You forgot to mention how the Midday Form Lycanroc and Midnight Form Lycanroc can still be both caught in the wild in all the Gen 7 games in Vast Poni Canyon despite the fact that Rockruff can only evolve into one of them depending on the version. So in that sense they aren’t version exclusive but what form Rockruff evolves into is version exclusive.
I totally should have mentioned the fact that you can catch either of the forms. I think I at least specifically mentioned evolutions for that bit, but there’s really no harm in being over informative.
I remember getting SoulSilver as my first game and loving it so much that I asked my parents to get me HeartGold for Christmas and I was sooo disappointed that it was essentially the same game. Looking back, I’m very glad I have both versions ! I’ve been playing my HeartGold copy recently and it’s been tons of fun to relive my first playthrough now that I’m an adult. The small differences make it feel like a new experience that gives me access to different Pokémon for my team. :3
Despite the childhood disappointment, definitely not a bad problem to have! I had the opposite problem where my parents were confused as to why I wanted basically the same game twice lmao
Abolish dual game releases, abolish timed real-life mythicals
Legends arceus being a single game that included the ability to get all of the sinnoh mythicals without time restrictions gave such a slice of how great things could be and I really hope it becomes more and more common for the series as time progresses!
I like two versions because it encourages me to actually trade with my friends

With the advent of online trading, there's really no reason to have multiple versions released at the same time anymore, except to sell more copies because some people will buy both.

I thought you would mention the gen 1 game corner prize differences. Porygon is WAY cheaper in Blue.
I honestly forgot about it and none of the pages I went to for the research brought it up but now I’m kinda annoyed with myself for not remembering because it really is such a good weird example of the differences
Great video! That being said, I wish you HAD gone into more detail regarding Legends Arceus because, while it is a single game, it does force you to make a choice partway through the adventure the basically changed your campaign into a Pearl version or a Diamond version and you can’t change the decision once you make it. The differences are just a few cutscenes, Pokemon, dialogue, and maybe items, but it still feels like you’re choosing your version in-game which is unique for the series and IMO a more consumer-friendly option. You could also link that back to Pokemon Pinball and how it-too had two versions within one game but you got to pick which one you played. Again, great video as per usual and I love your content. Just wanted to mention this stuff as it was on my mind while watching. ✌️

Looking back, there could be an argument for the points about arceus, as I feel with that, combine with the fact that we know that brilliant diamond and shining pearl just have a flag to determine which version it is, there’s a way we could keep the two versions concept alive while only having one release by just having you select which version you want to play upon starting a new save, which could be a nice topic to touch on for this video. Pokémon pinball genuinely just escapes my mind most of the time due to me not having played it in well over a decade at this point
I forgot about this! I think if they were to get rid of dual versions, I'd want split storylines still, if feasible. It encourages replaying the games while being more consumer-friendly for those who want the full experience. You can keep trade-exclusives/multiplayer-exclusive stuff for the more traditional releases like Scarlet and Violet, but I do appreciate that the Legends sub series lets you fully enjoy the game without needing to trade.
If you want to see some REALLY WEIRD version differences, look at the encounter tables for Jagged Pass in Ruby and Sapphire, or Ambrette Town in X and Y. They've got the exact same Pokemon in both versions, but are inexplicably at lower levels in one version than the other.
This reminds of FireRed and LeafGreen where both Nidoran genders are available in both games, with Nidoran Male available on Route 3 at a 14% encounter and Nidoran female is available at 1% in FireRed, and in LeafGreen they swap encounter rates with Female being the 14% rate and Male being the 1% rate. Not technically version exclusives but damn near close enough

Dang, i haven’t played the kalos games in a very long time, so unfortunately the finer details of the story like that have completely been lost in my memory.
What about Team Magma in Ruby/Omega Ruby and Team Aqua in Sapphire/Alpha Sapphire?
I’m absolutely in disbelief that I forgot something as massive as that.
Maybe with just how vocal it is, or my many hours in emerald, it just fell to the wayside, but still am kinda embarrassed I forgot this.

I wholeheartedly agree with your take at the end. The dual releases are archaic and should be retired, but a lot of people buy two versions of the same game so there's 0 financial incentive to not continue releasing them...
That’s 100% the reason they keep the dual release. Why sell 1 game for 12 million when you can sell the same game with a slightly different coat of paint and say they sell 24 million?
But that’s why I prefer the 3rd release vs DLC. Now the DLC costs half the game, and if you want it for both games, that’s the same as buying a 3rd game anyway…
I know that I am part of the problem, as I buy the double pack at launch for all the switch games that have had it, but it’d be so nice if they’d release us from the torment

One weird thing about the game exclusive evolutions introduced in Gen 7. While Rockruff's evolution was changed to make what form you get based off of what time the game is at, Cosmoem's evolution wasn't changed. What it evolves into is still locked to what game it's evolved in. When referring to the games like Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Violet, etc., Cosmoem will only evolve into Solgaleo in the first games, and Lunala in the second games.
I’m always still mad I found out later my favorite Pokémon, hydreigon, was a scarlet exclusive but at least I got its violet paradox!
I’ll never forget choosing Y version because I liked yveltal more, just to learn I preferred almost all of the other X exclusives lmao
Always annoyed me mankey was a Red exclusive. I wanted to get one in Blue so bad as a kid and did not know why I couldn’t find it.
Having squirtle as my favourite Pokémon leading to an affinity towards blue version, as well as a fan of Mankey, I am familiar with this annoyance

