Training Mate at the Helm. (Industry Inside secrets at end of video)

- Anyone advancing up through the ranks has to start steering if they intend to go into the wheelhouse. Today we have a Mate trainee that is a true natural and will not have any trouble becoming a Mate. While waiting for the ship's crew to receive our lines, we talk about different things in the industry that some people get wrong (like where a ship is from).

When I was younger, 17yrs. Old, I worked in a department store in a few different depts. we had flat carts to move product around the building. Maybe 2x4 ft.. they had a handle waist high and 4 wheels. Two up front that were fixed and two in back. Steering one of those is very similar to what you described Steering your barge and tug. Not easy , trust me.😂
Thank you very much for watching Bob. CUOTO
Great job catching that plane departing Newark as they engaged the warp drive!
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Great job simplifying the highly technical fluid dynamics and the rack in the stern.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
A great video as usual. Keep it up. Always enjoy keep training the younger ones
Thank you for watching Chucky. CUOTO
Tim : Keep talking. That’s how I learn! I’m still here! 😊
Thank you very much for watching (and listening) George. CUOTO
Tim,
1) I have a book with ship-specific tankerman notes for mooring and bunkering, but I haven't added to it in 7-8 years. Generally I can eyeball the ship at this point and see what we need. Not perfectly, of course, I screw up here and there. I rarely can remember individual ships though. Too many ships over the years.
2) Maybe 1 out of every 200-300 ships I bunker is US flagged, at least in NY/NJ. Ports with military presence of course will change that, but most naval vessels run on diesel, not heavy oil.
3) The language barrier is a big, complex issue, and an interesting one. A good tankerman can't be a bad communicator, and simplified maritime English is its' own Pidgin.
😂😂😂😂 Always good to hear from the guy that does it! That last one had me giggling. Thank you very much Paul for watching and commenting. CUOTO
excellent video nice sunrise thank you Tim
Thank you very much for watching James. CUOTO
your welcome Tim
I love your videos…so does my cat. When she hears the machinery noises, she comes and watches the video.
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Your videos are great. Can’t imagine getting any better
Thank you very much for watching and Dean. I appreciate that. CUOTO
Good one. Really enjoyed that. Thank you.
Thank you very much for watching Laurie. CUOTO
Yeah. We love Sal and “what’s going on with shipping” channel. Between Tim and Sal you have it all covered. CUOTO.
Thank you very much for watching. I really appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Like the charts....
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
I follow him he’s a great resource for WHATS GOING ON WITH SHIPPING for sure
Thank you very much for watching William. CUOTO
Thanks!
Woohoo! Tony! You are the man! Thank you very very much! CUOTO
I enjoyed seeing the clear view of the line handling. It's usually rather hard to see. Happy New Year.
Thank you for watching and Happy New Year. CUOTO
You are doing a great job. If I wasn't an old retired person I would love to train for a job like yours. You make it very interesting.
Thank you very much Walter. I appreciate that. CUOTO
I like the chart part as you cansee where you are going,
Thank you very much for watching Elizabeth. CUOTO
Again, excellent video.
Thank you for watching Kelly. CUOTO
As always, great video with something new: Great video and narrative of the line handling and process of tying up alongside a very large ship. The way I look at it as a long-time viewer is that listening to you talk about things that I've heard before, reenforces that knowledge and is the price of hearing the new things. Keep doing what you are doing. things are getting better as you adapt to the new format. I don't mind opening Google Earth to track the action, that's why I have two big monitors! I do that even when you have the chart plotter displayed. Don't worry about the trolls, they will always be around, kind of like the Karens. CUOTO and best to you and yours, Ed
Thank you very much Ed! That means a lot to me. CUOTO
Training the new guy/gal. Brings back memories for sure. I started on tugs over 45 yrs ago, came up through the hawespipe. Lucky for me, I started running small work tugs/barges mostly on dredging jobs and got my feel for it. Theres nothing like banging mud scows up alongside the dredge and getting yelled at from the foreman, to help a fella to learn good boat handling skills. 🤣 I like to think I progressed from there after getting my Masters ticket, but many might debate that? LOL
Ive trained a few fellas over the years and it's not easy. Until that person gets their hands on the sticks and figures out "why" they are supposed to do something, explaining it to them will generally fall on deaf ears. The worst trainees I've had have been ex-ship masters who decide after they retire, they want to play on the tugboats. Hands down, they were all idiots in the wheelhouse of a tug!
