanted to make so much of it. I also thought I had to be good at spinning bc I’ve had so much experience with other crafts but like duh this is different. I also bought so much merino and I just do not like it. I like longer staple lengths. I have never joined a fiber club bc I feel the same way about quitting 😂. I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings. Omg. You’re calling me out on the sleep shopping. 😔

    Hey new friend. I found you recently because so many people mentioned you in their podcasts. And i totally see why. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
    I learned spinning spontaneously in august. I was traveling in Ladakh (india) and found a spindle on my search for cashmere wool. So i bought it and tried to find someone to teach me. It was a supported spindle called phang (i obviously had no idea at that point). So i went to a nomad village in the Himalayas and a nice older lady showed me and gave me her old spinning bowl. Obviously I had to buy a kg of fresh shoren cashmere and 2kg of yak wool from the same village. Cause it's more fun to start unprepared and learn on a whim. Amazing experience. And let me tell it is sooo much easier to learn with nicely prepared wool. But I love the experimenting. I got some different fibers and spindles on occasion like some Indian silk from south India and a friend just got me some baby camel wool from the desert in Rajasthan. So i have a fun beginner stash for experimenting. And through people like you i learn along the way. So thank you for that.
    Have a lovely day

      Most of my friends on Instagram are my favorite spinners, but to name a few Melody at pacificcoasterfibres, Hikari Handmade, and Vivian at whatvivdoes.

    One day. One day I will dive into the world of spinning and I will drown. I know myself. I will try to learn how to spin on some antique spinning wheel and I will be way to afraid to mess upp pretty wool so I will get the cheapest stuff I can find and I will beat myself up because it's not turning out the way I want.. and somehow I will still get absolutely obsessed and drive my poor boyfriend up the walls

      It’s a slippery slope but you’re in good company down here at the bottom.

    Speaking of exuberance, I'd much rather spend time with a stream of consciousness chaotic narrative over a carefully enunciated almost scripted content. It's how I approach the world and my love of fiber arts

      Thank you for saying so - sometimes I get stuck in my head and the words don’t come out as nicely as I wish but I do my best thinking this way so the chaotic exuberance is here to stay!

      I’m actually not interested in any of the autowinders for my wheel - I like being able to control how my bobbins wind on so I don’t plan on buying one for any of my wheels or spinners.
