So James Jamerson used sunburst P-Basses back in the 60's and Sean is using essentially the same thing all these decades later... The moral of the story is if it sounds great, don't mess with success! Great rig, Funk Brothers approved! Love it!
It's cool having the volume marked on the amp by tape, as in the studio you can have it at the best sounding volume and it doesn't matter how loud it is.
Hey brotha. I mean this is all good and all but most of the time we get to see all this great gear, but then don't get to hear it. We bass players WANNA HEAR IT ALL!!!! :) were professional listeners are we not? ;)
Hi +Doug Ryniker Definitely! We will have to do another one with Sean on Bass recording very soon!! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@@lavadoraautomatica1 He's on a ton of recordings but every time he's on youtube all he does is talk. As far as I've been able to find there's only one video of him actually just playing.
I’m a guitarist playing bass and kind of want to expand my bass rig. Looks like I need a p bass, some kind of semi hollow, and the flip top 15. At least based off all these bass rig videos of yours that I’ve been watching lol. Pretty awesome though! I’m having way more fun than I thought I would playing bass
Great videos Warren! I have noticed that camera mic picks up the heavy breathing of the camera person annoyingly well on quite a few of your videos. I try to ignore it, but the sound engineer in me has trouble 'blocking it out'. The camera work is fine however. LOL Keep up the great work!
Hi +christodav Haha I will talk to the camera man about his heavy breathing! Maybe he had a cold? We did this a little gorilla style! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@@Producelikeapro Gorillas are highly intelligent, but I'm not sure they'd be able to operate a video camera. Maybe worth a try though. Perhaps you meant Guerrilla?
Hi Warren, and thanks for your channel! I've enjoyed each of your bass player's videos, so please: Keep it on! :-) Just one question: Could you tell me the name/model of Sean's Looper? Thanks in advance!
Do you know if Sean is still using the Evil Twin? There've been a small handful of other entries into the bass-friendly DI category, and I'm wondering if he's still sticking with the industry standard.
I did sessions for years with just a precision and whatever amp was in the studio or straight to the desk ,but I was never happy with my bass sound ,always buried somewhere in the mix ,I recorded a lot a polydor in Oxford street with engineer Carlos ohms ,different days ,but I prefer the modern effects for bass we've never had it so good
Hi reffoelcnu alouncelal, great comment! I agree, the kind of equipment that is available today is amazing! When I started only those with huge cheque books could afford great sounding gear! Wishing you a Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That's a Neumann Fet U47 keith ruddell I also use a lot of different large diaphragm mics, Lewitt, AKG or Audio Technica will work great! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren Huart
Hi Warren, I knew all the great session bass player (not the virtuoso kind of) of the past set their string action fairly high, to get more attack, more sustain and less fret buzz. I seem your wonderful guests in all your bass player interviews set their action pretty low and don't care about sustain or fret buzz. What's your opinion as producer and sound engineer? Much appreciated.
Unless the strings are constantly touching a higher fret that the fretted note, I really don’t see how a low action could affect sustain. It just doesn’t make sense to me🤷🏻♂️
People say you should always use the shortest possible cable for maximum fidelity. Personally, I think it's overstated. Musicians get really obsessive compulsive about minor differences no one can possibly hear.
Master Hurley is the epitome of smooth. The cat is simply tres cool and his advice or two cents on bass players role or duty in a song is spot on.
As an audio engineer by I am absolutely FASCINATED by the phylosophys applied chasing bass tones as an elite session player.
Love seeing sessions guy's rig's....they are super clean
Love when a 😎 Bass player uses a plectrum, flats and foam an a 4 string passive bass to obtain a specific sound. Proper. Nice vid. Thank you. 😊😊😊
Thanks ever so much!!
Hi Warren, I'm a bassist myself. I use a 1977 Fender Jazz. Your videos have given me a lot of help. Thanks from Ireland.Regards, Jerry.
Thanks very much jazzbass1979! I am so happy to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
when he banged that vintage bass against the other one my heart dropped.
A P bass with a B15 is the perfect bass setup for me. 50 years later and it still hasn't been improved upon.
It has.

Thanks for the info and sweet setup Sean!!
Thanks Johnny Beane I really appreciate it!
You will always be the best.🙂

Recording Engineers have been doing that for decades before software recording was even a concept. 🙂

I mean well Sean is a very well known studio player so you probably already heard all this stuff on the multiple records that he’s been a part of.

andtothewestamerica but that’s most studio players I know. They never play anything crazy but they always get called for sessions.
@@lavadoraautomatica1 I don't mean to call him out except that I love to hear him play.
Same bass here! 5 string version, updated with Nordstrand pickups and Schaller bridge.
All the best!
0:55 good to know that even pro session players bang their instruments on stuff too haha.
Knocking the bass at 0:54 😱
They’re his basses! Haha so I’m sure he can do what he wants haha

@2:54 does anyone know what mic they're using for the cab?
I suffered a lot with the EBS bc too gritty, but I intentionally set the tone much similar like Sean. 😊
I would love to know what pedals he is using on his board

Thanks for this! Which flat wounds on the Precision?
He uses Labella 760FL.
how does its sound?????

nice boots. what brand?
Where's the sound sample ?
Another video with Sean Hurley coming soon!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Sean's a killer bass player... BUT, I have to ask....... Where can I get that rug!! :)
Haha indeed! Rugtastic!!
It really ties the room together... 😎

how does he put every pedal in loop?

Anyone know exactly what year and model B-15 this is?
If anyone's wondering (as I was), looks like he's using a Voodoo Lab pedal switcher
Does he really needs the DI box running short cables??? I am new in DI boxes, I am just wondering ;)
Somebody can answer???
People say you should always use the shortest possible cable for maximum fidelity. Personally, I think it's overstated. Musicians get really obsessive compulsive about minor differences no one can possibly hear.
His basses seem set up with a pretty high action, or is it my failing eyesight?
What cable is for the bass guitar?
Found it, Asterope cables
I didn’t understand any of that! Who knew playing bass was so complicated 🤪
True, less talking more playing.
If you are going to show a Bass set up, be a good idea to actually hear that Bass !!! otherwise what is the point really !!
The irony of a video about production tips with horrific audio
You don’t need to compress me.....as I go thru a tube amp (compression), a tube pre (compression), a tube dirt pedal (compression).
And I take a straight DI off his Bass (as every Engineer who knows what he's doing in the world would do), which doesn't need compression.
