When I was at rank 2, Inky sometimes isn't visible on the map but still work the same by rank 2 rules, and the (...) wasn't visible either. So I actively have to look for Inky once each time. Though for the rest it works exactly the same like this guide. Thanks for this🎉

from what i understood so far, its the exclamation point that is what to pay attention to. if the dialogue have the "!" in the end of the sentence, its food. if its not, then pet. for rank 2.
There was a problem with the translation, they fixed it adding the "pur pur" as it was intended in Chinese... There are yet two similar translations, but the one asking for food have "maybe" after "meow", the other don't. If you don't know what to say, it's always better to pick "feed", because it never lower the rank, unlike "play" and "pet" options.
