Self Sabotage After My Layoff in my 50s | What I Did to Recover | What am I Doing to Reinvent Myself

  • After my layoff in April 2024, I was so down that I started to self sabotage my thoughts and actions. I developed habits where I continued negative self thoughts, created excuses and fell further into the trap. I had to snap out of it and do something to help myself. Here's how I identified what I was doing and what I did to get out of it.

I think the self-sabotage can happen even before being let go, especially if you're working for a company or in a position that causes deep unhappiness, but you feel like you're stuck, that no one will want you because you're older, or whatever negative thoughts we tell ourselves. It happened to me, but eventually things happened that forced the change upon me. I'm starting over (after 40 years) with a new company and I'm looking forward to whatever this new challenge will bring. I just have to keep telling myself I can do this, and not let negative thoughts color my new situation!

I got laid off and also retired at 52 and honestly, I wish I’d done it sooner. The 9-to-5 grind always steals your freedom for a paycheck that barely scratches the surface. My advice? If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s, start saving for FIRE now (Financial Independence, Retire Early.) And if you’re in your 50s, invest smartly and break free from relying on your job. Market trends, like the Trump Effect, have made millions for many, including me. Stay focused, stay consistent, and remember financial freedom is within reach if you make it a priority.

Exactly My point! The 9 to 5 grind is just not worth it the stress and low payoff. What specific steps did you take to break free?

Working with Lorrie Greta Hillard , a financial advisor, was a game changer. She helped me refine my savings strategy, including retirement planning, and provided expert guidance on investments and budgeting to maximize my savings.

Perfect, wonderful advice! Steals your freedom is a great way to describe it. You have the paycheck but no free time or energy to have a life. We lived to work not work to live.

I worked 20 years in real estate, successfully, to switching gears a few years ago when I felt like I was no longer enjoying it, burned out. Now, I work in the corporate world (my choice). Pros and cons to both. I love my coworkers and the management. My job is fun! However, I was 50 years old when I swirched careers. I also currently work on side projects that I love too. I heard this once. "Don't await it. Create it." So true. People have asked, "Will I stay? Or work 100% for myself again? I don't know. Right now, I am happy, but I did have more free time before. I also made all my own decisions. I admire your strength, your vulnerability, and your ambition. Love your new channel! We do have a lot to offer at 50 and beyond!

Thank you so much, Lisa! Your story means a lot to me. It's encouraging to know that you love your job and co-workers. The people are the best part of working, IMO. "Don't Await It, Create It" is the best. There are so many people out on YT reading comments and that says a lot to people who are afraid to take the bull by the horns and do it!

Such a motivating story! Can’t wait to read your recommended books. I love the “show up,” and “quit giving grace,” very much a reminder to give ourselves the same kick in the booty we would others!
Need to journal the same exercise re what really want 🎉

Everything you said is ME! Literally. I feel like I've been living a 'fake' career just to earn the money.I would love to connect with you and get some insight on how I can be honest with myself and what's next. Thank you for speaking the words, I needed this today. I'm so exhausted and over corporate.

i'm retired now... BUT when i was still working, i always tried to compartmentalized my life... self, family, social, and professional...sometimes they intermingle but as a rule it's better to keep things separate and manageable... the problem was finding the time to obtain more professional knowledge and skills while ensuring i was there for my family and their needs... the benefit was that my professional life did not interfere in my self worth nor my duties as a family man and friend... it helped keep my balanced ... one other issue is never define your career by the job/position you currently have... a career is a lifetime and a job is just part of that career.... this lady seems to intermingle her whole life in one big event... don't do that, .as any disruption like a layoff can make you question your self worth and the other parts of your life... and remember this always always have a side hustle / gig (it's just fun )

You are lucky to have kept things balanced! You sound just like my husband. He tells me the same thing all the time. :-) I had separation, it's just hard to tell a life story in a short video. I have a great side hustle. I started selling on eBay and Poshmark in 2019 as a hobby. You are so right. I'm so glad I had that established. I'm probably combining some of my world's. My youngest is almost 20 and is thinking about getting her own apartment. I'm trading an open nest for great grandkids.

@@laramorrow68 just remember you are more than your parts... i'll tell you a little bit bout myself... i had a really great career path in front of me in my mid 30s... then one day, i was stuck in traffic while going to work and realized that i could've jogged to work faster than driving... i decided to end the madness and find a better balance... a huge drop in "career status" and income BUT looking back after 30 years have passed...it was the best thing i ever committed to... sometimes, you can find much more happiness if you step back into a career step which provides you with more balance ... a job is not the total you and self help books are just telling you what you already know... EDIT (write your own book)

Great video! I'm pretty sure I could teach a Masterclass on how to self sabbotage. 😣 I just ordered the book. Looking forward to moving past this phase. I did start my own business 4 years ago. It has not been successful, largely because of self sabbotage. I've spent the last 4+ months job searching and that has not been successful either. I know self employment is the only way forward for me at this age. I just need to figure out how to grow my business to where it will support me.

First, stop praising your former company. They dumped you like an old coffee filter. The only good thing about them is they gave you a far longer notice than most. Also, part of your self-sabotage was babysitting your grandson for six months. As shocking as it is, most people who are homeless have families who hate having to ignore their mom sleeping behind a Walmart every night, but they explain it away to keep their own lives on track. You had a heads-up for months that your job was going away. Most people find out at 4pm to clean out their desks. You should have been hitting the bricks the MOMENT you had that heads up. You should not have walked out of that last job without working incredibly hard to have another. Make no mistake, your husband could lose his job, his health or his life at any moment. PREPARE for the worst RIGHT NOW or decide what sidewalk grate you may have to sleep on top of. Take any job you can now and search for better. Save as much as you can now with an eye on it may be this savings that keeps you from sleeping in your car. No more Mexican vacations. You were well-off two incomes ago. Now you are pretending on one income. DO NOT LET YOUR HOUSE GO INTO FORECLOSURE. Make plans to sell it waaaay before you are forced to. That equity may be your only lifeline SOONER THAN YOU THINK. People our age are experiencing homelessness at an increasingly higher rate, and many of those people had corporate jobs, lived in beautiful homes, and had a great history of employment. Good luck and God Bless.