Anyway, good video!
😂😂😂😂 Sounds familiar. 😂 😂 DP guys are a close second. Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Cap. Glad to have you onboard. CUOTO
The other way to explain 1 whistle. I am altering my course to starboard. Which of course would have them on your port side.
Keep up the great work Tim.
Happy new year
Happy New Year to you as well. Thank you for watching. I don't know that I would explain it that way because it really means that you intend to see them on your port side. It does not mean you are altering course to starboard. CUOTO
Tim, thank you for the reply.
My error. The international rule states I am altering my course to starboard.
I always thought most of the difference between inland and international was just wording with a few exceptions.
Stay safe😊
Thx for the vid Capt.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
If you get work in the Gulf, welcome! You know what would freak me out about the big ships and their foreign crews is the officers are from one country and the worker bees are from another country. Now just imagine that there are 3 different languages going and a lot of screaming! I tried to use as much possible sign language as possible 😅 CUOTO
Thank you for watching Doug. That is how it is on most ships. CUOTO
@@TimBatSeayeah, I know, just was making small talk
Happy New Year! Great lesson in momentum and inertia.
Thank you very much for watching Sandy. CUOTO
Thanks for sharing, have to admit hanging around like that would drive me nuts.
It's not for everyone. Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Thank you for another Great video. CUOTO !
Thank you for watching Steven. CUOTO
Great job by the newbie. The ships crew has only one speed.....Thanks Tim
Thank you for watching William. CUOTO
hope you had a few games of cribbage while alongside good job to the new guy he has a good teacher G
Thank you very much for watching Garth. It is getting harder and harder to find someone to play a hand of crib with these days. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea I live is a seniors home being 83 I play every tuesday I might ad im quite good at it lol
chart plotter seems good to learn or refresh geography
Thank you for watching. It adds a lot of situational awareness. CUOTO
Great video, Tim. Not at all boring. Question re waiting for ship's crew to show up to take lines; can you radio-communicate with the ship's (English-speaking) officers ahead of time to let them know you are on your way and give them an ETA? Maybe they would be ready for you, and maybe not.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to see what you're going to be doing in Houston.
You can call the docking pilot before the ship arrives and tell them to relay to the crew that bunkers are arriving. Your odds remain about the same on if you’ll have anyone waiting.
Thank you for watching Ralph. Yes, as said above, you'll only get the pilot if at all. Once they are tied up, the radios are turned off. CUOTO
Dang! 45 min is a long time to hold fast next to that ship! Good job, Trainee!
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Dr Laura. (Are you an MD? I need help putting a med kit together to cross the Atlantic in my sailboat) timbatsea@gmail.com CUOTO
@ sorry, I am the useless kind… A PiledHigher and Deeper. I’ve been following you for years (possibly under a different acct) and was a Patreon until our credit card got compromised and I had difficulties rejoining. I’ll try again. I have learned SO much from you and love your leadership/personality! You are so encouraging to your staff! Any chance you might have a meet ‘n greet at a tavern in Houston sometime since it sounds like you may be in the area some???
@dr.laurav8013 😂😂😂 No problem Laura. No chance because we are not allowed off the boat or other allowed to visit. Thank you very much for supporting the channels both here and on Patreon! It really helps and is very much appreciated! Thank you! CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Well, rats! I hope it works out that I can join you for a meet and greet when I’m on my Great Loop and in your area in the next year or two. I love your content! What has become of the young woman (your friend’s daughter, as I recall) you introduced us to about 2yrs ago? Has she stayed in the field?
@dr.laurav8013 oh yes. Hope is an engineer at our company and works on one of our huge ATBs on the West Coast. CUOTO
Tables? We don't need no Steenkin tables, Tugboat pilots rule.
Physics, baby!
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channels Mellissa! Badges? We don't need no stinking badges! 😂 CUOTO
Chart plotter: Me like! Saves me from having to keep a second window open on Google Earth. Thank you.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
They call em rub rails for a reason!
Thank you very much for watching Robert. CUOTO
Chart plotter is good
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
I grew up in Jacksonville, near and on NAS Jacksonville, a Marine Corps brat. Never went to the port or Mayport. I was hoping to see a container being moved, but I guess it must be break time.
Thank you for watching Donald and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
There are a couple of footers (1000+ foot long) bulk carrier "Lake boats" up on the Great Lakes that have zero rake in the stern and I have always felt funny about that because the Great Lakes (Superior especially) can have HUGE waves (often 50-60 ft) when the weather gets rough and there is no such thing as an unsinkable ship.
