  • The Houston Jazz Collective mines the origins of Southern art and jazz in a special presentation featuring the artwork of Jack Whitten, an artist featured in The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse. The work is accompanied by music from thirty-year veteran of The Duke Ellington Orchestra Texas Tenor Shelley Carrol; four-time Grammy winner bassist Tim Ruiz; and New Orleans native, member of the BB King Orchestra, The NOLA Resistance and the first on-call jazz pianist Darrell Lavigne. From John Coltrane, Les McCann, Miles Davis, and Cannonball Adderley to rap and hip hop, the Collective takes you on a journey through the South and across time.
    About the Houston Jazz Collective
The Houston Jazz Collective is the brainchild of Shelley Carrol and Andre Hayward. Its mission is to enrich and expand the jazz community through performance, education, and advocacy. The Collective takes on many forms but strives to always feature a luminary artist in the jazz world.
