Back in my days in business the first time I got caught in a lawsuit my mentor told me to always always always make every effort to seem like the reasonable party and make the other side seem crazy in contrast.
She is like their Momma the way she lays it out. Which is good because there are many people that haven't had the mother that was really there to love them and yet lay down the law. She is a sweetie!
One of the good things about Mike's videos is getting to watch how the justice system works on a day-to-day level. Seeing how the sausage is made as the saying goes. It's these interactions that are all a part of what keeps society functioning. Ain't always perfect but as long as people with the desire to do the right thing are out there trying, that all we can do.
@@LawTalkWithMike Mike, PLEASE, try to get a follow up on the Moor that Middleton sent to jail? Or is it out of Middleton's hand at this point? I'm not sure if the Judge still has a role in that case.
Holy hell that guy has got a DEEP voice. But look how smoothly these things can go when you've got a defendant who cooperates and lets his lawyer and the court work for them! Who would have thought that cooperating with the court process and not acting out can wind up being to your benefit!? I also agree with the Judge when it comes to weed. It just strikes me as an excuse for people who want a legal justification to get high. Although, maybe they wouldn't have to if the American healthcare system didn't force people to bankrupt themselves to receive real treatment.
💯!! I also thought her comment to the defendant about weed-therapy being a scam came from a place of genuine concern. Kinda like a doctor giving you unfiltered truth, I would’ve appreciated her honesty if I were in his shoes.
I'm sure there are people who overuse medical marijuana, but it actually does help people. I have Tourette's and I tic so bad that I become physically exhausted, and I slap the crap out of myself and anyone else who is close to me without meaning to. It's not that I want to be blazed out of my mind, but it is nice to not feel like something is taking over my body and jostling it to death. I do agree with the judge, however, that you should get actual therapy for mental illness rather than just masking the symptoms.
I have truly fallen in love with your channel. Shows the human side of the justice system both civl and criminal. We are all human. God I love this judge. It ain't curing everything. Lol
Wow! This case was a breath of fresh air on this channel. A defendant who let his lawyer do the talking. We haven't seen that before. When asked a question by the judge, he said either "yes your honor" or "no your honor". Best part was at 3:40 when she asked "is there anything you would like to say on your on behalf"? Answer was "no, your honor". Best answer he could have given! This guy must be a genius (notwithstanding what brought him there to begin with). He wasn't under the influence, smoking a cigarette (my personal favorite), trying to lay down for a nap or walking around aimlessly. Somebody give this man a gold star for his court appearance. Could we be seeing a new direction for this channel?
I also see you on Legalbytes and enjoy your comments in the Cluster F**k of Depp v Heard. I also subscribe to your channel. I have now become addicted to several Judges zoom cases. I wish my attempts to continue to become a Paralegal or Court Reporter had not been halted by school closures, etc.
That is one of the smartest defendants you've ever covered, Mike. Met with the lawyer, heeded the lawyers advice, shown the court he wants to do better by proactively getting treatment, was on time and professional, let the lawyer speak for him at court and didn't take the opportunity to speak for himself, allowed the judge to speak, was incredibly respectful to the court, cooperated with the sentencing- and even if he had a difference of opinion to the judge about marijuanna - recognized it would not have been appropriate for this forum. Amazing.
I had to hire a lawyer once for something fairly minor. Well I didn't have to but I did it anyway on the advice of my parents. Cost me some money but it was worth it. My goal was to not go to jail I didn't care about anything else. He told me to just be quiet and don't say anything unless the judge asked me specifically and to be very brief if I did speak. They basically worked everything out before we even went to court amongst themselves. All I had to do was agree to it and keep my mouth shut. Worked out fine in the end.
I do like this judge, but I cringed pretty hard at that statement. I'm sure some people use it because they just want to be high, but it can help reduce symptoms like chronic pain, or Tourette's.
I’m a Ohio cop(just context). She should not be inputting her opinion on medication. If a doctor recommends medication, then she should not try to influence or make a ruling on medical advice!
Pot, while great, has its limits; it makes most pain tolerable, but is probably not going to cure everything like the strongest advocates claim. plus, it exacerbates certain types of crazy.
You gotta love when you leave a court date smiling. It can take a lot sometimes to provide some levity in such a serious environment (of course while also maintaining the court's demeanor). I think, at least for minor crimes, more people would view the court favorably if they got to see a more human side (and the court saw the human side of their defendant, such as Judge Frank Caprio of Providence, RI).
She is giving great advice concerning this young man not letting his issues gaining control over him That does it, you took my beer away, lock me up.You Judge, just shot me through my heart. No beer,.
The judges argument against using pot to treat PTSD reminds me of the argument against Prozac back in the 90s. "Prozac doesn't make you happy, it just makes you think you are happy." That always sounded like Mission Accomplished to me.
Exactly. She's spent years of having that war on drugs propaganda thrown at her, as well as probably seeing the many ways people have of making stupid decisions. Also, I'm curious what she thinks people with chronic pain conditions such as RA and fibromyalgia should do. There's nothing that they can do for those conditions other than treat the pain. I guess she'd rather they take opiates instead.
@@thetickedoffpianoplayer4193 Completely agree. I have PTSD, and using CBD and THC in specific doses helps me deal with the symptoms without having to take things like Xanax for the intense panic attacks or sleeping meds because my night terrors make it impossible to sleep peacefully sometimes. "Miracle Weed"? Oh, I can see it now ... Someone's pulled over, the officer finds Miracle Weed, and the driver says, "Oh, my spouse asked me to pick up some Miracle Whip."
It is not a cure, it handles symptoms. No doctor pretends otherwise. Does she really believe that pain relievers and anesthetics are somehow medically unsound simply because they are not cures? There are a lot of different sources for chronic pain, so yes, it can apply to multiple conditions. There is no completely safe treatment of anything, but there aren't cures for everything either and as far as mitigation for the kind of conditions it is prescribed for, it is far safer than alternatives such as opioids. She is a judge, not a doctor. Forget any questions of practicing Law from the bench, she should not be attempting to practice Medicine from the bench.
Though she is dead wrong on weed, it can indeed be used to treat mental health to a degree, it can help cope with it. She needs to read the science on it.
