    I must say, i greatly prefer clothbound over the other deluxe series. The paper boards of the other deluxe just do not appeal to me - wear & tear is much more noticeable. This is one of the reasons I have not updated my original Nasmith illustrated Silmarillion (though the newer edition is tempting with almost double the illustrations. But the black cloth with silver foil lettering makes the book look great in its DJ or without. .

    The third time is the charm ! I usually go for the standard editions, but this one and the upcoming Silmarillion are tempting me

    Hello!
    I'm interested in starting collecting books by J.R.R. Tolkien. I really like the look and the quality of this edition and I also see that there is a similar edition of The Silmarillion coming out very soon. Are there other books within the Tolkien universe that are in this edition?

    Wow! Good to see You :) 2 month since last video. Time flies🙂 I ordered Unfinished Tales Illustrated Edition but the dust cover is so delicate. Again, it is so nice to listen to you talking about books (especially because English is not my native language)

    The 1st printing of the Deluxe Brown Unfinished Tales was printed in Italy.

      @@TalkingTolkien Hello!
      Where can I check which edition I have? How do you know exactly that yours is 5th?
      I have bought book back in October and mine is printed in Italy, but I must say that I am disappointed with paper quality and even more with quality of illustrations.
      All of them were blurred and printed on non glossy paper. In my opinion book do not worth such money...

    I really love that cardboard sleeve with the blue wizards on. It looks great and the blue overall is much more visually appealing than the brown (for me anyway!). I agree that having the map separate to the book is a good idea. It's always a pain to refer to the fold out maps within the books themselves when you're reading.

      Check out the boxed set of 4 maps by Brian Sibley and John Howe called 'The Maps of Middle-earth.' In it, you get:
      - Wilderland
      - Middle-earth
      - Beleriand
      - Numenor (exclusive to the set)

      @@insurrbution I have that! It's a gorgeous set :) The only issue is that I framed the maps, so I can't very easily look at them when I'm sat reading my books

    And it’s £100.00 it seems not much for the money compared to the £30 regular edition with the same amount of coloured illustrations. As an illustration graduate and Tolkien fan that’s a problem.

    Do these these Deluxe editions have any collector value if you keep them sealed, or will they be printed into Oblivion?

    This (and The Silmarillion edition of the same style, even despite the bright orange) are my favourite books in my collection. They're really beautiful and feel quite special. Much prefer these to the standard deluxe slipcased editions, and indeed the super dooper deluxe editions of LOTR & Sil, which I find a little tacky, to be honest.

    Is Amazon your most reliable source for your special edition Tolkien books?

    • @TalkingTolkien
      @TalkingTolkien  3 роки тому +2

      I've had mixed luck. I find Amazon package well and are easy to return, but aren't generally the cheapest. I'm usually happy to pay a bit more to guarantee I get a pristine copy though, so tend to use Amazon.

    • @Magnanimoose
      @Magnanimoose 3 роки тому +5

      @@TalkingTolkien My experience is the complete opposite, books from Amazon are either dirty or damaged and the only packaging is the box they come in. At least it's easy to return them.

      I might have been lucky! I think it helps that this one came in the brown box you see at the start of the video - all copies come with that so it adds another layer of protection...

    I came across your videos whilst trying to decide which books I should buy to start my collection (I ended up going with the original bestiary because I found a first edition). Thank you for all of the insight and glimpses of the books! I've been debating getting the LotR and Hobbit sketchbooks for months already, but I always second guess myself when I see all the other books available. By chance, do you have John Howe's 'A Middle-Earth Traveller' or can suggest any David Day books?

    In terms of size, are the standard and deluxe of these books the same?

    • @James-nl5vl
      @James-nl5vl 3 роки тому

      As i have bought the 4 book illustrated box set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and want to keep them all as close as i can to the same size and style.
      The standard version of this Unfinished Tales and even the upcoming The Silmarillion look very in keeping with those in terms of style and size but do the deluxe versions come away from that. That would be a shame as the deluxe ones are very nice.
