  • A lot of wood chips and sawdust are formed in the workshop of woodworkers and carpenters. These wood dusts are usually swept up and thrown away. However, it is possible to use wood powders in a very useful way. You can combine wood shavings and dust with glue to obtain wood filler. You can use this paste you have obtained to fill the gaps in the wooden parts. If you are wondering how to evaluate your wood dust and sawdust and how to make homemade wood filler, you should definitely watch this video.

    Have done this for decades.
It's important to use the dust from the same species of wood to fill the hole. Also, using an electric sander will tend to heat up the glue making the fill darker and gum up the paper. Use the glue-dust fill sparingly and hand sand.

"Have done this for decades." Me too, nothing new under the sky... Try with superglue (cyanoacrylate) do not mix it, poor the glue on the saw dust in place... in case of a bad joinery, use two components glue instead...

Only yesterday, I used rapid epoxy with paper kitchen towel, to fill an enlarged screw hole in veneered chipboard, which was to take a cup hook. Within minutes the hook was weight bearing.

This works well for painted projects, but it's not recommended for stained projects. The wood glue / sawdust mixture will not stain well at all.
An option to use when staining a project. Use the same stain you're going to use with your project and mix it with the sawdust. Then, mix clear

Been doing this for years. My favorite trick is to use particle board for work bench table top. It is cheap and very smooth and flat. Good for project surface to work on. I drill parts right into the table. After a while, just mix up sawdust and glue and fill drill holes in my work surface and sand them smooth. Good as new since particle board actually is just sawdust glued together.

sawdust once sifted leaves a finer powder more manageable and much less coarse finish Start with unsifted and finish with sifted
Cléopâtre glue also holds pores and varnish outdoors

Spade drillers works good in thick wood

  • @pixelmangler
    @pixelmangler 2 роки тому +9

If surface finish is hidden, it may help to use this type of process. For a stained finish it will pay dividends to use your tools and work processes more accurately. e.g. The half-housing joint was out of true and measurement by a country mile. The final appearance would not pass a customer's inspection. The knot was filled and sanded and was still left looking rough. The drilling of the the square length of wood showed that you drill bit was not square in the chuck (or the drill bit was bent). The technique for hidden screw holes is to use a chisel to raise a plug of wood which is larger than the hole. Drill the hole and place the screw then glue and clamp the plug of wood. Sanding the result will yield an invisible screw hole. You will drill much better holes if you use drill bits designed for wood rather than metal. These are known as Brad Point drill bits and can be used for soft and hardwoods.

I've done that paste in the past. When it was time to sand it I regret it. THIS IS VERY HARD TO SAND.

I usually use 2p10 thick and the dust from my sander bag that matches the wood I am using for larger holes/cracks or for small ones like in the knot I just use 2p10 thin and sand over it. It creates a closer match and not so much of a grey look.

A slight twist on this is using fine grained swarf to fill cracks on commercial aircraft ...... but mixed with a very advanced resin adhesive. The idea is the same.