I will not name the specific vessels to which I am referring for obvious reasons, but when I see them (in videos) coming in or out of Duluth I always wonder WHY they chose to make a flat square stern like that on such a vessel.
Thank you very much for again Mellissa. Yeah, that seems odd. But I know nothing about Great lakes shipping. CUOTO
Enjoyable video and really enjoyed your descriptions. Ambient noises of ventilation, wind etc... detracted the audio. Assume the horn noises were to call the line handlers.
Yes. Correct. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
I’ve heard you say the barges have their own crews but wondering if the boat stays with the barge during loading or discharge do you play ant part as PIC? In other words do they come for you with shiny bracelets in the event of a spill?
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Tom. The barges are manned with licensed tankermen. If there is oil in the water as a result of an allision or collision, then they will certainly come for me. But after it is tied up, we are usually off to the next job. CUOTO
#27 I enjoyed the video. Too bad I'm so old (76), I would like to have wheeled under you and handled the barge docking, just to learn the safety ropes, etc. Good luck on your new adventure.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
I used to hate doing advance and transfer. and then of course it would get ignored by the pilot.
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Duane. CUOTO
Does tugs back to port?
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Danny. Single screw, right hand wheeled tugs back to port. CUOTO
I heard the Captain's Salute. Was that the Tug or the Container ship?
That was us trying to get the attention of the ship's crew. CUOTO
Blah, blah, blah, blah ... you won't shut up!!! Joking with you Tim ... just "trying to help your algorithms"!!! LOL
On a serious note keep up the good work Capt'n as all of us that comment look forward to your video every week.
Stay safe. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching and commenting George! It really helps! CUOTO
Tim on real cold days is the load heated
Thank you for watching Ed. Not usually. The product comes heated and there's a lot of heat in a log of product. So as long as they can pump it off in a few days they don't need to reheat it. CUOTO
It's an unstated "secret"...A person may have all the proper licenses, certificates and professional experience, but companies primarily want to know if you can "drive" the boat competently. 😮
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Tim is it true your going to the gulf coast
Thank you for watching Ed. The boat is currently in the GOM but they have orders for Charleston SC. CUOTO
If ya running the gulf waters watch out for those pesky unmarked wellheads that have no reflector on them... They're near impossible to detect at night! But fresh shrimp right off the boat can't be beat! Enjoy your time off!
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Jon. We only run the lanes.CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!
Is the trainee that young guy from Maryland?
Way to go Maryland guy!
I like the chart plotter, but do what works best for you Captain Tim, I will watch it either way.
Adapted from Smokey and the Bandit:
East bound and down, loaded up and Tugging... (in Push gear)
CUOTO
😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channels Mellissa. No. This is another one from Virginia. CUOTO
Interesting to me how hard you drive your barges, speed wise. Obviously there is a reason for that, but it must cost in fuel?
Thank you for watching Kim. You know I did speed the video up in parts (mentioned it twice). We can't go much more than 8 kts downhill. CUOTO
Perhaps better mic much wind noise. Great video as always. Navigate by feel not by wire.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Technical difficulties with video equipment just plain suck!
I don't think I've ever lost footage due to a memory card going bad but I've had to toss video projects in the trash because the drone screwed up and I've had to toss quite a few projects because my Insta360 malfunctioned. And, of course, I screw up too!
Thank you very much for watching. I guess it's just part of the UA-cam experience. 😂 CUOTO
They're all new container cranes

I've said it before but, Sal, (Dr. Sal) sent me some months ago after the bridge collapse. So.... you owe him at least one sub, captain!....... LOL
Hang out with you just cuz I'm retired and enjoy learning about other jobs and ways of life.
Sal and I have history together (good history). He has been on this channel before and I have been a supporter of WGOIS for years. He used to do my closing scene. 😂 Thank you very much for watching Art. I appreciate that. CUOTO
You better have a coat with you when you cross. Looks like you left late again to go over.😎👍💨🌬️🥶☁️🍻 hopefully you’re already there, either way you’re gonna need a coat for a while.😎
Thank you very much for watching Chris. CUOTO
Yay chart-plotter! I didn't vote in the past, and I think anyone who watched and didn't comment favors the chart-plotter. Only the people who have a problem would make the effort to comment.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