Pokémon in the Celedon Game Corner cost different prices in Red and Blue if they appear in both.
In Red, Porygon costs 9999 coins, whereas in Blue, it's 6500, for example.
I understand there being multiple versions in order to justify the games' players being the best advertisements. I hear that their original plan was to have 256 different "versions" on a single cartridge by doing some algorithm on your Trainer ID. But ultimately decided on two clearly-delineated versions so that kids could actually *tell* their friends to get the other version rather than hoping for RNG to be different enough to trade.
The thing is, there are way better ways to do mutually-exclusive Pokémon - some of which they were already doing in Gen 1, with the starter and fossil choices!
My ideal, is like, make a single game, and start it with a questionnaire that could be described in-universe as, say, a history quiz. But there's no wrong answers - it just affects your encounter tables! If you decide that the region's volcano's most recent eruption was 100 years ago, that area of the map might be filled with a lot of Fire types. But your friend, who said instead that it erupted most recently 1000 years ago, for them that area is filled with Ground types.
A weird thing I literally only learned was version exclusive this week was Lusamine's motivation in USUM. In Ultra Sun, she just wants to defeat Necrozma. In Ultra Moon, she wants to capture it.
How strange.
I feel like I'm nuts, because I find scarlet to be the afterthought. Like yeah, I agree that the past paradox designs are more creative, but that's about it. The plot makes a lot more sense in Violet imo lmfao. Plus miraidon better

There's literally no reason to trade between two games anymore. Gens 1 through 5 if played on emulators, allow you to get all pokemon, especially with Gen 3. Times have changed but the game mechanics did not. It was also proven when a hacker gained access to the source code of Brillant Diamond and Shinning Pearl, that you can get all the Sinnoh pokemon by changing the version exclusive flag to 1. All by changing that one value, they were able to obtain pokemon that can also be gotten in Brilliant Diamond since they were using Shinning Pearl, and vice versa. The two game thing has been a scam the whole time!
The stupid thing about XY is that if a Mega Pokemon is a version exclusive, its Mega Stone will only be found in the opposite version. What the hell, GameFreak?
6:57 There's that oval-headed render again. Hate that guy. If i had the mental bandwith to run a gimmick account it would be to hate on oval-headed pikachu renders specifically. God im glad Gamefreak finally retired that thing, unfortunate that it still crops up in community made videos such as this. I get why, it was *the* render style for a while, bit it always sucked.
This specific render isnt as bad as *the* oval-headed render, but i still dont care for it.
While it is totally still oval headed, I used that render as I believe it should be art specifically for the let’s go games and the partner pikachu and eevee are kinda like different forms, so just a situation of trying to be as correct as possible
@@Turtle-Soup That's a good reason to be using it. I'm not upset at you for using it to be clear, I'm upset that it's the logical thing to do. Upset it was pushed as much as it was. Terrible artistic change and yet it was everywhere, so it makes sense to use it for scholarly reasons, and *that* bothers me, not the fact it's used for scholarly reasons to begin with

@@PhoenicopterusR his head is misshapen. No head is an oval like that unless you're a peanuts character. It doesn't look like a mouse, it doesn't look like previous renders of Pikachu, it just looks like extremely bad stylization when no other pokémon is styled like that. Looks horrible

You can catch both Ho-Oh and Lugia in either game, it's only _when_ you get to catch them that differs between versions (which due to different levels, also means the one not on the box of your game won't have its signature move).

I plan too, I promise! I bought all the ones on the wiiu virtual console so I could even record my playthroughs if I want to and so I’ve just kinda been waiting for a good time where I can schedule in playing them and whatever I may do with any footage I get!

Also you saying you want more games like how Unova had big differences between them... I disagree... I already stress about just picking what exclusive mons I want I don't wanna be like "welp if I pick one I miss on an entire set of other stuff" I am fine with just some trading, helps not feel like they are *actually* trying to get people to buy both versions lol

We need to yell pokemon to get rid of two versions of the SAME GAME. I don't get how ppl been cool with that. They can work it out. It would not take away from pokemon. They can put the two name scheme on the one box. Make the game come with a play through that let's us feel the two titles. With two games the only difference is the few pokemon that could easily got on one game.
scarlet and violet show the real problem with having two versions where all of the violet paradox pokemon except valiant are way more lame than the scarlet paradox pokemon
I very much agree. The past paradoxes have these really nice twists on classic designs while the future are all just Pokémon but robot
They showed they’re was something interesting in to with valiant, but that was all they did. It wouldn’t be as bad if we at least got the combined legendary trio paradoxes shown in the books in the games, but we really just got the swords of justice but robots.
Not really, that's more of an issue with the fandom jumping the gun and treating certain things (like being robots) as problems when they aren't. The groups themselves are pretty even on most aspects.
