Modern Ithaca is generally identified with Homer's Ithaca, the home of #Odysseus, whose delayed return to the island is the plot of the classical Greek tale the #Odyssey. Ithaca symbolizes the return to the haven, the discovery and the fulfillment.

Vathy, the capital of the island, fans out like an amphitheater. Vathy is an #attractive #settlement with a pronounced #Venetian influence, pretty houses with tiled roofs, imposing #mansions and #picturesque stone-paved alleys. It has, since 1978, been classified by law as a ‘traditional’ settlement. The approach to Vathy by sea is truly an experience. The narrow neck of the #harbour conceals the view of the gulf that suddenly reveals its true #beauty. At the town square of Vathy, one is welcomed by the statue with two poses of #Odysseus, #King of Ithaca and the bust of Homer.
#Symbolic of the promised land for which everyone is searching, #magical Ithaca fills you with inspiration on a journey through rich history, majestic scenery and beautiful beaches.
“As you set out for Ithaca, hope the voyage is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery,” wrote the great #Greek #poet Constantinos #Cavafy.

Sarakiniko beach.

The gulf of Sarakiniko is on the road to Filiatro, about 4kms from Vathy. It has two beaches that are joined by a short foot-path. The blue waters of the sea bewitch the visitor
Filiatro beach: Pebbles, umbrellas/sunbeds, canteen.
Activities: #swimming, #snorkeling
Among the popular beaches, shaded by olive trees, and ten minutes by car from Vathy. The gulf is protected from winds, has #turquoise waters, and offers the visitor relaxation, tranquillity and enjoyment. There are two neighbouring beaches that can be discovered by swimming. A smaller one is on the right of the main beach, and a larger one on the left. A canteen functions during July and #August
Gidaki paradise beach: Pebbles, umbrellas/sunbeds, canteen, access by path or by sea.
Activities: swimming, snorkeling
Many consider this to be the most beautiful beach of Ithaca and one of the most beautiful in Greece. The striking blue-green waters, the snow-white pebbles and the untouched, wild, natural landscape, impress every visitor. Small boats depart for it from Vathy on a regular basis. It can also be reached by walking along the footpath that begins at Skinos.

Thanks for sharing! I’m from Vathi. My father sold home overlooking harbour & lazareto just when the Euro came in just to help his sister who’s daughter got into gambling debt in Australia! I feel very teary watching this! There is no way in the world i’d be living in Aust now if i still had it. Still pretty much the same as way back & good to see! To all who have homes there enjoy & all the best. 🚤🛟🏖️
